I just acquired a S&W 686 no dash, "M" stamped, 4" revolver, S/N ADB7244. It does not appear to have ever been fired. Would please advise an approximate ship date and value? attached are some photos. Thanks!

Sorry I don't have the original box. The person I bought it from had it in a blue plastic S&W box with no label. Here is a photo with the SN and mod 686

Default S&W 686-4 with 2 1/2 inch barrel

Hi

I just bought this pristine 686-4 with pretty wood combat grips.

Serial number is BRJ 63xx.

Believe model number is 104231 ?

Any idea when it was built ?

Thanks

It most likely left the factory in.....

November of 1983 - May of 1984.

In that time frame, give or take. Value in today's market for a pristine example with its factory stocks, lacking its original box and paperwork, is something in the $550 to $800 range, depending on a multitude of details.

March - May of 1994.

Yes, I would say it is the product code 104231 variation. Technically speaking, the model number is "686-4".

Thanks a lot, very kind of you.

I have to find my S&W catalogue, in a box somewhere after a fire and two movings.

Gentlemen, I just bought two Model 64's. One for me and one for my wife. Can you tell me when they probably were built? Did these have any manufacturing issues I should be aware of?
Ser. # BET4767

Thanks

S&W has been perfecting that lockwork since 1899. There's very little to go wrong. Seriously, if you popped the side plate of an original Military & Police and looked at the action, you'd have a hard time discerning the differences between it and your M64's. A few drops of gun oil once a year, and even that's probably to often. It's a tank.

These are the two guns I picked up for $250 each. I'm looking to put the Pachmayr Diamond Pro Grip on them. Which size will fit best? On the site they show K frame 10, K frame 11, etc. Didn't know which is the right one. I'm a novice at guns. Thanks for the help.

They both look like K frames. Open the cylinder and look to see the Model # stamped into the frame. I'm guessing a Model 64 (lower) and a Model 65
(upper). Both are K frames.

They're both Model 64's. You can tell because of the fixed sights. It's also known as the Military & Police Stainless, .38 Special. Probably "dash fives", as in M64-5.

You want grips (S&W likes to call them "stocks") to fit a K-frame square butt. That size is universal. Though, I kinda like it the stocks they have now.

Hi folks,

Thanks in advance to any who might have a moment to find and post the ship date for this fine S&W we recently picked up. We love this revolver...what a great shooter.

Welcome to the Forum,
My best guess would be 1983ish.

It might be a LH, you can call or email them and ask. Non LH guns are identical in every respect. LH does no gunsmithing. $1,000 is not beyond the pale, especially since the Combats are present. Probably getting near the upper end of the price range, considering there's no box.

Give or take. That's the product code for the 6 1/2-inch gun. Prices on these 10mm's are surprisingly strong. I'd guess something in the $900 to $1600 range. To the higher end if in perfect pristine condition, and box & original wood Combat Stocks are present.

Default Looking at a 686

I have run across a 686 with a 6" barrel the serial number is AJH 3492 the asking is $425 the gun is in pristine shape. What year was this gun shipped? Is the price a good one? As the name implies I am new to the shooting world. Any help is appreciated.

Jump on it quick! That's over 200 less then I've seen in a long time.

December 1985 - January 1986.
That price is very fair, though 6-inch guns aren't quite as desirable as the 4-inch and shorter barrels in today's market. It's a great range gun.

Thank you, Kernel. I am on the large size 6' 2" 235 with XXL hands so the 6" barrel seems to fit me. I got to take it to the range early this afternoon. I had a silhouette target and put 20/20 in the 7 or better at 12 yards.

Hi there! 😊

How is everyone? And can I ask some help, please?

My grandmother passed away recently and I found my great grandfather’s revolver.

All I know (or think I know) is that it’s probably a 32 S&W Long Pre Model 30 (32 Hand Ejector) with a 2” barrel and 6 rounds.

The serial number is 659125, can someone please tell me its year? I’d really appreciate that!

Thanks in advance! 👍🏻😊For new members looking for date of manufacture info (how to find your serial number)-c1d8a8a1-7724-4511-b83e-1ae498a6ed07-jpg

March - May 1991.

Without pictures, or even knowing barrel length, not much else to say.

Here it is with 4" barrel. Supposedly turned in from a prison or something.

You will have a better chance of a response if you post your question in the Handejector 1896-1961 section. Serial# tables for your revolver are lacking at best. I can only give you a general date range of several years. Someone will hopefully chime in with a similar revolver with a close serial# to give you a general idea of when it was shipped. S&W didn’t ship in serial# order.

Smith Trail Boss, 3.5 inch ported barrel. Serial rsr9xxx. I think it's a 629-5, has case color hardened finish trigger and hammer, which usually means mim.

Thanks!

This gun most likely shipped in.....

September of 1999.

Though it could be earlier. It's the product code 103408, and it probably is a -5. The barrel is considered a 3-inch. As a -5 it would have MIM parts and a frame mounted firing pin.

RSR had these made as Special Editions, spread out over several years, starting in 1996 as -4's. I haven't seen a published number, but I would guess a couple of thousand were made over time.

From what I've seen, about one out of three were Mag-Na-Ported, which is something RSR had done after they got the guns from S&W.

It's likely that gun left the factory in.....

December of 1989.

Based on the low s/n, but S&W continued to use the BEN prefix over time into early 1990, some of the higher s/n's as late as 1991. This is a little unusual, because in that era S&W did not normally use it's prefixes in that manner.
