Info on Model 36
Curious about approximate age of my Mod 36 and if it’s safe for +P loads
serial number is AAZ4776
Unsure why the photos are upside down. They are not that way on my phone.

Searching for history of a 360 j
Recently purchased a used S&W 360 J. Serial # CYP9163. Curious about the history you can find for it. If it’s only the ship date, that’s fine.
Thanks.

Do you have the original box with paper end label? Fired cartridge envelope? If so, the production date is included on the envelope and on the box end label. It will be a 6 digit code MMDDYY (Month/Day/Year)

I finally bought a S&W 41, no UAF 6124, guess it’s a fairly recent production?

I checked my Model 63. It is my first S&W. The Model No. on yoke is: 63-5 and the s/n is: czk6546. this matches the s/n on bottom of grip.
Two questions:
1. What does the "dash number" mean?
2. What was ship date?
If ya'll could help me out, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

The - (dash) number refers to a production and engineering change of the firearm. The Model 63's are not in my wheelhouse so I can't tell you what it represents. I believe the CZK serial# prefix dates to about 2004.

I'm guessing no one has responded because the information doesn't make sense. A revolver with a BCE serial# prefix dates to 1988. The 500 wasn't produced until 2003. Something isn't right.

Thank you very much for your response!
That is very strange indeed, because to me all looks genuine (see attachment). I have checked the number on the bottom of the grip, it corresponds with the one from the photo. There are additional markings on the lower end of the grip: on the lefthand side of the grip "C7" which looks stamped, and on the righthand side of the grip an 8-digit number which looks manually stippled and the first three digits correspond with the number on the crane visible in the attached image ...
Who might be able to help me? qa@smith-wesson.com did not react to my inquiry.

I would first pose my question in the Forum underneath this area in the normal threads area. If you don't receive a response then it's up to you to do the work.
The only real way to determine its shipping date is via a S&W Historical Society letter of Authenticity. It's not free, costs $100 U.S. Here's the link if you decide to do it. If me, I would scan the auctions from the various auction sites and look for a similarly serialized example and see if I could gleen any information from the auction descriptions and/or use my google-foo looking at the hundreds of pictures that are posted on line to see if I can find a website that would explain the serial numbering on these. It would appear that it's going to take either money or amatuer detective work to find out.

I was unaware of the "Historical Society letter of Authenticity" option, thanks for pointing out.
Scanning the auctions is a brilliant idea, I will consider this. Using google I already found some results pointing towards being a very early one ~2003.
If I find more specific results I will post them here for future reference.
Best regards.

The serial# dates to 1991.
I would suggest checking completed listings on the auction sites to get a handle on value.

S&W 617
I have a Model 617 10-shot 22LR that I would be very appreciative if anyone might be able to help me identify the ship date for, as well as possible insight into a related question that I have. The SN is CTF6808. Additionally, it is marked as a 617-6 underneath the SN on the frame and marked "108" on the crane. Does this mean that it was originally a 6-shot that has been converted into a 10-shot by a previous owner? Thanks for taking the time to read my post and I would be thankful if anyone had any insight!
