Default S&W 38 SPL. CTG AirWeight, ADV5393

I'm just a great grandma wanting to get a little more info on my gun I've owned since the 1980s. Can anyone tell me when this shipped, please? I'd also like a link to a manual so I can clean it.

1984.

It looks like a Model 38 Bodyguard. It's a J-frame and sometimes, with affection, called "The Hunchback". The shrouded hammer can be cocked, which allows the gun to be shot in single action.

georgiapeach, First, welcome to the forum! Now if you open the cylinder, the model number should be stamped in the crane recess. Could be a model 38 or a model 49. The "Humpbacks" one of my favorite J frames. Can be fired single or double action, carry easily, and are pretty accurate for their size. I just picked up another the other day. Love them Humpy's!

I committed to purchase a Model 15-2, 4" barrel. Gun appears to be in good condition, and I plan to shoot it.
Often!
The serial number is #K599360.
Wikipedia gives a range between 1961 and 1967.
Could anyone tell me more?

Thanks!

SCSW says your model 15 shipped in 1964. Take a look at the left side of the frame. A number of these were purchased by the USAF from 1960 to 1969. If it's stamped with U.S.A.F., the value may have jumped considerably. Good Luck and good shooting!

Thanks gunny4053!
I don't see any additional markings on the frame. And that's fine. The gun was bought to shoot, even if it is in terrific condition. I was out yesterday w/ some new shooters and brought some light .38 reloads to shoot from my M64 snubbie and my M10 6" pencil barrel.

I forgot how much fun a light .38 is to shoot! Not knocking 9mms and the Magnums, but they were just plain fun! And today, I stumbled across a really nice Model 15 w/ 4" barrel. Almost like I was meant to buy it...

Thanks again for the info. I can't wait to get my hands on it now and shoot it!

Good morning hooptie and welcome to the forum. Your 29-3 looks to have a date mid to latter 1987. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the Forum,
If you open the cylinder the Model# will be marked on the frame. Could be a couple of different models. The serial# dates to about 1972. Report back what Model# you see and we will give you an overview of that revolver.

October 1985 - January 1986.

Product code was 101224, and it was called the Classic Magnum. The S&W standard production guns were identical to the ones sold by Lew Horton. There's no practical difference.

A friend of mine has inherited a few guns and I might be interested in one. It's a S&W 69-2 357 nickel or chrome with about a 4" barrel. The serial number is 15299. I haven't seen it, so all of this is what he told me over the phone. It came from a retired highway patrolman. any help will be appreciated.

The gun is likely stainless steel.

I've never heard of a M69-2. There was an experimental Model 69 supposedly made in the '70's but they never left the factory and only a handful were made. Doubtful you friend would have one unless he's an ex-S&W vice president or cleaning man. In any event, I'd never heard of a -1 or -2 version of that gun.

It's possible it's a 66-2, and the second "6" is poorly stamped. That happens all the time, and Model 66's are as common as any Smith revolver. It's also possible it's something I've never seen or heard about before.

Then there's the question of the s/n. That's not the format I'd expect. A 66-2 I would expect to have three letters followed by four numbers. Ex: ABC1234. Or possible, but unlikely, two numbers, the letter "K", then four numbers. Ex: 50K1234.

So, to get the "official" s/n, have your friend read it off the bottom of the grip frame. The stocks my need to be removed to see it, depending on the type of stocks it wears.

Try to get some pictures and a valid s/n, until then, I'm stumped.

The Spec Ord. number is a ship date code for.........
November 19, 1985
The Product Code 104206 was for the standard production 6-inch M686 with the Black Blade rear sight. The same gun with a White Outline rear sight (WO on the box) was the 104208.

I always thought it was kinda funny S&W had a whole 'nuther Product Code for two identical guns, with the only difference being the rear sight blade.

I got to see the 357 today and it is a model 65-2. Also on the back of the grips on the frame is THP-R2570 which I know the owner was a TN. Highway Patrol. The grips are over the butt of the frame so could this be a serial number? I was able to make a few pics which Ill try to post in a few minutes. Thanks.

I'm always impressed with ex-LEO service weapons. Typically they are finish challenged, but great shooters. That one looks very nice. It's wearing a set of target stocks which IMHO make shooting these with full power magnum loads a bit uncomfortable, but shooting 38 specials very nicely. You will have to remove the stocks to see the official serial# on the bottom of the grip frame or "butt" of the revolver. Post the first 3 or 4 digits of the serial# and we will be able to give you an approximate shipping year. The number on the back strap is either a TN HP rack number or it could be the I.D. of the Trooper who it was issued to.

Thank you for the reply. Would I be okay if I offered 3-4 hundred? I wouldn't be able to remove the grips before I buy it.

$300-$400 would be a good buy IMHO.

The M65-2 was made in the 1977 to 1982 time frame. It is "Pinned and Recessed", two desirable features to S&W aficionados. This gun was very popular with Law Enforcement back in the day, and being LEO marked, in general, neither adds or subtracts from it's overall value.

P&R means the barrel is secured with a pin thru the receiver (you can see the head of the pin on either side), and the cylinder is recessed so the bullet cases fit flush with the rear face of the cylinder. S&W discontinued both of these practices beginning in 1982.... to the chagrin of S&W collectors.

$300 to $400 would be a good price. Slightly below the typical market price right now.

Hi guys! Great forum here.

I came across it looking for info for a gun that I ended up purchasing tonight.

It's an old 1980s Sw 686. Its marked "MOD 686" and has no dash and no M stamp.

Can someone look up the serial for me please? Its AHT 2074.

Thank you!

The triple-alpha four-numeric s/n's are my deal. Member 824tsv will be along shortly to help you with the other s/n.

Not much else to say without a picture. Don't even know the barrel length or if they might have any special features.

April - May 1985.

The Model 686 is a L-frame and as introduced in 1980. It was immediately adopted by a large number of Law Enforcement Organizations. Making it the "last hurrah" for police revolvers. By the end of the '80s most LEOs were transitioning to crunch-n-clickers. A large number of these ex-LEO L-frames are now in civilian hands.

S&W's official name for the M686 is Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless.

Default Would like to date my 686

I have a 686 2" bbl and would just like to date it.
I understand the differences between the 66 and the 686 as I have had both.
What type of grip options came with the 686. Mine has wood Smith medallion finger groove types.
The serial number is ALWO3xx
I don't have a clue as to the year and if if the gun is a desirable
model or not.
I like it,
Ron

It's a "no dash" model. An early M686 variant. Though not rare, the 2 1/2-inch was made in the fewest numbers. People seem to like the no-dash, but I don't seen them selling for a premium. It's just a "nice to have" for some, I guess.

All pre-lock pre-MIM M686's are desirable. Personally, I prefer a -3 or -4. They actually have a few desirable features earlier guns don't.

Regarding the stocks, sounds like you have what's called Combat Stocks. They were original. Very sought after. Those stocks by themselves can sell for $125 to $200. In a few more years, if things keep going like they have, I think they might be worth more than the gun.

The locks started to appear in 2001 and thus ended my interest in new S&W revolvers.

pretty sure this is the grip I have on my 686. I have a pachmyar that doesn't look nearly as good with no finger groves as well but haven't shot with it yet. Id bet its more comfortable. I wish the below grip was a bit longer because my hand hangs down over it a bit which makes it a tad uncomfortable to shoot with.

New shoes today...

What might this gun be worth? 686-4 snub nose 1994 ship date
