ahrends or hogues?
Gonna get some wood finger groove grips for my new 586. My hands are medium which grips would be best for me?

I have small hands and like houges, I expect that the only safe way to go is to look around and try some before you order. Hopefully more helpful posters will be along soon. Good luck.

I'd go with Ahrends but both are narrower then the S&W target grips

I have medium size hands also and both work for me. I like the finish of the Ahrends and prefer the two halves to the mono-grip.

My preference is Hogue with top finger groove only, checkered. I despise the flat front of the Ahrends, although they look really nice, they feel like a 2X4 to me (Ahrends are not available checkered either).

If your talking about "Tina" Ahrends she is the definite winner. I went to school with her and she was all kinds of hot. She is still driving the drag car she raced in high school. Never did get my hands on her but she gets my vote over the Hogue.

I find the Ahrends Retro Combat grips to be my favorites. I have medium sized hands and these grips are very comfortable; especially with the optional tung oil finish.
I have them in various woods on blued guns - Cocobolo (Model 17), Padauk (Model 14), and am expecting any day now a Goncalo Alves set of round to square conversion for my 586. The fit and finish is great. They are extremely nice folks over the phone and through e-mail; a pleasure to do business with.
I got turned on to Ahrends by the recommendations of the senior members here shortly after joining this forum last summer.

Ahrends is the way I would go, but I have friends who swear by Hogues. For me, Ahrends is the better fit and I like the finish better.

Hogues...but it would be best if you had a place to feel both sets in hand for sure.

I have both. Mostly I use Ahrends with finger grooves. All of my "range" guns have the Ahrends. I have a set of Hogue Bantams on a 315 Night Guard because I wanted it more compact and lighter. If you are shooting magnum loads on a cold day the wood can hurt more than the rubber. But I like how my hand slides easily onto the smooth wood of the Ahrends. I can get a good hold with less fidget than with rubber or grips with checkering.

I have Hogue wood combats on my 629, and they are great. Not too thick, lots of control and tames recoil wonderfully.
