I deer hunt with my 460 it has the 8 3/8 barrel, compensated. Recoil with the 240 jhp compares to just a little heavier than my 629 8 inch 44; compensator tones it down recoil wise.. but ya better own a good set of muffs if you want to hear tomorrow, very good caliber, 454 casull shoots like a 357, very tame

THE STEE, My feelings about recoil differ a bit from yours. I run 265 grain hard cast, maxed-out in my 8 3/8” 629, compared to 400 grain hard cast from the 460. The 460 may have a bit more movement during recoil, but the 629 is much more “uncomfortable” to shoot. I’ve gone through 3 or 4 different grips on the 629....and just can’t make it comfortable to shoot with heavy loads ! memtb

Anything bullet over 350 grains offers no additional value out of 460. I use a 260 CPS by North Fork Technologies and it has no issues with penetration. I shoot an 800 lb grizzly through the shoulders, breaking both, with a clean exit.
I used 325 grain HC and jacketed bullets on bison also with complete penetration.
Use a reasonable bullet weight and you won't have as much of an issue.

ruggyh, I don’ find the recoil from the 460 to be unpleasant....especially compared to my 629. In fact, when I first got it, my wife thought that it was “pretty mild” recoil, when using the factory Hornady 200’s (accumulating brass).
I prefer heavy bullets ( even use a “standard” bullet weight in my rifles using Barnes mono bullets) and technically speaking....a 400 grain, 45 caliber bullet, is “not” heavy for caliber. As my shots on game will be under 150 yards, trajectory (hold over), is a non-issue. I use the same bullet for “all” of my big game hunting, so learning/remembering bullet drop at various ranges is much simplified! I want a pass-thru on any game I hunt....from any angle! memtb

Can't believe how disappointing it is to have not moved on with other production parts yet but should have known after 10 years waiting starting by making barrels it was too good to be true.
Manufacturers telling us they want our work in their hasnt even guaranteed us a start on something like the receiver let alone finishing one.
Then manufacturers went to SHOT, a lot of people brought the flu back home to their work and decreased our opportunity to get work done even more. Very frustrating and something I should have counted on really when looking at a prototype/ first run period. So this weeks goal is to clear up if I am siting on my hands OR actually getting parts run and getting a gun out the door so I can do some promotion for Wannenmacher show.
Trying to manage things from another country is likely half the issue as well easy to bump work of people who arent in your face or got a delivery contract with you yet because no-one knows costs. The frustration....
Yet hopefully well before Wannenmacher which should be within a month to start promotional work.

I have been posting about making a firearm to partner with people 460 & 500 SW pistols and there have been frustrating delays which I thought pointing out was obvious.
I had previously posted the success of the making of the 500 barrels and that the rest of manufacturing would soon follow but not to be, there has been untenable delays in making other parts to produce that firearm overall.
I expressed that.

If I understand your post, there is a company in Cody, Wyoming that builds custom lever action rifles for both the 460 and the 500. Big Horn Armory.....beautiful, quality, and expensive! memtb

Yes that is correct and I hope to deliver a product cheaper than that and yet still high quality in the pump format so its a little faster than the lever format (having seen the Big Horn may be done to pretty tight tolerances as they seem a little sticky new, good that it will live longer but a little annoying at first). Og course it avoids the messing around required for semi auto that dont have the guarantee of performance you can expect from quality manual rifles is certain weather conditions or not cleaning etc etc
Not two hours after I made the post of my frustrations I got another promise of a date etc but I'll just leave that all cool down or hang until I actually have the working gun now so I don't have this "Is it done yet" issue for me and others. I am however really looking forward to putting a partner rifle and even some partner bullets out there that people can use in both their primary and sidearm. I would be very happy to see that.

Almost bought the PC460XVR 3.5” but decided on the PC S&W500 (3.5”), and I have no regrets though I haven’t even fired a 460

1. I do not own either, but have shot both.
2. Both are fun to shoot.
3. Both are expensive to shoot. As with a rifle, you will not likely shoot as many rounds as you would 9mm. If you do not reload/handload you may wish to think twice. The price of the gun is dwarfed by the cost of ammo.
4. It is all in what you like, as you get older your preferences may change.
5. I would be more tempted by the 460 due to the ammo choices, but the 500 is the top tree killer. Nothing living hit by a 460 is going to pop up and say that you should have used a 500. Enjoy the hell out of whatever you choose!

Primary Arms Advanced Microdot is what I have used on my S&W 500 Magnum 5”.
On my S&W 460 XVR 8 3/8” I use a Ultradot Matchdot.
Both use Weigand rails.
I have a S&W 460 XVR 4” but I don’t run an optic on it. I also have a S&W 500 Magnum 4” and S&W 500 Magnum 6.5”, also without optics.

Groo here
The 460 likes longer barrels.
The larger 500 can do the same with shorter ones.
The thing about 45+ cal bullets is the larger the bore
the more effective the round at a given energy level and the lower
the % of loss due to shorter barrels.
When you get to 475/500 size boolets, even the "Target" loads
will take deer......

I have both the 500 & 460. The 460 is scoped, used a Weigand rail and rings and Leupold VX-3 2.5X8 scope.
I have sent around 1500 rounds through the 460, probably half of those with the scope on top. It has held up fine, I have had no issues, no zero loss. All components are important, reil, rings and scope need to be up for the job.
I have about a 1000 rounds through the 500.
No scope on the 50AE Desert Eagle either, I have been thinking that a red dot may be nice on that. I have the 44 Mag barrel for it too. It is fun to shoot.
Including a pic of the "real" 50 - the rifle in the back of the pic with the 4 rifles is my Barrett M82A1 in 50 BMG. I have only shot that about 200 times. It has a Nightforce NXS scope with Barrett rings and it has held up well too.

I have 1000 through my 500 8 3/8”. Only issue I have with it is the stock Hogue Tamer grips are deteriorating. After ever cylinder I fire I have to brush the bits of rubber off my hands. Going to try some Hogue Monogrips on it.

I have a 460 7.5" Black hunter with just over 17000 rounds on it, and 3 other 460s with over 6000 rounds each.
I really don't shoot that much comparatively 500 but one of my 7.5" has 5000+ rounds and one of my JR 5" just under 4000 rounds.
My reloading logs shows just over 76000 460 reloaded.
They do need some care along the way, but with anything high performance it comes with the territory.

I've owned several 500s over the years, but only recently bought a 460V which S&W calls a 5", but it's actually a 4" if you don't count the Compensator as barrel. Anyway I mainly shoot handloads in my 460, and the vast selection of bullets of various shapes, and weights, makes the 460 in my opinion a more versatile revolver. If you handload, there is no reason to fire other cartridges than 460 cased ammo, but it's nice to know that the 460 will chamber and fire 45 Schofield, 45 Colt, and 454 Casull in addition. I use Starline cases and have had great success with that brass.
