David R,
Hello,
Early J frame serial# information is a little lacking in our reference material. According to the Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition:

1962 295000
1969 786544

By looking at the above dates compared to your serial#, I would guess at about 1968, bearing in mind that S&W didn't ship guns in numerical order.
Hope this helps.

Robert

Default Ship date for 629-1

I just purchased a beautiful 629-1 6". Not only did it come with the original box and papers but also the box that the box was shipped in. The mailing label shows it came from Camfour Inc in Westfield, Mass. Wasn't that a dist. similar to Talo or Lew Horton? I have the SCSW but for the life of me, I can't figure out the ship date. The serial # is ACT9xxx. It shows a product code of 103606. I found that in the catalog but gives the gun a 9 year span. One last thing, the trigger is smooth, not serrated. Is that normal for a gun made in this time range? Any help would be much appreciated.
Mark

Hello Mark,
I read the shipping date as sometime in the spring/summer of 1983. The Standard Catalog shows:
Jan 1983 ABL4000
Oct 1983 ADE6700
Sometimes you have to read into the serial# tables. This just my .2 cents as the only true answer is with a historical letter. The product code info starts in 1984, so when you compare the two, it's pretty close. The product code on your box label shows:
-6" barrel
-Stainless
-Target Stocks
-Combat Trigger (which is smooth)
-Target Hammer
-Red Ramp
-White Outline
Sounds to me like a very nice revolver. Hope this info helps

Robert

Thanks Robert,
And it is a gorgeous gun. I usually give used guns I buy a spit shine but this one looks brand new. I'll break open the Big Book and see if I find those numbers. Thanks for your help.

I just came into possession of a S&W model 10-8. Serial number is AYV6431. I would really appreciate if someone could help me identify the year it was manufactured. Thanks!

ednblue,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum!
A revolver with a serial# prefix of CNY would date to approx 2004. The only true source of shipping information is via a historical letter from Roy Jinks, the S&W Historian.

atlantaguy,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum!
A revolver with a serial# prefix of AYV dates to approx 1987. I carried a Model 10-7 for many years and never felt under gunned. The Model 10's and variants have been S&W's bread and butter guns for over 100 years.

Hello Steve,
It must be uncomfortable to shoot that without stocks, especially with full house 357 ammunition
AHJ dates to about 1985.

Looked at a model 14-2 target model with a 6" barrel. Could anyone give me an idea of the manufacture date and what it could be worth? I would guess the condition to be good - very good with the fact that it doesn't have the original grips. Serial number is K754326. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum
Your Model 14-2 dates to about 1967. Value depends on overall condition and without pic's everything is a guess. The non original stocks will hurt the value somewhat, but a value of around $500 without pic's is my guesstimate. I can tell you that the Model 14 is a superb shooter, very smooth and accurate and loves light wadcutter ammunition. I've put several thousand rounds through mine (pictured) and it's previous owners have done the same.

824tsv thank you for your help. I believe I can get the gun for under $350. It needs a little bit of a rub down and a polish here and there. I see I can get grips for it for around $30. The trigger was very smooth and the timing and lockup were great. I believe I may have my next revolver. Also good to here it shoots best with WC rounds as that is what I mostly reload. Thanks again for your response.

Post S&W 686 Question

I have a S&W 686 and I would like to ask a question not so much about the serial number but what do all the other marks mean. I have 5 series of stamps on the left side under the grip and 3 on the right side also these are definitive stamps no misstamps or double stamps. Also it has a 8 3/8"barrel if I need to can post numbers or letters Thanks for any help?

Default Mod 28-2

Trying to find out if the finish on a Mod. 28 Highway Patrol 357 is original. Ser. # N 22591x. It is in nickel now. Stamped with a K in a square on the handle frame under grips. The finish is in terrible condition.

Thanks, WestLV

Rpssandy,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
The stampings you see are assembly numbers, shop and inspector stamps. These markings mean nothing to us once the firearm leaves the factory. Hope that helps.

The Standard Catalog indicates:
1962 295000
1969 786544

My guess would be sometime in 1963-64

Please note that this list is a general guide and not meant to be exact. There is some dispute regarding the dates on some serial numbers and your gun may actually be a year off from what is listed. The precise shipping date as "lettered" can be several years off depending on model. For the exact date on your gun request the letter from S&W Historian Roy Jinks.

*Note that a number of N frames with serials in the S138000-S140000 range (and the range may be wider either way) are seen that were shipped much later than the serial would suggest should be the case. In one known example a gun with serial S136431 was not shipped until June of 1958. It's possible that a large block of serial numbers that appear to be from 1954-55 were not actually used until 1957-58. It at least one case a gun has a 5-screw serial and was built as a 4-screw gun.

Your Model 25-2 revolver with a serial# of N405xxx dates to approx 1977 according to the Standard Catalog of S&W. The other numbers and letters you see are assembly numbers and inspectors markings that mean nothing to us once the firearm leaves the factory. The serial# is the only number that means anything at this point. The presentation case that you received with the revolver was provided by S&W for these N frame revolvers as an option, but I'm unsure if S&W actually made them. My 2 presentation cases for my Model 29's have a blue "flock" lining that is standard for your revolvers time frame. Hope this information helps.
BTW Welcome to the Forum..

ProgressiveTruth,
According to the Standard Catalog the 640-1 began production in 1996 and the -2 production and engineering change occurred in 1997. Based on that I would say your's is from 1996.

Revolvers are often stamped or etched with many numbers, but only one set is your serial number. For modern Smith and Wesson revolvers, the serial number is located on the butt of the revolver. Often the grip will cover the number. The serial number can also be found on the frame behind the yoke for some models. For most post-1980 revolvers the serial number will be in an ABC1234 format.

EDIT: As murphydog points out, the date that can be looked up is the ship date, not the date the gun was manufactured.

Take this 686 for example:

It has Ahrends Retro Combat Finger Groove grips that cover the serial number:

If we remove the grips, we can see the serial number (AFE8794):

On this gun, if we look behind the yoke on the frame, we can also see the serial number (AFE8794) and the model number (MOD 686):

Here is a Model 66-2:

The Ahrends Boot Grips make seeing the serial number (BAF7171) easy:

However, if we look behind the yoke, this gun only lists the model number (MOD 66-2):

Some grip makers (like Pachmayr) design their grips so the serial number may be seen. Pachmayr Grippers on a 617:

Pachmayr Compacs on a 627-5 UDR:

Older guns (including some made in the early 1980s) will have a different style of serial number. Here is a 18-4 with the older-style serial number:

The grips block access to the serial number:

Taking the grips off we can see the older-style serial number (21K6944):

The serial number (21K6944) and model number (MOD. 18-4) are also on the frame behind the yoke:

Things that are NOT your serial number:
(The side of the butt behind the grips)

(Numbers on the yoke)

If you provide us with your serial number, those of us with a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson can look up the approximate date your revolver was shipped from Smith and Wesson. For those who have the 3rd edition, serial numbers for most post-1980 revolvers are located on page 400.
I have a model 41 with the number A615042. Can anyone date thsi gun?

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
The Model 41 is my main collecting interest for all of the S&W models. Your's dates to about 1979-80. Excellent pistols and one that will give you many years of service. If possible, please post a pic and tell us what barrel is on it.

TRIPP,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum
Your revolver probably dates to about 2004. The serial# tables in the resource material we use end in that year, and although your revolvers serial# prefix doesn't show up specifically in the tables, 2004 would be my best guess.

Hello. I'm new to forums altogether. In fact, this is my first post and I have no idea if I'm even posting this properly.... Sorry in advance.

I just got a S&W and need to find out the approximate ship date. If you have any other information on the this firearm, that would be great too. It has a smooth cylinder and a 3" barrel.

Any help is much appreciated.

Serial #CFZ5646
Model 629-6
I think it's an N frame?

Thanks again.
