Is the S&W trademark logo on the right side? The early L-frames had it on the right.

I have a 617-1 with a 4" barrel, serial # BSY-2720. Any info would be most helpful since I bought it from a friend who has since passed on 10 years ago or so. It has been a "safe queen" for me until recently.

May of 1995.
The product code for the 4-inch M617 was 100564. That's a searchable term.

By 1995 the rubber Hogue grips were standard factory issue.

Gentlemen,
I just got into a S&W M18-4. I intend to purchase the book next month in Tulsa. However, until then could someone give me a time period for this? The serial # is 78K2XXX. (An '80's gun?) Thank you!

On the case label there's a 4-digit number, the Spec. Ord. Number.

What is it?

The s/n prefix BBU makes sense. Assuming that's it, your Model 60 shipped in......
January - February 1989.
The s//n is inscribed very clearly on the bottom of the grip frame. You may have to remove the stocks to see it. If the prefix is not BBU, let me know.

Hello, I'm new to this site. I have purchased a model 66-2 4" 357. I have the s&w 4th edition, but my serial number ahw5xxx can't be located. Does anyone have a revolver starting with ahw? Any help is appreciated.

Default K-22 masterclass?

I have a k-22 masterpiece that I believe is a 1952 built.
The serial number is k 147507. But I was wondering if you could tell me if its a model one or what not. I know the grips aren't the original. But I want to know exactly what it is.

Give or take a month or so. You can call Lew Horton. They will tell you if it theirs, and send you a free history letter on their letterhead.

It's a standard production Smith, and LH is just the distributor. LH doesn't open up the guns and sprinkle any foo-foo dust in them.

Of course, you always pay less if you can, but that is not an unreasonable price range for that gun in excellent condition.

You have a K-22 Masterpiece. You are correct with the approximate shipping year (1952). Collectors call your revolver a "pre model 17" because Smith & Wesson started using Model #s in about 1957 and post 1957 versions of yours was called the Model 17.

Default Ship date request of two firearms

I have just purchased two new revolvers and am wondering if they can be dated. One of them is NIB, the other is used. I am not sure if these can be dated, if they are very new, but thought I would ask.
They are as follows:
686 SSR, serial # CPP7408
617-6, serial DBP4927
The 617 is used.
Thanks in advance for any info about production/ship dates,
Robert Hassenpflug

June 2013.

November - December 2007.

The precise date code is on the box label. Look for a 4-digit number. The M686 will likely begin with a "3", and the M617 a "7".

What are those two 4-digit numbers?

What are the gun's product codes? (6-digit numbers that will begin with "1").

I haven't actually taken possession of them yet. I had to look at photos on Gunbroker to get these numbers. They are only viewable for the 617. It is 7338 and a product code of 160584. The 686 doesnt show the box end in the pics...
I will provide them when I get it.
I sold a 586-4 3" and bought these two stainless models to replace it. I never knew it had the value it did and preferred stainless, when I learned, I sold it and bought these.
Thanks again,
Robert Hassenpflug

It would of left the factory in the period around.....
November of 1987 to January of 1988.
A 6-inch gun (you don't say barrel length) would have a product code of 102204, ordinary Target Stocks, and shipped in the blue one-piece cardboard box that was common at that time.

Edited - removed unrelated text.

I bought an electronic version of "The Book" today but am having a bit of a challenge navigating it to the right serial number / year of mfgr.

I'm considering a 686 that the seller says is a CS-1. He sent a photo of the yoke & it has MOD 686, above the 686 is an "M" and the top line is 09-space- 1 and the s/n is ANS3676. This differs from the photos I found in the incredible thread about CS-1 guns so while I really don't think the seller is trying to trick me, things don't match up. If I read the serial number section correctly should I assume this gun was produced in 1987? The digits are what's confusing me because they don't seem to decode properly to a year or month as I read things.

He also has a 2.5" Model 19-5 he says was a State Dept gun. I don't have the s/n yet but is there a serial number range that it should fit into?

Thanks!

Lastly he has an unfired 2" Model 37 with everything. If I read the book correctly it was discontinued for a few years but re-released with the last year of production being 2006. It's not in the small blue box with brown paper but has the cardboard insert with the plastic plug through the trigger guard. The suggested value chart says ANIB = $1000 but would this be for a very early gun?

Thanks!
OK - I can hardly believe it but I made a mistake. The 686 has CS 1 and NOT 09 1. Time for better glasses.

Based on the s/n, the M686 likely left the factory in.....
February of 1987.
ANS is a known prefix for CS-1 guns. It should be marked as a CS-1 gun in the yoke cut out (ignore any markings on the yoke itself). Markings aside, there are obvious differences between a CS-1 and a normal M686 from that time, so it wouldn't be real easy to fake.

For the State Dept. M19's, known prefixes include (but are not limited to)....
AYY, AYZ, ANR, ANP, and ANN.
Regarding your other questions, this thread is mainly focused on helping new members with ship dates. If you'd like to have a deeper discussion on some gun, open a new thread in the main forum. A lot more eyes will see it there.
