Your K38 Masterpiece dates to 1948, and your M&P dates to the late 20's (1927-28ish)

Your Model 65 dates to 1977. The Kernel will be along to date your Model 67.

Many thanks!

It's great to find out how old these revolvers are.

They're great shooters.

Early L-frame, likely has S&W trademark on right side.

Thank you very much! I bought this about 20 years ago in like new condition. Sold it to a buddy about 17 years ago due to falling on hard times. I traded him a model 60 to get it back and was horrified by the condition. Bore good, internals good. Some surface rust on frame and horrible pitting on the side plate trade mark. This is going to be a shooter and I don't have much hope for refurbishing finish so depending on the quote from S&W I think it's going to have to be a bead blast re-blue. I rejuvenated the original grips with a little linseed oil...

Welcome to the Forum,
The 41 Magnum has a huge following. Lot's of threads on the Model 57/58 revolvers. The serial# of your Father-in-law's dates to 1973.

You should start a new thread on the main forum page, post your pics and ask what the members there think.

That's a lot of drama for one gun. I vote for I restoration. Especially since the stocks look so nice.

That piece of .38 Special perfection would of left Springfield, Massachusetts in.....

September 1998 - January 1999.

If you have the original factory box for that gun, post the Product Code and Spec. Ord. numbers. I'd also like to know the dash number.

Thank you! I picked it up today. Unfortunately no original packaging came with the gun but it's in beautiful shape. It's a -9

Hello all. New member here. I recently inherited a model 66-3 6" with a serial # BBZ2079 w/o any paperwork. I was curious if someone could give me the year it was produced.....and any other info that I would need to know before I started putting some rounds through it. I appreciate any help or comments. Thanks.

That serial number prefix was inscribed on revolvers that shipped in.....

Febuary to May 1989.

Smith & Wesson's name for this gun was the Combat Magnum Stainless. Product Code for a 6-inch version like yours was 102709. The -3 was made in the 1988 to 1994 time frame. It most likely left the factory wearing traditional wood Target Stocks.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your revolver you should start a new thread and post a few pictures in the main forum. A lot more eyes look at that. The Model 66 is a very popular gun with our membership, so I think you would get a good response.

S/N is 153186

The Standard Catalog is a bit lacking on some early J frames. It shows:
1957 117770-125000
1962 295000

Your's is in there somewhere. More than likely 58-59ish.

Welcome to the Forum,
The numbers you have provided are not the serial#. The serial# can be found on the bottom of the grip frame (see pic). You may have to remove the stocks to see it.

Happy 4th everyone!!

I recently received a gift of a model 29-4 With a full underlug, hogue monogrip and unfluted cylinder Serial# BDS2633

Interested in its date of manufacture and the history behind it. Ive never seen a 44 magnum like this from Smith and Wesson before.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

November 1991 to January 1992.
As an steel J-frame made in the modern era, your M640 is safe to shoot with +P ammo. Of course, to do so will accelerate wear on both the gun and the shooter.

That gun likely shipped in....
July of 1985.
If the rear sight has a White Outline it's a product code 103503. If the rear sight is a plain Black Blade it's a product code 103502.

Just a Reference Point for Old Timers like myself. My Two Favorite S&W's which will be inherited by my Son when I'm no longer too ornery to die but will certainly be with me until I do is first, the S&W Model 59, double stack 9mm manufactured the very same time as my Wife (but has been with me 20 years longer) and here's your reference point for the original Model 64 Revolver Fans And Owners. My Stainless Steel, still almost "NIB" Model 64 was manufactured with her beautiful tapered barrel and "Standard Pressure" Rating, no +P please, in .38 S&W Special with her Serial Number of D5968xx was brought into existence in 1973. For you history buffs, it was the Nixon Era, about the same time the N. Vietnamese released a mess of our Veterans from the POW Camps, the OPEC Nations had us in lines down the road on alternating days to get gas for our cars and Casey Kasem was having a blast in his third year of the American Top 40 Countdown. Good Lord I just made myself feel so bloody Old.
The Serial Numbers of our beloved Firearms are their DNA, marked in Time and for some, they bring us incredibly special memories of the day. They bring us joy in sharing the memories of being at the range with family or on Duty with our Siblings in Blue, the other group of family and loved ones...
Today as I look at my S&W M&P 2.0 and take my Model 64 into my lap, I can't help but admire and smile in the knowledge that the Genius of the Designer's at S&W would make her Founders most proud of the American Tradition of being Strong and Steadfast to her Customers as our Constitution has been to America's Citizens.
Don't yet own a Smith & Wesson? Go purchase one from any time period and experience exactly what I'm saying.
Be well, be safe and be blessed in all things.
Sincerely and Respectfully Yours,
... ~"Gunny Jack"
