wpsharpshooter,
As per the Standard Catalog, your 586-2 shipped in 1988. Hope this info helps.

plvickers,
I'm guessing on this one. The Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition has the shipping dates for .38 Special M&P Postwar and models 10, 11, 12, 45 and Aircrewman.
1945-1948 S811338-S999999
With that info and dates in mind, your revolver with S9655XX looks like it shipped sometime in 1948. A historical letter is the best bet to nail a shipping date for your revolver. Hope this info helps.

Road Warrior,
As per the Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition it looks like your Model 36 or pre-Model 36 at that time (S&W gave them model number designations after 1957) shipped sometime in 1955. Hope this info helps.

Thank you!
This might be a newb question, but is it possible for a gun to ship in 2004 and be sold as "factory new" in 2013?
Thanks again...

acoban,
That's not out of the realm of possibilities for a 10 year old gun to be hidden away unfired. We see it here on these forums all the time. A factory new revolver will show 3 burn rings on the end of the cylinder. S&W test fires every other charge hole in a revolver, and there should be only a trace of a turn line on the cylinder. If you see anything else, it's been pre-loved by someone.

Hello,
Welcome to the Forum.
You definately have a Model 66 there. The main difference between the two revolvers is that a Model 686 has a full barrel underlug, where your's has the ejector rod shroud. Just off the cuff I'm speculating that your revolver is from the 1985-1988 era, but I'll be able to advise you the shipping year when I get home this afternoon and check my Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition.

Hi Y'all;
Another newbie here. I've just today received my first S&W K22, 6", 6 shot, serial AJD 3080, and would appreciate any info, shipping date, etc., until I can get hold of a Standard Catalog. Many thanks.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
Congratulations on buying a fine .22 revolver that will give you years of accurate shooting. Your serial# falls into a grey area in the Standard Catalog's serial# tables. My best guess would be sometime in 1985 for a shipping year. The best source for the correct shipping info would be a factory letter from the S&W Historical Dept. Best of luck with your new revolver and if you get a chance please post some pic's.

Just picked up my first S&W today - Model 29 (29-3). I would appreciate it if someone could look up the following SN for me: AUC43XX. I am going to order the Smith and Wesson Bible but I am like a kid with a new toy. I cannot wait!
Your assistance is most appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe

629-3
I picked this up at a crossroads show from a private party seller. He claimed the original owner sent it in to S&W and had it polished. Whatever?? I'd really like to know if it's a Classic or a Classic DX. The ship day would be nice but the dash 3 is close enough for me.
Would S&W verify the polishing claim? Wouldn't polishing deep enough to remove the S&W logo hurt the hardness? Personally, I'd like to have it glass beaded to pearl finish which would at least stress relieve it. I hope someone didn't mess it up. I still like it. A lot!

The AUC prefix lands in a pretty big range: It looks like it shipped sometime between January 1986 and July 1987.

It shipped between December 1993 and January 1994. A factory letter might tell you whether Smith and Wesson did the polishing.

Hey guys I inherited this S&W 686 a few years ago. When my dad died in 2001, my grandmother kept it for home defense. She had my Aunt and her husband take her in to help her in her old age, so she handed it over to me in 2010. I have shot a few hogs, coyotes, etc with it and a lot of cans. I am pretty good with it, wouldn't trade it for the world.
I am looking to see what the shipping date was and any other pertinent information. It reads...
Serial number: AHD 6245
MOD 686
A 21
S (but this "S" is sideways)
63385
I am truly appreciative for any help you may afford me.

The N20000s aren't very specific: Between 1974 and 1977.

For autoloaders like your Model 52 (and the 39, 41, 44, and 46), serial number 1001 starts in 1954 and goes to serial number 115000 in 1970. Your 52 fits somewhere in that range.

With no J prefix the SCSW indicates approx 1962-1969. I would guess yours could fall between approx 1962-1964.
Others who have lettered 36's near this same serial can get a better date.

00Glazz, it looks like you did the right thing and started your own thread to get the shipping info. People do not always notice when a tacked thread has new posts.
