That must be a pretty new gun. The SCSW hardly even shows any serials starting with a "D" prefix. Do you have the box? If so, take a picture of the label and post it here and I should be able to decipher the shipping date.

Mudd,

I made a snafu and not sure if it can be corrected, but do you mind deleting your quote of my comment displaying my serial number? Was reading where this is bad practice.

No problem, SvartiBlack. I just replaced the numbers in your serial with x's. The 3 letter combo in the front of the serial is fine to post as it could be any one of 9999 guns that have a DJF serial number.

As for myself, I don't take any giant pains to obscure the serial number in pictures, but generally don't post all the serial in a post.

Thanks for understanding. Not sure anything would happen, but after talking with a good buddy of mine he said it is not standard practice to post a S/N. I will get you a photo of my case in a bit.

Thanks for your help

Muddocktor,
Thanks for the information. Does this mean the 3rd edition of the SCSW should have the information on the CJAXXXX ?

No, the 3rd Edition doesn't have nearly as much serial number information on the newer guns as the 4th Edition since the 3rd Edition has been out for several years. I think that the authors of it rely on people reporting the serials and years of shipping and don't actually get the information from S&W. So, in the case of the CJA serial numbers, nobody has reported to them a date of shipping, which you can get off the label on the box the gun comes in.

Be sure to blur out the last 4 digits of your serial number on the box before posting it.

Well I have a question regarding the last of the N serial #'s. I recently turned a friend that is newer to firearms onto the beauty of 4" N frames. I dabble with .357 and .44, but the grand old .45 colt has no equal in my world. After shooting several of mine on multiple occasions, the hunt was on. I explained the variations and improvements along the way.

I am a huge fan of the 25-9 and consider it the bomb, and I have educated my friend on the oversized chambers, etc. So MY baseline is a 25-5 non-pinned. After getting out my main workhorse 25-5 that is non-pinned, I noticed the serial is N 939xxx. Looking at my first edition catalog, it says 1983 ended in the 932xxx range and then 3 letter prefix which is correct on my 25-7 and 25-9 stable. So trying to date this vintage for my friend put me on a quest to find out the ship date. Does anyone know if the newer 4th edition shows a higher range for N serial prefixes?

Thanks for any insight, Ispy12.

Default 627 pc question

Years ago I had a 627 pc I bought new. It had a black frame with the slab sides, the unfluted cylinder, the trigger, hammer and release all stainless. I sold it, not realizing how limited they would be. I have the opportunity to get one on an auction but have questions. The one I bought had fiber optic front sights and grips that looked alot like Jerry Mucilek grips without the JM. The one up for auction has a gold bead front sight and Ahrends grips. I want to make sure of what I am bidding on . Any help would be appreciated. The seller, a store, has pointed out that approximately 200 were made. The serial number is CMC0068. Thank you in advance.

For Post 4811,

There were several Mod. 627 Performance Center references in my 4th Ed. Standard Catalog of S&W. Precise descriptions and serial numbers were usually not mentioned together. I saw no specific "CMC" prefix and couldn't associate the prefix with a year.

Even the 627 descriptions were vague and might only mention "unfluted" or "fluted"; "two-tone" or no mention; and often no barrel length.

In my SCSW book, I saw no specific reference to an "ABE" prefix, but other 3 letter prefixes starting with "AB_" were from 1982 to 1984, with the bulk of those "AB_" prefixes showing as made in 1983.

Good morning, the ALW numbers are from 1985. Other than a $100 letter from the S&W Historical Association, that's as close as we can get. Happy New Year and enjoy your 649! I have one and it's my "retirement commemorative." One of the more unique and useful small revolvers out there.

According to my 4th edition, yours could be anywhere in the 1982-1986 time frame. They say the highest "N" serial number was in the N97xxxx range and was shipped in the 1986 time frame. Taking a wild guess, I would say yours shipped around 1983-1984, but that is just a guess.

4th edition doesn't list serials with the ABE prefix, but shows ABK and ABL for 1982. So just guessing I would say that yours shipped in that time frame.

That's another prefix not specifically shown in the 4th edition, but other prefixes starting with "BB" shipped in the 1988-1989 time frame. BTW, your serial should be BBO3096 and not BB03096. The first 3 digits of the new serials are letters, not numbers.

In the 4th SCSW, they show dates of 1986-1987 for serials with the prefix "AU". And since yours is a no dash 586, the latest it could be would be roughly 1986, as the 4th SCSW shows the 586-1 starting in 1986. So I would hazard yours came out in 1986, right before the -1 guns started shipping. The "M" below the serial number tells us that your gun was shipped back to S&W for the modified hammer nose and bushing change to cure a lockup problem some of the early guns had with some ammo with soft primers.

The 4th edition doesn't show the BHC serial prefix, but does show some near to that in the year 1991. So I am guessing that your gun shipped some time in 1991. And to also back up this guess, I have a model 27-5 with a BFM serial prefix and the box shows a ship date of October 25, 1990 for it. Hope this helps you out.
