Yotdr,
Hello, joined in 2004 and this is your first post??. If not hello and welcome to the forum anyway!!
I would be only speculating on a ship date for your 617-6. The Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition doesn't specifically show your revolvers serial# prefix. I can tell you that the -6 production change came about in 2001 which was the internal lock system's introduction on the 10 shot frame. From the jumble of serial# prefix's in 2003-2004, I would guess your's falls in there somewhere, but I'm not sure.

Gearhounds,
Model 36- Approximately 1963-1964
Model 640- Approximately 2000-2001
The serial# tables for both of these jump around quite a bit, so I can't give you a definitive year. If you have the original box for the 640, the date it was ready to be shipped is under the spec ord code in a julian date format. The only other way for a shipping date is by getting a historical letter from S&W at a cost of $50.00 per piece. Hope this info helps.

Hi. I'm a new member on the forum and I have two question that I hope someone can help me with.

1. I have in my possession one Deactivated .455 Smith & Wesson Revolver Pistol Serial Number 40933 and I would like to know the year it was manufactured.

2. Also I have in my possession one deactivated .455 Revolver Pistol, Serial Number K41 (known to me as a Bulldog 45) . Is this a Smith & Wesson Revolver or some other make?

Your help is much appreciated.

frankbradley,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
Your .455 hand ejector was shipped in about 1916. You probably mean decommissioned vs deactivated. Deactivated would mean that it's been disabled from firing. Your Bulldog .45 sounds like a revolver made by Charter Arms. I'm not aware of a S&W called that. Hope this info helps.

Hello,
In my reference material, 1962 serial#'s started at 295000, then the serial# tables jump to 1969 where they start at 786554. There is no reference material in between those years. I would post your question in the 1961-1980 section. Someone will chime in with a close serial# to your's that has been lettered. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Default Serial for 29-3

Often the grip will cover the number. The serial number can also be found on the frame behind the yoke for some models. For most post-1980 revolvers the serial number will be in an ABC1234 format.

EDIT: As murphydog points out, the date that can be looked up is the ship date, not the date the gun was manufactured.

Take this 686 for example:

It has Ahrends Retro Combat Finger Groove grips that cover the serial number:

If we remove the grips, we can see the serial number (AFE8794):

On this gun, if we look behind the yoke on the frame, we can also see the serial number (AFE8794) and the model number (MOD 686):

Here is a Model 66-2:

The Ahrends Boot Grips make seeing the serial number (BAF7171) easy:

However, if we look behind the yoke, this gun only lists the model number (MOD 66-2):

Some grip makers (like Pachmayr) design their grips so the serial number may be seen. Pachmayr Grippers on a 617:

Pachmayr Compacs on a 627-5 UDR:

Older guns (including some made in the early 1980s) will have a different style of serial number. Here is a 18-4 with the older-style serial number:

The grips block access to the serial number:

Taking the grips off we can see the older-style serial number (21K6944):

The serial number (21K6944) and model number (MOD. 18-4) are also on the frame behind the yoke:

Things that are NOT your serial number:
(The side of the butt behind the grips)

(Numbers on the yoke)

If you provide us with your serial number, those of us with a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson can look up the approximate date your revolver was shipped from Smith and Wesson. For those who have the 3rd edition, serial numbers for most post-1980 revolvers are located on page 400.
I have the Standard Catalogue but it leaves ambiguity about my revolver's date of Man. It is 29-3 with 8 3/8" barrel S/N AJP 0402. Can anyone narrow it down?
Peter

Hello,
Welcome to the forum from another Ontarian.
The Standard Catalog is used as a guide only. Although it's a great resource, there are several errors in it. The serial# tables are helpful, but sometimes you have to read into them for an educated "guestimate" of a ship date if your particular gun's prefix isn't listed. The only true way to find THE correct ship date is via a historical letter from S&W. If you have the original box, you can find the date your revolver was completed and ready to be shipped via a code on the end label. Looking up your supplied serial# in my 3rd edition of the Standard Catalog, I'm guessing it was shipped sometime in 1986. Good luck with your 629, I have a 29-2 with the 8 3/8" barrel and really enjoy it.

I have two questions about my .44 S&W Special revolver. The model is 624 and the serial number is ALW7820.

1. Is there any recall on it that I didn't know?

2. What kind of the ammuntion can I use on it? I had see online that there are the shot shells ammo, hollow point and others. I cannot find the ammuntion at the stores. I don't know what it looks like.

Your help is much appreciate.

Twrtech,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
Your model 624 dates to approx December 1985. It doesn't appear on the recall list that I have attached.
Firearm Recalls and Warnings Index on FirearmsID.com
As far as your ammunition question, I own a model 29-2, 44 Magnum that I hand load ammunition for. I load my rounds using a lead 240 grain semi wadcutter bullet. Ammunition is a personal preference, but I would look for something in a 240 grain cast lead flat nose bullet loaded to a target velocity of around 800fps. I'm not sure what's out there in factory loaded ammo like that but you will find that ammo for your revolver is pretty pricey.

I am a bit confused as to how to use the spec. ord. date, which is "part" of a Julian date.

Is 7055 the 55th. day of 2007....or 1997?
Is 2059 the 59th. day of 1992 or 2002?

I am somewhat confused at how to determine the year of production. Any tricks, or do you just guess at it? The 7055 mentioned above could very well be a 97 or an 02 gun. The first year of production was 1997 and it is still being produced. The gun in question is a 317 with a LGT serial number prefix.

snubbiefan,
You are correct in your interpretation of the Julian date. If your end label has 7055 under the spec. ord. code that would be EITHER 1997 or 2007 and the 55th day of the year which would be Monday February 24th. In my Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition, the serial# tables on page 401 shows your serial# prefix of LGT Airlite 317 as being shipped in March 1997. So, with that info combined with your julian date of Feb 24th, 1997 would be the correct date that your revolver was completed and ready to be shipped. Some educated guesswork is involved sometimes.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
Your 686 was shipped in late 1988. Would it be a -3 by chance? Good luck with your new revolver.

Hello Sergeant,
Welcome to the Forum.
Your Model 36 was shipped from the factory in 1981. This model has been been produced since 1950. They were very popular with Police Departments and were produced as the ".38 Chiefs Special" before they were model marked as the Model 36 in 1957. They were available in blued or nickel finish and were also available with a 2" barrel with a round butt or 3" barrel with a square butt. On my P.D. all Officers above the rank of S/Sgt were issued the 3" square butt version back in the day. Production of the Model 36 ended in 1999. This is just a very quick overview, there were several sight changes and some were even offered with target sights. There have been many variations of this model over the years. If you do a search of this model here on this site you will be pre occupied by many hours of interesting reading. Good luck with your new (to you) Model 36.

Greeting from a long time lurker, first time poster!
I recently purchased a Model 66-2, with a serial number of AWU23xx.
Would someone be so kind as to give me the ship date of this weapon.

Thank you 824tsv! It is a great shooter! Also gentlemen, I have learned more from reading this forum than any other on the internet. I also have a Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman, and an unfired model 19-4. All great guns!

New member with a not so new 586 with an 8 3/8" barrel. Serial number is AEM4196. I got this one from my dad and I know he bought it used in 1989. I am thinking 1987, but I want to make sure. Can anyone check for me?

Default Info on Model 10's

My uncle has a couple of Model 10's in excellent, almost pristine condition. He was trying to figure out the model years as close as possible. If someone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Model 10-5 2" - D804441

Model 10-6 4" - D397017

Both of these a blue steel and spotless. I'm thinking about making him an offer on one of them.

Thanks much.

NewYorkCoupe,
Your Model 60 shipped in December 1984. The overall condition of the revolver means everything when determining value. If the revolver comes with the original box and all box contents will add a little more. I would suggest checking completed listings for Model 60 revolvers on Gunbroker or other auction sites. That should give you a starting point. Hope this info helps and Welcome to the Forum!.

13UGM4N,
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Trying to find a shipping date for your 637-2 is a little tricky without sending away for a S&W historical letter. The reference material most of us use (Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition) has serial number tables that match serial# prefix's to shipping dates. Your 637-2 serial# is not listed in the tables. The tables show serial# prefix CTA in October of 2004. If you have the original box for your 637-2, the end label will show the date that it was completed and ready to be shipped under "SPC ORD" which would be a Julian date. Also if it came with a small envelope with a fired cartridge in it, the date is on the envelope. Let us know if you have the box and we can decipher the date for you, otherwise your 637-2 was shipped sometime after 2004. Sorry, but that's the best I can do. Hope this info helps.
