696 Goodness
I decided the factory grips had to go so I put on a pair of Ahrends Round Butt Smooth Tactical grips. SWEET!!! I really like these w/o the finger grooves!! Changes the entire handling dynamics!!

I have Eagle Secret Service stocks on mine. I filed the grooves off. Doesn't look real formal, but feels good.
Ain't those 696s cool guns?

The 696 and the 13/65, in three-inch barrels, are just about the best idea S&W ever had. Glad I've got mine.

you had a very good idea. my wife's 696 wears Ahrends Retro Bananas which are nearly the same as the Tactical smooth, and the gun is incredibly handy and easy to control.

I used to put talcom powder on the slippery rubber grips. But I changed the rubber ones for these rosewood. I bought them direct from S&W. I didn't know if I would like them, round butt, and slight finger grooves. Firing one or two rounds don't tell you too much. So last weekend I shot a 100 reloads and guess what.? I love them. I had my model 29 with Hoque square stocks to compare them. Because of the mild loads, the shots with the new round butt worked better than I thought they would. Normally I prefer sq. I guess it has to to so with the size and weight of the 696. I hope you like your new grips, it sounds like you do. :-)

Back when they first came out, I stumbled on one in the LGS. Of course I bought it for some outrageous sum, probably $400. I loved everything about it but the goodyear grips. They were both ugly and awful. But a quick look in my woodpile revealed a couple of nice sets of diamond round butt magnas. It was easy, I tried a set on and they worked really good.
Of course it confuses folks when they see it. Just a little sanding and some tru-oil makes it look like they came on it. 696s are great guns, but they pretty much ruined them with junk like the lock. The 396s are worthy partners, too. Maybe I should put a pair of the same diamond magnas on one of them just to see how it looks and handles!
