Local has a slightly used 629 with 8 3/8 barrel in wooden box for sale. Have not owned a 629 in many years. Serial number is N882933 which I estimate makes it an early 1980s gun. Owner has not identified the model but I am guessing it is a 629-2 which I recall is the model when S&W no longer pinned the barrel and stopped counter-boring the cylinders.
All help in identifying the year of production and thoughts on the -2 model, if that serial number confirms that is the model number , would be appreciated.

That serial number likely shipped in 1982 or 1983. Based on that ship date it should be a 629-1. That engineering change did eliminate the pinned barrel and recessed cylinders. There was also a slight change in the cylinder length.

FWIW, I have a 629-1 that is a great shooter. This segment of 629s may be slightly under appreciated, as it is after the P&R guns but before the Endurance Package. I enjoy shooting my -1 with mid-range target loads and would not part with it.

Thanks. Your info is consistent with my earlier estimates but the seller now tells me the gun is marked 629 with no dashes which I do not understand considering the serial number.
I will have to meet with him and examine the gun in person.

That is possible, as the -1 change occurred in 1982. There are no hard breaks in production, old frames and parts get used up over months time before a new change is completely implemented. It will be real easy to sort out when you see the gun.
