Default given a revolver..**pics and history added**

I'm new here, but I guess I might as well jump in with both feet.

There is a long and involved story, but the short version is that after 17 years of marriage, I met my "real" my Father-in-law. For Christmas he gave out several weapons to my sons, and to me he gifted a S&W 586 4".

The serial number is AAH 36XX

This weapon belonged to a friend of my FIL, a deputy sheriff who was killed in the line of duty. This was one of his duty handguns. He told me that in the time (over 20 years) he has had it, he has never fired it. He has only taken it out to clean it. It has after market large grips on it, because as he explained "he had big hands".

He thought I would enjoy it, since I am also in Law Enforcement.

I have lots of questions, like when was it made. I know early 80's but I wonder when. I would like to know about getting some other grips. I have some that fit a round butt S&W that look really good, but of course they don't fit this one.

I need to know how to, or rather how not to do a deep cleaning. It has no rust and what I would call 95% blue with some honest holster wear around the muzzle and forward edge of the cylinder. But it needs a good full cleaning, and maybe a wax job.

I thought a good clean and waxing, along with some nice grips would really make it nice.

I have thought about having it lettered, mainly because the deputy was an armorer. I wonder if it is possible the weapon was sold directly to the deputy or his department.

I can post pics if they are wanted or needed, but I figured everyone here knew what a 586 looked like.

I look forward to your help, suggestions and replys.

Mr Fixit

Welcome to the Forum.
Your revolver was made in 1982.
The grips (or "Stocks" as S&W calls them) are, as you've surmised, Square Butt. Any stocks from a K or L-Frame Square Butt should fit it as they are the same. There are a multitude of aftermarket ones in either wood or synthetic available.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Kim Ahrends makes some nice S&W revolver grips at a decent price. I just ordered a pair of finger grove Cocobolo grips for my 3" M686 Plus. If you go to his site under revolvers and click on "Eye Candy", you will see a 4" 586-5 with Square butt finger grove Osage Orange wood. Very nice!

Looks like it was made in 1982 and some of the early ones had the pinned barrel.

Grips are easy and plentiful, any K or L frame square butt grips will fit, you have to decide what you want, Pachmayer rubbers, Stag, Buffalo or Exotic wood. Keep the originals with the gun.

Cleaning a revolver is pretty straight forward, the only issue could be dried up crusty oils that may have formed inside the works over the last 30 years. There are two ways to approach this the first and simplest way is to remove the grips and soak the gun your favorite bore cleaner overnight or hose it out with one of those foaming gun cleaners then blow out the excess with compressed air oil and go. The other way is to remove the side-plate (ask how before you start), then disassemble the innards and clean, this way is not recommended for someone who is not mechanically inclined and there are a couple of tricks, but if you can tear down an engine then a S&W revolver should be a breeze.

Getting a letter is never a bad thing, it may or may not give you the information you seek but it will give you information.

If you don't show pictures then it never happened.

That gun has some stories to tell...cherish it and shoot it. Congrats on your acquisition, and welcome to the forum.

The factory letter will likely show it was shipped to a distributor, or less likely a specific dealer. The 586/686 series was one of the first introduced with the unpinned barrel - as far as I know there is no pinned 586. Enjoy!

I like to consider my self mechanically inclined. I I have built and rebuilt several AR and FAL rifles. I've built a custom Mauser (from a bare action) for my son, and I have built a couple of 1911's from parts. Been a while but I've rebuilt several small engines, does that count? So before I start, I'm officially asking "How?"

I'll post some pics later today I hope. the good camera is at work, but I'll do what I can.

Thanks

FAQ's

Any tools you need can be made at home easily enough, I made a rebound slide tool from an old screwdriver, and use a heavy piece of rubber in a vise to loosen the cylinder from the extractor rod.

The most and first critical move is knowing how to remove the sideplate. After removing the screws, rap the grip frame with a wood mallet, back of a screwdriver, and the side plate will vibrate up to be removed with your fingers. Never pry on one. Another item is if you remove the hand from the trigger, to realize that it is spring loaded and to replace the spring properly so the hand will rotate theycylinder. More detailed instructions can be found in other threads.

Here are some photos:

Can anyone help with some info on the knife too?

And you can see the only little spots of rust on the side plate.

Along with the stocks on the weapon, there were some rubber ones, and these:

I really like the way these look, unfortunately they are for a round butt. I would love to find some with the finger grips like these with this same type figure and color.

There are factory square butt Combat stocks with finger grooves, which are wider at the bottom. You may to post in the Wanted to Buy (trade) section here.

That is a good looking revolver, it appears to have good honest wear with a couple of freckles, I don't see any signs abuse. It should be a dandy shooter/woods gun.

As for the stocks I'm sure you can find someone here who would trade some sq butt Combats for your rd butt Combat stocks. Just post a thread in our classifieds section.

As for the knife, it looks like one of the nice old US made S&Ws, I believe they go for around a $100, but don't quote me on that. Though I'm no expert, we do have them here on the forum, and a new knife thread is always welcome.

mr fix it, Welcome to the forum! Nice gun and background on it! The grips that you want are out there somewhere. Sometimes it takes lots of looking. Eagle Grips have some nice ones also. I have 4 nice sets off of ebay. If you ever want to sell those k rounds pictured, let me know! Enjoy your gun! Bob

I have the complete history of the weapon. As I said, it was given to me by my Father-in-law who was good friends with the deputy.

I will try to redact some of the personal information (both my own and the fallen Deputy) and post it here. I wonder what some of the opinions here would be of it.

I received this revolver as a gift over Christmas from my Father-in-law. He also gave the boys several rifles that I did not expect. Heck, I never expected to be given a weapon at all. With so much going on, I kind of forgot what he told me about the weapon. A few days later, I emailed him asking for information about the weapon. He emailed me a pdf. file with the following information. Out of respect for the officers family, I have replaced the fallen officers name with "My friend", feeling that was appropriate. Included in the pdf. were copies of the Officers business card, his photo, and a newspaper article about his death.
The following was written to me from my F-I-L;

This revolver was purchased by "My friend" sometime in 1982. "My friend" was a Deputy Sheriff and Armorer in XXX County, Texas. He had “tuned” this pistol and was using it as one of his duty weapons.

"My friend" was shot with his own gun after being hit in the head with a full can of beer while investigating a domestic disturbance, 1986 in XXX. His attacker was later found “Not Guilty” by a jury in XXX Texas where the trial had been moved on a change of venue.

"My friend" died almost six months after being shot due to complications from his injury

"My friend" and I had been Friends and Hunting Partners for years. I served as a Pall Bearer (the only non-Law Enforcement) at his funeral. The funeral was held at XXX, Texas where he had served as Assistant Chief of Police for several years before moving to XXX County. After the funeral, the Sheriff & "My friends" Dad gave me his badge, shoulder patch and duty weapon, the one he was shot with. I received the pistol after the trial was held.

When the “L” frames first came out as a medium sized pistol, the grips were from the smaller “K” frame. "My friend" had bigger hands, like mine and changed the grips out for a “N” frame set (over-sized).
He had “tuned” the weapon for ease of operation and was still “tinkering” on it when he was shot.
The hunting season before he was shot (fall 1985), while we were hunting close to Eldorado, Texas, he shot a 8 point buck with this weapon using 158 grain semi-wad cutter. One shot, through the heart and the deer dropped on the spot.
In the 25 or so years since I have had this gun, except to clean it, I have never taken it out of the safe.
When he died, I was given his duty pistol, a Marlin .357 Magnum Lever Action Rifle he used as a “door gun” on his patrol car (passed on to Grandson #1) and a Smith and Wesson “Survival” knife (passed on to Grandson #2). These and the Pistol (passed on to Son-in Law Mr Fixit) were given out on December 26, 2011 as Christmas gifts.

These were given with the understanding they should be passed on in the family and not traded, sold or given away.
I hope they are used for shooting and hunting and enjoyed as much as "My friend" and I did.

For stocks Google Jim Badger Custom Grips. I like his finger groove grips better than any non-full-custom units out there.

Amazing bit of history on that ol 586 Mr Fixit! Thanks to you (and your FIL) for sharing it. Many S&W guys may disagree with me, and I too love 19s and 27s, but to me the 586 one of the coolest and best overall 357 mags that S&W ever made. I'm glad to see that ol 586 has a good home...enjoy it!

Mrfixit, If you like Hogue grips they have a auction site that sells cosmetic 2nds for quite a price reduction from their premiums. I've gotten several from them and I can't see any deficiencies. Here is the site and right now they have 5 available HogueAuction.com That is a very nice 586 and a sad and touching story.

And he answers the phone. "Jim Badger, can I help you?". It's really refreshing.
The finger-groove combats you have there will fetch $100ish here on the forum, and square butt grips are pretty much everywhere.
It's a fine revolver, and it's in nice enough shape. The knife is cool, in the style of the Randall combat knives of that era.
Now go SHOOT the thing.

I will keep the grips that are on it, but I will get some more for the gun to wear. I've got an idea for some grips that I think would look good, but it would involve making new grips and I'm not sure I'm up to that. One day the gun will go to my son that got his .357 Marlin "door gun", they will make a good match again.

I also was given his S&W handcuffs, keys, 2 speed loaders and just a bit of nylon gear. I'm not sure if the nylon gear was his duty stuff or just extra, but the cuffs, and speed loaders were in nylon duty gear, and there was a nylon holster for the gun, as well as a nylon flashlight ring. So, I'm making the assumption that it was his duty gear.

I wonder, any of you guys that were in LE in the early 80's know about nylon duty gear at that time?

Mr Fixit

Thanks for sharing the story. If you haven't already, it'd be worth looking up the deputy on the Officer Down Memorial Page and keeping a copy of his entry.

Mr Fixit
I pulled the pin in '88 and it was just starting to show up in our area then, but I wouldn't be surprised if a department armorer and "gun guy" wouldn't have managed to get some for testing and evaluation.
