Your Model 581 was shipped sometime in late 1980.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
We are going to need some more information on your Performance Centre 629 as there were a few variations of PC 629's. Your serial number range doesn't show up in any reference material (Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition). Do you have the original box for this revolver?. If so, the shipping date is on the end label under the special order code as a julian date. When you swing out the cylinder what number is on the frame, (e.g.: 629-7). That can give us a range of years that your revolver will fall into. Other than that, you can send off for a S&W historical letter at a cost of $50 which will give you the shipping date, who it was shipped to and any unique features that your 629 has.

Probably shipped approximately 1989.

Your gun left the US and was probably sent to foreign law enforcement or security agency. It was reimported by Century Arms and resold, that's when it got the stamp.

Another new guy here. I just purchased my first police trade-in revolver. I believe it is one of the Aussie trade-ins. It is a blued model 10-10 4" HB with SN BPZ46XX. Would someone be able to help with the age of this revolver? Thank you!

Your Model 64 was shipped sometime during 1992, and your Model 60 was shipped in about 1973.

JosephA,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
Your Model 29 was shipped in 1957. A very desirable revolver, with probably the must popular barrel length. If you can, please post some pic's.

spider murphy,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum. The serial number prefix of your 642 doesn't appear in the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition. Revolvers with a serial# prefix of CHMXXXX (July 2004) were reserved for 642 revolvers, but the CJA prefix doesn't appear. You will have to send off for a historical letter from S&W or someone will have to chime in with a revolver that was lettered with the same prefix to give you a shipping year.

tawcat,
Sadly your serial# prefix doesn't appear in the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition. The serial# prefix of CTAXXXX (October 2004) appears, but not CTP. You will have to send off for a historical letter from S&W to get a shipping date, or someone will have to chime in with a lettered CTP prefix revolver for the proper shipping date.

Thanks, I'm thinking it may be a 2010 date. Thanks so much for looking.

Default 686-3 2.5 inch manufacture date...

Hi!

I am quite new on this forum, I just bought a 686-3 2.5-inch barrel, and it shoots really good, I am quite impressed how it's accurate. I had a 66 no dash some months ago, I loved it too, but I was looking for a shorter barrel and a L frame. I found this one in a gun shop in Switzerland, good price (guns are expensive in Switzerland anyway, much more than in US) and quite beautiful, even if it is not new of course.

Thus, this post is very precious to me, I was looking for the manufacture date for several days, without results. Great idea!

Serial number is BPJxxxx, pics below.

Could someone help me please?

By the way, 2 pics of the 66 I had...

Hello and Welcome to the Forum
Your 686-3 was shipped in October 1993. Both look very nice. I personally love those combat stocks, they really highlight the lines of the revolver, and they are very comfortable to shoot. Best of luck with it.

Hi 824tsv!

Thanks a lot, good to know! :-)

I really appreciate the combat stocks as well, even if they are made for right-handed person... but it is ok.

Thanks one more time, bye!

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
Early J frame serial numbers are kind of sporadic. Without a factory historical letter, the only other resource for serial# to shipping date information is from the book the Standard Catalog of S&W. I have the latest edition (3rd), but the J frame serial# tables leave a lot to be desired. If I was to guess based on the serial# tables in the Standard Catalog I would say about 1958-59. 1957 finished with serial# 125000, and 1962 started with 295000. Hopefully someone else will chime in with a J frame with a close serial# to yours that has a historical letter from S&W. Sorry, but that's the best I personally can do with the info I have on hand. Hope this info helps.
Robert

I've got the 3rd edition book but still trying to figure out how to use it. I have a 629-3 classic S/N BPW45XX, from what I can get out of the book it was shipped between 1990-94. Am I even close with my guess?

Hello,
As I stated in the post above, serial# tables in general are somewhat hard to follow, and some educated guess work must be used in some others. For your Model 629-3, we have to use an educated guess based on the information we have. Your revolver with a serial# prefix of BPW doesn't show up in the serial# tables. However, BPD ( Oct 1993), BPE (Nov 1993), BPK (Dec 1993) and BRF (Aug 1994) do. So, I interpret BPW falling somewhere between December 1993 and August 1994. If I was a betting man I would peg it in early 1994. Falling short of a historical letter, or someone with a revolver with the same serial# prefix who has had it lettered, this is all we got. Hope this kinda helps in your quest.

I have just acquired a Model 12 Nickel Snub that is 99%. Serial number is 9501X. Any dates would be appreciated.

Best.

I've never seen a nickel Model 12. Sounds like you have a very interesting and fairly uncommon finish on that revolver. Please post a pic as I and everyone else would like to see it. If your Model 12 is model marked, then there should be a D prefix before the serial# (D9501x). If that's the case then your revolver was shipped in about 1969. If your revolver is not model marked then there should be C prefix before the serial# (C9501x). If that's the case it was shipped in about 1949. Hope this info helps.

The # on the yoke and side of the frame near the butt is the 9501x. Also, on the bottom of the butt is 5D501xx. I'm confused. I would post pics if I knew how. This is a 12-3. Thanks.....

Rob1109,
Disregard my post. The number you provided in your first post on your Model 12 is an assembly number. Those numbers mean nothing to us. Those numbers are to keep fitted parts together during assembly. The official serial# is always located on the bottom of the grip frame or "butt" of the revolver. With a serial# of 5D501XX your Model 12 was shipped from the factory in 1979.
