Model 37 Airweight Chiefs Special
I picked up this up with the box and papers for ~$250. I should have put the original grips on, maybe later . Circa 1982. I originally posted a photo in the P&R thread, didn't realize at the time that was the wrong thread for this gun.

Opaul,
I have its mate from about 1980, SN J900XXX. Mine is a Square Butt model. I took off the original grips and replaced them with Pachmayr Presentation Grips just like you show in your photo. I don’t have big hands but the factory grips were just too small for me and I kept getting too much finger on the trigger.
The Model 37 Airweight Chief is not my favorite S&W revolver, but it is one that I carry often. It is lightweight and it works.

I'll put some wood on and post another photo. I picked the holster up at a gun show a couple of months ago, used but looks just right with the gun.

Good deal and I have a newer model like it. I carried it last night in my parka and it felt like it wasn't even there. Yes I checked a time or two by feel to make sure it was still there.
I carry it twice as much as a similar Model 36 just because of the light weight.

If you're going to carry it, the grips that are on it now beat the factory grips by a long way. If you bought it mostly to admire, then the wood grips would be best. Either way, the price you paid would have been a good deal in 1993. In other words, great deal!

That's a real good deal! Last summer I paid a little more for one made in the late 1980's. Unfortunately it developed the infamous ''crack" a few months later. A call to S&W resulted in them emailing a prepaid shipping label with instructions on how to proceed. Turned out that it was not repairable and they replaced it with a new 637. The only cost to me was the FFL transfer fee when I picked it up at my LGS. I'll miss the old 37 but I can't complain about the service and the new 637 is rated for +P!

Over the last 30-years I’ve shot my Airweght probably more than most others do and have had no problems with it. It is showing a lot of holster wear but it is still tight and it works.
I stopped into a gun shop a couple months ago and saw two old-but-mint Airweights, one round and one square butt. The clerks were all busy so I never got any details, but they were asking $600 for each. Here in California, for an old-but-mint gun they’ll probably get it or close to it.
You got a good deal. Enjoy it.

I love mine!
I bought this 1968 M37 no dash about a year ago for 200 bucks and an old Raven .25 auto. I even threw in a handful of .25 ammo . This little gun has been carried since the day I bought it. It isn't real pretty, but it shoots great, and feels tight. the grips are rough but numbered to the gun and I personally like the way they feel over the different types of rubber or plastic grips. I did have a set of perfect looking magnas like the originals but they just didn't match the condition of the finish on the gun. know what I mean?
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine. It disappears in the inside pocket of my Carhart and doesn't print.
Peace,
gordon
