Default 686-3 Classic Hunter Serial Number check

Howdy, I've had my 686 since I bought it new, if I remember correctly it would have been late 1987 or early '88 but I thought I'd check based on the serial number; it's a 686 -3 BDR35xx

So what's the value of these in the used market? The unfluted cylinder, it's never had a scope nor D&T'ed, trigger was tuned by Smith about a year after I bought it, I believe Millet sights and it's been that way ever since. I polished the frame with Mother's back then too and haven't touched it since, it looks like it's chrome making it look cool but probably not as useful in a true hunting situation.

Thanks and Happy Shooting!

Mine is "box-stock" and the collector from whom I bought it two years ago couldn't recall if he ever fired it but thought he didn't. However it was clean when I got it so I really can't tell. I'm curious about the stocks on yours - mine's box label indicates that it was built with target stocks as you see it but yours has Hogues. What does your box label list for stocks? According to the SCoSW, they all are supposed to have the same product code (104249). I would think that would change if any part of the gun changed.

Again according to the SCoSW, there were 5,000 made but they were shipped over a period of years afterward. A lot of S&W's records were lost in a computer crash in 1994 but they were able to tell me that three were shipped after that.

I get tempted to shoot mine from time to time but have resisted thus far.

Ed

Oops - forgot you asked about their value. As best I can recall, I paid around $600 for mine. Frankly, I thought I bought it for a hundred or more less than it was worth, given that it is all-original and may not have been fired.

I have one also.

It's a 686-3 and came with Hogue grips.

Serial # BBVxxx, product code also 104249.

I bought it new in Feb 1989 for $397.32

Mine came with Hogue's as you see it, I think I paid $365 or 375 for mine (in that neighborhood).

Thanks for the replies and enjoy!

I purchased this 686-3 awhile back, it came with both stock & Pachmar grips (not sure where the pachmars came from)
sometimes the inside of the grips will give an indication as to the "birth date" although it could just mean the date for the grips, (although mine co-inside with the serial # of the revolver)

Don't ya love that back strap??????

Yes, I do. All my S&Ws have 10-groove backstraps and while the round-butt ones feel the same with round-to-square conversion grips, the old square butt looks nicer.

Bought mine in 89 I think. Classic Hunter. By far the best shooter I have ever owned, and I will take it to my grave I think. My advice to anyone who has one, never sell!
