Hi Guys,

Could I please have your input on this possible deal. I have been out of the gun scene for 12 or 13 years and don't have a clue for the values.

And, I'm a newbie with revolvers. I want a nice 6" M17 for the range and never shoot my Sig 226 purchased new by me 21 years ago. The Sig is in excellent condition. Maybe 2000 rounds. Never carried, always well cared for.

So, here's the possible deal....straight up trade:
His 17-3 that he purchased from "old-time target shooter who gave it up because he couldn't see the sights anymore." He does not know how many rounds, etc.

Would that be a fair deal? If you guys give the thumbs up I can meet him at the range on Sunday and look it over / test it out.

I don't need to sell the Sig. I just don't think I'll be shooting it much anymore. A HK P7M8 became my favorite 9mm back in 2000. So, I don't see the point of keeping the Sig even though I had a lot of great memories with it...

I would think it's a fair deal to both parties with you getting a slight edge on the up side. I say that because Model 17 prices have increased quite a bit in the past two years and they go for between $600 and $700. I bought a Michigan Sate Police P226 two years ago for $500 and it was in excellent condition.

I sold my 17-3 for $70 more than my P226 last year. They were both in 98% condition, so yes, I think you are getting a good deal. If you use the revolver and the P226 just sits, so much the better.

A guy last week said he wanted a 17-3 for his wife, I said it sounds like a fair trade to me.

22's seem to be a hot item now. For that model and year of manufacture, I'd make the trade.

Sounds like a good trade. I agree with the comments. For some reason Sigs don't command the prices used that smith 22's do. I have a 226 I bought used in 94 for around 400. I doubt it would bring much more now. I have a model 18 I bought in 1986 for 220 new. I guess it is around 600 now.

It shipped in 1977. Since you also have a P7M8 you have the 9 mm angle covered, and I agree it is a good trade dollar-wise. (Not to mention you posted on the S & W Forum ). Hope this is helpful.

My first issued semi-auto was one of these. I'd keep it for life at this point. Figure out another way to get the revolver.

I kind of agree. I wish I still had my 686 I bought new in 1988. Or the Glock 19 and model 36 I bought new in 1991.

Once we get rid of these guns, they're probably gone forever. Along with any sentimental or historical value we had with them.

Yea, I hear ya. That's the risk in getting rid of something. But, that P7M8 is so amazing...the Sig has fallen out of favor. I would like an older Sig 220 though...but I'm on a revolver kick.

Thanks for the date info of the M17. Was Smith and Wesson quality strong back in the mid/late 1970's?

22 revolvers are so much fun, heck 22 anything are a joy to shoot and cheap ammo to boot! If the sig were your only centerfire handgun, I might pause for a moment: always good to have a "real" gun handy. Otherwise the 17 will be a lot of fun, so go have a ball.

I actually had one of the original P7 squeeze cockers when they first hit here. I traded it in for cash and a Sig P230.

I think you are getting a good deal both ways. Wish I was a man of the wallet and would just buy your P226....Most accurate 9MM I ever owned.......

Your Sig is one of the best combat/SD weapons ever made. Have it's little brother, a 228 that I use for IPSC matches and it has NEVER bobbled in what has to be way over 20K rounds. Did a 3k rd torture test on it and it wouldn't quit shooting. Only thing I did while doing the test was brushing the rails every 1k rounds.

The 17 is one of the best .22 caliber revolvers ever made and extremely accurate. The new 617's are nice but don't have the class of a well maintained and blued 17 IMO.

If you'll be shooting the 17 and love getting enjoyment from 1/2-1.5" groups sandbagged at 25 yards all day I'd say go for it!

Since you've got you bases covered with the H&K (great weapon) I'd be all over that 17. 226's are a dime a dozen. Love mine and it will shoot as well as my model 41 target pistol. Head shots on squirells (sp) and rabbits are very doable if you're into hunting with a handgun like I am.

Go for the 17, don't look back and shoot the heck outta it!

Don't forget to let us know about your decision when you have the 17 in your mitts!

Hi Guys,

I wanted to give an update. For now, I have decided to keep my sig.

I met the seller at the range on Sunday. He was a super nice guy. He brought a lot of guns and let me shoot them all. I really liked his 9mm Kimber with bark ivory stocks. Wow, it was smooth and accurate.

The Model 17 was not sighted in and we were at the metal target range. I think the targets are set up at 50, 75 and 100 yards.

I'd say he falls into the collector category with more guns than he can shoot. He only shot the M17 once at the range after he puchased it to make sure it worked...but never took the time to sight it in.

I had trouble hitting the targets at the 50 yard mark (closest) and we found the gun was shooting way low and to one side. We made some adjustments but without paper targets we were just guessing. So, you know how it goes...hard to get the warm and fuzzies for something you can't shoot straight.

No trade. But I had a great day at the range and made a new friend. Who knows we could still do the trade at some point.

since that 17 is no good. he should sell it to you REAL CHEAP ! or tell him you need to shoot it until you get it dialed in before making a trade. this may take months or years of range sessions

id make the trade and go buy another 226 they are plentiful, pre lock nice blue 17s not as much

Paid 675$ for a 17 with 8 3/8" barrel in Dec. best shooting .22 I have ever owned, now I wish I had bought one years ago...quarter size groups at 25 yards.

nice gun range...........i'd set up a tent and live there.
