Just Bought My First Gun
First post, first gun. I spent a few months researching and shooting revolvers and decided I wanted a .357 S&W 586 or 686. I spent the entire weekend at a gun show talking a guy down on a beautiful like-new and barely fired 586 (no dashes). I ended up getting out the door with the gun (and its original box) for $535. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me more about the gun. The serial number is:
ADC0389
Also, did I pay too much for this gun? From what I have gathered online the price seems fair. He was originally asking $625.

You got a good deal. It pays to do your homework doesn't it? I always recommend to people buying a first handgun, to get a S&W 686 or any of a number of fine 357 revolvers. The .357 is still king. In my book.

Great choice and welcome to the forum! I had a 586 with a 6 inch barrel and undercut front sight and still regret selling it.

Brando,
You have a great .357 in a desirable length. That price would be, maybe $100.00 high, here in TN. but maybe a similar amount low in Cali.

Nice pickup Brando. I bought a 586 right out of college and it is my favorite wheel gun still. She will only get better with time.

Around here it would be a $500 to $550 gun so I think you did good getting it for what you did.

Looks it was manufactured in 1983. In that condition with box and papers, you got a very good deal.

Between January and October of 1983. Probably closer to October than January.

Congrats Brando, Good advice from me would be, as with anything, buy the book before you buy the ----. This goes for guns, coins, etc.....
You did the right thing in researching before you went to the show.

That is a fair price on a great revolver. The 586 will give you years of enjoyment.

Brando: Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your first gun. It's a good one at a good price (I'm in the St. Louis market). Having spent some time with the forum, one learns a lot of the ins and outs of particular models. While not a big deal, the 586s no dash and -1 were subject to a recall. If your gun does not have an "M" on the inside of the yoke the issue was not corrected in your particular gun. It's no problem to correct though. S&W will pay shipping and they will replace the hammer nose and the firing pin bushing and mark it with the "M". A lot of guys don't care, but there can be issues with some primers. Give S&W a call.
Once again this is no big deal --- you have a great gun.

Great choice for a first revolver. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Don't be suprised when you suddenly realize that you need another, and another, and so on.

I agree with Cashdog, a S&W in 357 Mag is a great choice for your first handgun/revolver.

Does anyone have any tips on solid cleaning supplies to keep the gun in its pristine condition? As well as ammo for both carry and range usage?

The 586 was my first revolver as well,
I Liked it so much that I picked up this 17-6 (top) in .22lr to practice with.

The 586 is a fine choice for your 1st gun. I sure like mine. The price you paid is absolutely par for the course here in the Great Northwest - so you did fine there. Enjoy,
