Default L Frame 696 Cylinder Throat Size

I finally got around to measuring cylinder throats on my 696 no dash and find that they are all small. A .429 pin gage will not pass through any of the throats.

Is this common with the 696? Has anybody else measured their 696 throats? If so, what have you found?

I guess I'm wondering if the throats are small on purpose to keep the pressure down on the thin forcing cone or is this just another case of improperly sized throats.

Hi,

encountered the same thing: A .429 lead bullet will not pass the cylinder throats of our 696. Not even if you press on with a wooden stick. But obviously, it doesn't affect the accuracy of the gun.

regards
Ulrich

My 696 was leading badly when I tried it out with some 240 LRN a couple weeks ago. (still is as I haven't found the cure yet.) So I drove some slugs thru the throats and measured them. Here's what I came up with...

I measured some new lead bullets in several places... they were .4297"
After driving them thru each cyl they measured .4293" so I suspect, but don't know cuz I'm not experienced enough on the subject, that they are on the small side.
