Default Mfg. date and needed help to remove yoke screw

New to this forum. I just purchased a used 686-3 S/N: BPF4961. Any idea when it was manufactured? Also, the yoke screw (or crane screw?) is so tight I am afraid of messing up the screw head slot. Any suggestions of how to get the screw loosened our out would be appreciated.

A buddy of mine dropped a model 10-6 off tonight for me to look at because it needs a little fine tuning and he asked me if I had any idea how old it was... I said no but know who does... any dates on a model 10-6 serial #41450? Thanks in advance, Nick

April - May of 1993.
For the screw you should ask in the Gunsmithing portion of the forum. This page is just for ship dates.

That number sounds like the assembly number from the yoke cut on the frame. The serial# is located on the bottom of the butt. You may have to take the grips off to see it. If the revolver is a Model 10-6 the serial# will start with either the letter C and have 6 digits, or it may also start with the letter D. If the serial# is D41450 it dates to about 1968.

Your Model 36 exhibits a couple of features (thumb release and stocks) that makes me think you are not providing the correct number as the serial#. First, the serial# is located on the bottom of the grip frame and may have up to 6 digits (not 7 like your post) and may contain the letter J at the beginning of the serial#.
If your serial# is 299XXX it dates to about 1962ish.
If your serial# begins with the letter J and has six digits starting with the number 2 it dates to about 1974-75.

Without a S&W Archive letter it's impossible. We can only speculate. I followed your other thread asking the same question. My guess would be early 1962, but again it's pure speculation based on what little resource information is available.

Product code in those days was 103609. I see the first -1's in about 1984 and the last ones in '87. Smith kept on making the 103609, it just transitioned to a -2 in 1988.

Thanks. So my “old” box is probably pretty close to my “new” gun.

The gun originally left the Mothership in Springfield, Mass., in.....

January - February of 1989.

It appears to be a product code 101254, which was called the Classic Hunter. The unfluted cylinder and full lug barrel being its special features.

The marking on the underside of the barrel indicate it was exported to Europe. The flaming bomb and crown show it entered the EU at the Belgium port of Leige. From there it went to Wischo who is S&W's distributor in Western Europe (Wischo GmbH, Erlangen, Germany. Now called WAIMEX).

Unless you are a European member, at some point the gun was returned to the USA for sale.

Give or take. Look on the box label. There will be a number, something like: 032918.

What is that number?

I needed some help with this Model 37 Airweight in Nickel. It has the original box, but I can’t make out the numbers on it. The S/N is J999314.

June - August 1998.
I have my own database of ship dates based on the study of box labels. Don't use the SCoSW so can't help you with it.

I just joined, hoping to get manufacture/ship date on my revolver. It was my dads carry gun, that he bought from a local police officer. No box, and no info on original purchase date. My dad gave it to me shortly before he died, but I never thought to ask about details.

Model 36 nickel plated .38spl SN J22940

67Firebird,
Welcome to the Forum.
Nice looking Model 36. My condolences for the passing of your father. The serial# dates it to about 1969. A date closer than the year shipped will require a historical letter from the S&W Historian at a cost of $75.00

In my database of serial numbers I have a M27-4 with a BDB56xx s/n that shipped March 2, 1990. That said, I also have several other revolvers with BDB s/n's that shipped 1989. Nothing alarming in that. It's just how S&W is sometimes.

The Model 27 is built on the N-frame, and is known simply as the .357 Magnum. It was historically S&W's most premium standard production revolver. They lavish small details on it not found on typical massed produced guns. Like the cross hatched top strap and rear sight tang, and the deeper polish.

The -4 is not the most desirable variation, but it's still a very fine gun. It's old enough that it still has all forged parts, which the purist like.

I’ve got a similar 6 inch 29-5 Classic Hunter, from 1991 I believe, serial Nbr BFW 1312, product code 101282. They’re beautiful guns, and a great shooter too.

If you have the box what's the 4-digit Spec. Ord. number? (Likely begins with "1").

To be honest I am not sure I kept the box. I bought it in 1993, I was 25 then, and maybe I did not see the need to keep the box. I’ll look up in the attic.

Hello from Italy,
joined the Forum a couple weeks ago and my main interest in S&W is the Antiques section, where some kind guys have helped me in clearing doubts about the Schofields revolver I'm purchasing shortly.

However I've got a Model 29-10 too (some years ago) already got used by former owner but only a little bit - he found it somehow unmanageable when shooting full-power ammos, the less powerful ones were not funny to shoot in his opinion so he gave away the revolver. Almost new, maybe only a couple boxes of Remington original rounds.
Great fun indeed for me to use it, even more so with powerful ammos - no bothering about how to hit exactly the bullseye when at the range, just to have some fun before expending all the rounds. In addition, I like this 'Classic' so much - really perfect in finish and details, even though a friend of mine does state he never will change his older (early '60s) specimen for a modern classic.
Mine is, as I can say, without the least defect. I'd like to know if possible its mfg. or shipping date, a great Thanx in advance for the work of searching.
S/N is DBB9791

Here some pics of the gun, one it's me having a hard time in emulating 'Dirty Harry' ah ah... nobody is perfect, I know that. Again, Thanx very much.
Franco.
