If you ask S&W they will say "no" to +P. Conventional wisdom is any all steel Smith made post WWII can safely shoot +P. It will not "fly apart", but hundreds and thousands of of rounds of +P will cause it to loosen up. I say "why bother". Modern . 38 Special is far more effective than ammo made just 10 years ago. Buy the proper loads and you won't need +P.

Good afternoon gentlemen,

First post here.

I brought home my 4th smith revolver today. It's my first pre-lock and couldn't be happier. It's a 686-4. I know roughly when it was made but was hoping you can pin it down. Serial is CAD1289.

Also on the box label under SPEC ORDER it says 4340 007. Is that significant at all?

December 6, 1994.
The Spec. Ord. number is a simple code for the ship date. First number is the year. Last three numbers are the day, counting down in sequence from 1 to 365. It's called a Julian calendar method.

The 007 means it was made for Bond, James Bond. Kidding. I don't know what it means. About one Smith in 30 has this extra mystery number on the label after the Spec. Ord. number. There are about seven common numbers and series of letters you see used repeatedly.

You probably know that many consider the -4 variation to be the most desirable version of the Distinguished Combat Magnum.

Thank you for the information. If my revolver addiction keeps growing I'll have to invest in one of the Smith bibles to keep track of what I have.

I had read that the 686-4 was one of if not the best. It wasn't until yesterday that I had proof. It's gonna look real nice once I shine it up and put some ahrends grips on it. Can't wait to blast away with it. Then I'll have to figure out what I want next.

Thank you again

Welcome to the Forum,
The A prefix serial#'s are all 6 digits. I'm thinking you have left out a "X" in your serial#. A 6 digit A prefix serial# of A137XXX would date to about 1971.

I don't think that s/n can be found in 4th edition. It's too new. Fortunately I have my own list. Your gun would have shipped from Springfield, Mass. in.....

Late January - early February 2016.

My best friend died last December, and left me holding the bag as his executor. The only positive is the bag has a boat load of guns, and two I have found are S&W 686s, no dash, no mod, and I'm curious as to their "born on" dates. He also left me a M29, S.N. 1816883 (not verified - haven't been able to access it in one of the safes yet); if I need to post it on the pre-1980 forum I will do that - just thought I'd ask. The two 686's are:
ACL3739 4"
AJV8084 6"
The 4" is an ex-Cali sheriff's office gun (and so marked); the 6" is pristine, barely fired at all, and spotless. Once I get to that safe, there were likely be more finds. All things considered, I'd rather have him hanging out with me.

Tell your friends you care for them - I did, and I am glad...

The 4-inch would of shipped in....
July - December 1983. (Most likely later in the year).
The 6-inch left Springfield in...
February of 1986.
The 4-inch is intrinsically more valuable, but condition sets it back a bit, I would estimate it's value in the $500 to $650 range. The 6-inch in pristine condition $550 to $700. Lack of factory boxes detracts $25 to $50.

Hi Gent,

You guys are fantastic. Thank you for all the info you provide and keep the thread going for the rest of us.

I have 2 items today:

Won a 65-3 a few weeks ago.
4in, square butt, pretty good condition overall.
Ser: AUA21XX

Then I have a new to me S&W 910 pistol.
Ser: VJH02XX

Wondering if you can date both for me.
Thanks again guys.

Good evening good does

I need your assistance for the 2nd time. Today I traded my model 69 for a pre lock 66. I decided having pieces of history was more important than firepower. The serial number on my 66 no dash is

2K8273 2

Can you give me some insight?

Default Mountain Gun on the Barrel.

Wondering if you can help me out?
Inquiring about the date and approximate price.

Thank you so much for what you do.

Got a lead on a Smith & Wesson Model 57-5
.41 Magnum Mountain Gun, 4" barrel.
It is blued and has the awesome side plate lock.
It is supposedly only factory fired, new in the box.
Has some ugly wood finger groove grips on it.
SKU 161300.
Serial #appears to be CJH8406.

Thank you.

It would of most likely shipped in....

July - August of 2005.

It would trade hands in the $650 to $900 range, if in like new condition with box. Deduct $25 - $50 for each drop in condition and missing item.

Since, just myself and one other member routinely read this thread, two set of eyes, you might want to ask your value question in the main forum where perhaps 100 members will see it.

Welcome to the Forum,
We can nail down the year, but you will have to do some detective work. Impossible to tell what Model it is without more information. Ask the seller to open the cylinder and read the Model# stamped on the frame under the arm (yoke) that holds the cylinder.

The model number will be on the frame beneath where the barrel comes thru the frame. We call that spot the "yoke cutout". The yoke is the thing that swings out when you open the action and the cylinder spins on. (On a Colt it's call a "crane").

Ignore any markings or symbols on the yoke itself.

The model number will probably be a letter "M" followed by a number, a dash symbol, and another number. It would be helpfull to get both numbers. The first number is the model and the second number is the engineering revision.

Does it have any markings that might indicate a LEO background? That's the easiest way to tell. Otherwise, for $50 you can get a historical letter from S&W that might, I'll stress, might, tell you it shipped to a LEO.

I can say it is indicative of the type of revolver that was popular with LEO's in that era and thousands were sold for that purpose, though many would of opted for a stainless steel gun, like a Model 65, due to it's higher level of durability.

Default Model 25-5

Hi, I just purchased a Smith and Wesson Model 25-5 serial number N680158. I am curious to know approximately when it was manufactured and would greatly appreciate any help. I know the previous owner owned the gun for 30 years and stated he bought it used.

Hello! Just picked up a Model 13 - 4 three inch in the box. But I'm getting the feeling that the box is not the original one. My serial number is BUH7180. I have the SCSW 4th Edition here and the serial number isnt even listed in it. The tag that was suppose to have come on the box was torn off and inside the box. It says 13 - 3 on it with yet another serial number on it.

September 1995 - February 1996.

It's a normal s/n. The Standard Catalog just lists a few of the thousands of possible prefixes. You're suppose to extrapolate.

Product code for a standard 3-inch M13-4 was 100304.

Thanks for the info. The guy I got it from is trying to tell me that it is from 1984. Is it possible that it sat for 10 or 11 years before it was shipped ?

Not trying to bud in here, the Kernel IS the master of serial#'s. The 17D serial# prefix dates to 1982-83.
