Default Inherited Model 38 - need date

New to forums in general and this one in particular so if this is wrong place I apologize. Just inherited grandfather's S&W bodyguard and I believe its a model 38. Says "Airweight 38 SPL. CTG." on the right side of the barrel. Has the camel back hump to cover hammer. No model stamped behind the yoke and serial # on bottom of frame is 91194. Any help or redirection would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Forum,
You have what is known as "The Bodyguard Airweight" or collectors sometimes refer to them as the Pre-Model 38. The serial# dates the revolver to about 1956, just before S&W assigned Model#'s to their firearms.

Probably the 18th or the 19th. If you have the factory box the date is likely on the label. It will look like: 081916.

Spec. Ord. number.
That's pretty cool about the M65 being your same birth month and year. All I had to play with in my crib was a stupid stuffed animal.

Thank you, sir. Your info is much appreciated.

I do have the factory blue cardboard box.
Here's the info:

It says "420" on the top left corner.

Model No: 10 *** Caliber: .38 *** Barrel: 4 *** Fin.: B *** Stock: SB
Features: (nothing)
Serial No.: AZL 954_
Product Code: 100108
Spec. Ord.: 8193

Please excuse my ignorance, but what do these numbers tell? I'd very much appreciate any additional info on this piece.

Thank you!

Probably about the 19th. Since you have the box, on the label will be a date code that looks something like: 081916.

Roughly......

January - May 1995.

The -7 was the last .38 Spl M60 with forged hammer, trigger (with a firing pin riveted to it), and other internal parts. Built on the old style frame.

It was superceded in 1996 by the -9 with a new larger frame, chambered in .357 Magnum, a frame mounted firing pin, and metal injection molded (MIM) parts.

The product code for the 6 1/2-inch gun was 103582.

AHB and AHC are very common s/n prefixes for the M624. I've seen more than 40 in the box. S&W, for some reason, cranked out thousands of M624's in a short period of time.

I don't know why, but I've never seen Smith dedicate so much of their production capacity to one single model, albeit briefly. It's a curious thing.

The product code is a unique identifier for that specific revolver in that specific configuration. The pc is actually the most accurate way to describe any S&W.

The Product Code tells me your Model 10 was a standard blue (B) production gun with a traditional "pencil" barrel and shipped with square butt (SB) Service Stocks (also called "Magnas", typical of that era).

The Spec. Ord. number is a code for the ship date. It tells me your gun shipped......
August 12, 1988.
Earlier I should of wrote "June - October 1988". Since the other AZL's I've recorded were in that range.

Your gun is officially the last "A" s/n I've ever recorded, based on it's alphabetical sequence. Out of almost 4,000 s/n's. How about that? And "no", it adds no value in the market place, since I'm probably the only other person who even cares.

The official catalog name for your revolver was The Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless. Though that name was never inscribed on the gun itself.

The -3 was made from 1988 to 1994. The first -4's started appearing around May of 1994. So your gun is from the last year of the -3's.

The hammer and trigger on your -3 aren't stainless. They're carbon steel with a flash chromed finish. In some respects it's better than stainless.

That's amazing!!!
Thank you, sir.

This Model 10 was my very first firearm, I bought it in what looked to be unfired condition (no turnline, with original box, manual, warranty, "postcard" and unopened cleaning rod), and it was made the same year I was born... so it holds special value to me.

And no, that also doesn't add any market value, but I don't care.

Thanks again for the info!

I would suggest posting your inquiry in the Handejector 1896-1961 Forum. Not enough information (for me anyway) to be able to I.D. your revolver. Have a look at this sticky and post more information and if possible some pic's. Someone will be able to help you out.

That's not a proper s/n.

Read it off the bottom of the grip frame. You might have to remove the stocks to see it.

Include all letters and numbers you see.

Once you tell us the s/n, we can date the gun and tell you the proper box to look for.

Thumbs up Dating a model

Hello forum, I have been reading for a while and finally signed up. I have limited access due to a rural location. I was hoping to get some help dating some models ( NOT those models ). I have an old one I bought years ago and a couple more recently acquired.
65-5 BKZ8858 3" custom
19-4 40K8483 6" blue
60-3 BND1218 3" target

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Default Dating a model

Thanks! I've had the 65 since new but just picked up the 60. I'll have to work on the 19. It seems older. Hopefully someone out there will chime in.
You've been a big help.

But the way s/n's were assigned in those days it could be as late as 1983.

Is the S&W logo on the left or right side of the frame?

Right side. Also if it makes a difference, it says just 681, no dashes.

The earliest L-frames had it on the right side. They moved it over to the left side after a few years, and it's been there ever since.
