Ask in the 1896 to 1961 revolver forum.

It's an early example. The CS was introduced in 1950. But the condition is an issue. In guess something in the $250 to $400 range.

Default Mod 686

I have a Model 686 serial no. AAB4517 in SS with a 4 inch barrel. Can you tell me the date of manufacture or ship date? It has not been modified for the recall. Should I get it done?

I'm confident that your's was shipped in 1980. Member Kernel Crittenden can probably nail that down to month. If you have the box, I can tell you the production date from information on the end label. As far as the recall is concerned, I own a couple of revolvers from that time period and none show symptoms of the recall. Welcome to the Forum BTW.

Default Thanks for the response and welcome

I decided to send it in for the recall modification and found out that it was manufactured in 1981. While getting info on the S&W website regarding that firearm I also found out that my Walther PK 380 had a recall. What are the odds of that

Default newbie S&W owner

Just picked up my Model 10-5, and would like some more info, please. Serial # is D88xx, square butt, 4" barrel, tapered. Serial # was electro-penciled on left side of frame. Previous owner said this was common to police use when they put grips on that covered the Ser. # on the bottom of frame. Paid $200 and change, has holster wear but immaculate bore. Appears well cared for. Any info as to ship date and opinions are welcome. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum,
The serial# dates to about 1968. I've personally seen dozens with the serial# marked on the frame under the cylinder. They are great shooters. I use one in PPC (stock service revolver) matches.

Hi All,

I recently purchased a S&W 629 6.5" .44 mag from an online seller and I went to pick it up tonight from my FFL. I was told by the seller it was "Factory New". Upon inspection, we noticed the S&W laser etching was slightly worn off on the left side of the frame near the grip (about where a shooter's thumb would rest), and that it had a lot of wear marks.

I am of the opinion that this is a used gun, and the seller is trying to pawn it off as new. I am wondering if someone can give me a year of manufacture for the gun so I can confirm or reject my suspicions. The serial number is DCCXXXX.

Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated!

Default Thanks for this

I own a model 27 Smith & Wesson with the 6-inch barrel. The gun store where I bought it said it was made/shipped in 1958. I would like to double check that information.

Serial Number: S 192389

Model: 27

Screws: 4 -- I think one is probably hidden underneath the grip

Default Hey guys

Hello guys, I am new to the forum as well as new to wheel guns. I just got a model 29-3, i am wondering what year it is, the serial is ADU 79xx. I also have some questions about the stock on it, when it is removed the front of the frame and the back end is rounded. It does have an "N" stamped on it. It looks weird when I have the wooden stock that was on it when I got it, it looks unfinished because it does not follow the contour of the actual stock, it curved in away from it. Anyway, thanks a ton guys and looking forward to getting my new wheel gun out there

The revolver looks like it has a round butt and it's wearing square butt stocks. Please post some pic's of the revolver out of the holster with the grips off.

Here it is with no stocks on. I would like to get the proper grip so it will cover the unfinished, exposed back of the handle..any info on the year? Or where I could get a stock for this rounded design even if it be rubber?

I'm certainly no expert, but I don't believe a round butt Model 29-3 with a 6" barrel was offered back then. My gut feeling is that it's been worked on by bubba. It's definately a round butt, but I hope for your sake N frame round butt stocks will fit. I would post your inquiry and pic in the regular 1980-Present forum so everyone will see it. I don't own a N frame round butt to compare with your pic. I certainly hope N frame round butt stocks will work for you. The serial# dates to about 1984ish.

1984 is correct. Probably May, give or take.

Product code for a 6-inch nickle gun was 101212. (Hint: You can use that as a search term). Would of shipped with square butt Target Stocks. Originals wouldn't fit because of your gun's modifications.

The round butting looks aftermarket, but what you desire is easily obtained. You need a pair of round-to-square Target Stocks. A very common thing. They're call "conversion" stocks. Lot of companies make them.

Since the gun has been modified the collector interest is destroyed, along with a lot of the value. Therefore, I wouldn't spend big bucks for new grips.

For less than $50 delivered, you could pick up some very nice converstion stocks on eBay, made in Thailand. Would look just like the factory stocks but way more attractive and with better figuring. Factory stocks of that era were nothing to get excited about.

That question was directed at a thread regarding a M19-5.

Round butt K-frame stocks might go on you M29, but they won't fit right. They're to small. But it depends on how your grip frame was cut.

Is the s/n still on the bottom of the grip frame? That's something you don't want to remove.

Look on the bottom of the grip frame. The s/n will be clearly inscribed there. You may have to remove the grips.

Give or take. It's a stainless K-frame, it was named the Combat Magnum, and they were popular duty guns with many LEO's. Would need at least a picture to say more.

If you have the box there's a date code on the lable with the exact day. Would look something like: 041215.

I have a 586 6" Serial Number ACU2930 I bought used several years ago. I seem to remember seeing 82 or 1982 or something like that stamped on the handle frame when I changed grips. Any info? Thanks in advance.

Thank you! The previous owner told me he bought it last year but I wanted to make sure because I got a pretty sweet deal on it.

The date on the stocks should predate the gun's ship date. Usually by a few weeks to a few months.

If you have the factory box I could tell you more.

It looks like a 3-inch, which is the least common and most desirable. Grips are correct Magnas and, though not pristine, look decent. It's from the non pinned & non recessed era which makes it less desirable to traditionalist. No box and papers hurts some.

With educated buyers and sellers, assuming it's standard production and average condition for it's age, it would likely trade hands in the $500 to $750 range. Almost twice what the 4-inch version might sell for.

I have a model 60 (no dash) in 38 spl. It's a non-pinned, no internal lock with SN ADA1018. And a model 640-1 SN CEU 8904. If anyone could tell me a ship date on my guns I would really appreciate it.
