For the exact day look on the box label for a number like: 112216. The middle two are the day.

You are going to have to supply some more information and some pictures if you want a value assessment. It's like saying I have a blue chevrolet. What model is it and how much is it worth?

Really, have a look at this link and fill in some blanks. Post a couple of pic's, it will help with both of your questions.

Welcome to the Forum,
The number you posted (41681) is NOT the serial#.
You will find the serial# on the bottom of the grip frame-see attached pic. My pic isn't the greatest, but you should get the idea of where to find the proper serial#.

The gun is a "no dash ". The initial offering.

The markings on the yoke don't really mean anything. They were used at the factory to track parts during assembly.

If you would like a discussion on your M586 start a thread and post some pictures in the main forum.

It would of most likely left the factory in.....

October - December 1987.

If it had a Heavy Barrel it would be a -8; a Standard Barrel a -7. They were made simultaneously.

Do you have the factory box?

Default Thanks

It's got a heavy barrel so, 10-8.

No box, stock wood magna grips (round butt style).

It's beyond well-worn, but lockup is good and the trigger is smooth. Purchased as a trade-in from SOG.

I was born in 1987, so it's neat it is likely as old as I am. I'll be mailing my letter order this week.

Thanks.

If it was issued to an agency, I'd like to know.

I see you point though, $75 is $75.

Rarely were firearms shipped directly to a Police Dept. They were typically ordered through a distributor and shipped to the distributor. I hope you are lucky though.

If never seen a DEB s/n prefix or any s/n beginning with DE. Possibly because it was made just a few weeks or months ago. Or you could be reading it wrong.

You may have to take off the grips and read the s/n off the bottom of the grip frame. It is inscribed very clearly and larger there.

Do you have the original factory box or case?

What is the gun's "dash number". (Appears after the model number on the yoke cutout).

I do have the original factory box. It is 686-6. I just picked it up last week but I wanted to know when it was made and exactly where it's been.

Also if it was born as a Deluxe with the wood grips or if they were put on afterwards.

On the label there should be a 6-digit number call the "sku" or perhaps the "product code", it begins with "16" or "17". What is that number?

There will also be a second 6-digit number under no apparent heading, by itself. It will look something like: 032517 or 123016. Something like that. What is that number?

So the bottom of the grip also says DEB2988.

The sku number is 150712

The other number is 042617 and then there is a number hand written on the box

What do all these numbers mean?

Just as I suspected it's a brand new s/n prefix. S&W was using "DDx" just a few months ago, and has now jumped ahead to "DEx" prefixes. Your gun left the factory on.....

April 26, 2017.

I didn't anticipate it might have a "15" product code. That's not unusual, it just means it's not a standard catalog item. Probably something a big distributor ordered a bunch of to get a special price. I've been seeing them since at least 2009.

They call it the "Deluxe", I guess because it has fancier wood laminate grips. Otherwise, it's a standard production 6-inch Model 686-6 Plus. Buds has them for $727 shipped.

Wow thanks for the information! Do you think it's worth getting a letter of authenticity for $50 to keep with my firearm and eventually pass it down?

You want to spend $75 on a letter to "authenticate" a revolver that's not even one month old? A gun you bought new and have the box for.

I would say "No", because it does not add $75 in value to the gun.

There's really nothing to learn. S&W assembled it. They put it on a truck that day or the next. It went to your local distributor. He, or a local gun store in his distribution chain put it out on a shelf. A few days later you bought it. What else is there?

A letter couldn't tell you anything you don't already know.

Default 686-3 SN BBL46xx

S&W 686-3 SN: BBL4628
There is no BBL in the Stnd Cat. Does it go alphabetically?
BBF is Jul 1988
BBT is Aug 1988
Does this mean mine was Jul 1988?

Most likely November or December.

Serial numbers normally appear in an advancing alphabetical and chronological manner. S&W did mix it up some. Probably so a competitor could not know their production numbers and capabilities simply by studying s/n's.

Hi guys and gals. Looking for some help here. I am currently looking into purchasing a 686, 6" barrel, no dash. But the finish is nickel. I'm not sure if it's a factory finish or aftermarket. If it's factory I'll probably jump on it, if not the I'm not really interested. The serial # is AAF6 996.

Welcome to the Forum,
The model 686 is made from stainless steel. The one you are looking at was likely polished by a previous owner to a nickel like appearance. The Kernel will come by to date the serial# but it's an early one from the early 80's.

Assuming you have the factory box, on the label look for a 6-digit number, something like: 030917.

What is that number?

As 824tsv says, there's no such thing as a nickel M686.

It is possible for a nickel M586. The M586 is the carbon steel version of the M686 (and normally a traditional blue).

The second number is the precise ship date......

February 8, 2017

The first number (sku) is traditionally called the "product code", and is unique to that specific model and variation. Performance Center guns always start with a 17.

Your revolver left the factory in Springfield, Mass, most likely in....
June or July of 2003.
A very late date for a S&W revolver to NOT have the ILS - the integral locking mechanism. Likely because it was shipped overseas to the EU, where I assume you reside. Perhaps to use up old frames that could no longer be sold in the USA.

The guns was called the 627 Target Champion. The product code was 148327, which is a unique identifier of this specific model and variation.

S&W's distributor/importer Wischo GmbH in Erlangen, Germany (now called WAIMEX), had a quantity of 501 made on a special order.

Two interesting features, rarely or never seen on Smiths sold in the States, are the exquisite German NILL grips, and the highly precise Italian LPD rear target sight.

When such EU Export Smiths find their way back to the States they will typically sell in the $1,000 to $2,000 range.

Instead of "any date", would an approximate one be okay? It most likely shipped in......
December 1990 - January 1991.

Thank you! I bought it from a Danish dealer and imported it to Sweden.
I find it interesting that the product code 148327 says 5" and 627-2.
Mine is 6" and stamped 627-3... Seems like i got my hands on a genuine oddballFor new members looking for date of manufacture info (how to find your serial number)

I don't think your gun is an "oddball". There are another 501 6-inch -3's just like it. What's strange is S&W recycling the product code with your gun and the 5-inch -2 that was made in 1998. The two guns are very different variations. I've seen Smith do it before, reuse product codes on limited production guns that are somewhat similar. It's confusing, but not very common.
