Default S&W Model 64-5 K-Frame .38 Special

I am looking at purchasing this revolver. Do you think $325 is a good price for a S&W Model 64-5 K-Frame .38sp?

Here are some pics. It is used, but looks great. It had an action job and hogue grips. I have no other details about it. I think the price is fair, but obviously want to make sure. Thanks!!

Side note - what do you think about the gun itself?

There's been a flood of model 64s as "police turn-ins" lately. They've ranged in price from $210 to $290. Condition has been fair to good and some very good. For an internet sale add shipping and transfer fees. You're in the high ballpark depending if you have to add sales tax or any other fees. If it's from your LGS the condition woud have to be very good for me to pay that price though. Try GunsAmerica.com with Robertson Trading Company as the seller to compare. Of course the touchy feely thing may be worth a premium since you know exactly what you're getting. IMHO the action job is worthless and may actually be a negative since you don't know who did it and what they did. It might feel ok but it could be butchered inside. Rubber Houge grips are as common as dirt and would consider them as the minimum only to say the gun "has" grips. I wouldn't consider them a plus or a minus.

I think $300 to $310 would be a very fair price. But, I've never been known to quibble over ten or fifteen dollars.

P.S. I don't know if the 64-5 is a transitional piece or not, but my 64-5 has the old style cylinder latch release. I have seen other 64-5 with the new cylinder latch button. I just don't know if some came that way or they were swapped out.

If it is truly pristine and has had a proper action job, I would submit that the price is fair.
I got one of the $209 64-5s. By the time I have it the way I want it, I'll have that much or more in it.

Fair price for a superb revolver. My 64-5 has a trigger that is better than my Performance Center revolvers.

Buy it, shoot it, love it! Regards 18DAI

Thanks everyone! I love the gun. It is beautiful. I did cross check as recommended above. They are a little less, but they are also DAO (which I do not want) and they are have heavier wear on them. I do believe I am going to buy it. I will post back and let you know how it goes. Thank you again!

The finish looks bead-blasted which I don't think was original. Bead- blasting, however, is fine if you like it, but I saw a 64 in a local shop that had some after market baked-on coating -- and it had that same "no shine at all" look to it as in your photos. Is the gun you are buying bead-blasted? If not and it's some coating, I would pass until I found a cop trade in -- even if it looked a little scuffed around the edges.

That gun probably was a trade-in that someone got cheap, and had it bead blasted

Places like Brinks, along with lots of Corrections agencies and security companies are getting rid of their 64's and 10's. Alot of them are later -5's and up, the one I got was a -8.

Anyone advertising them as "police trade ins" is probably just using that as general terminology, as I doubt there are any Police Agencies that are just now getting rid of 64's.

That gun looks bead blasted. Someone is trying to hide something, maybe a lot of wear not obvious to someone new to guns. Take your time and find something in better shape. That "action job" may be wear. Those grips look too new. Kind of reminds me of the movie "Used Cars" "Was this car ever a Taxi? No, that's just yellow primer".

Stan is probably right about the phrase "cop trade-in." Among my gun store buddies we use the phrase for anything traded in by corrections, private security, foreign law enforcement/military -- anything but individual trade-ins -- mostly because we are not sure where these guns come from, but they look like old cop guns (lot's of holster wear, beat exterior, but nice mechanism).

The Ohio Department of Corrections (sort of a police agency, yes?) just did exactly that. Effective October 2011, they got rid of their 10's and 64's.
Traded them to Vance's in Columbus who is the armorer for most of the outfits in Ohio. More than a thousand, I was told by the clerk.

Most are gone, including the 64-5 I got for $279. The remaining 50 or so M10's are in last week's ad for $219.

The gun is bead blasted, but that does not bother me. I actually prefer the look of it. I did confirm the action job was done by one of the top gunsmiths in the area the gun is currently located. They say it is very smooth.

Just to clarify - this gun did NOT say that it was a police trade in. Most of those that were traded in are DAO.

This gun does have a 3 day return policy, so I will have it checked thoroughly by my FFL. If it is below standard - it will go back. But it is a trusted seller so I believe it is a good gun.

I will post back and update when it arrives.

Thank you everyone for you comments. I really appreciate it. As a semi-newbie - it is comforting to know you are all here to help us a long!

GB is full of the Ohio Corrections trade-ins, it seems a lot of dealers bought bunches of them and tacked on a few bucks and are "flipping" them. If places like Vance's and SOSS are selling them for $210, I wonder what they are paying the Corrections Dept's for them

Brinks recently (a few years back) got rid of bunches of newer 64's like -7's and -8's, a lot of them 2" and 3" models.

From what I read, S&W will buy the revolvers or other handguns from security or LE agencies when the agency orders M&P pistols........and then S&W will sell the trade-ins to distributors.
