I love that custom 3" 581. The closest thing I have is my 3" 681+ PC. If I can ever get my hands on a 581 or 681, I'll do the same. In addition, I have one 686-6+ 4"

Yep, my 681+ PC started out as a green/black Birdsong "T" coated gun. When I got it, the finish was showing a little wear on the high spots, so I called Birdsong's and spoke with Walter Birdsong himself in an effort to learn how to remove it. He asked me if I had one of those S&W revolvers he did for them years ago, and I said I did. He said he could never understand why they wanted that finish on such a gun. He also said that blasting with aluminum oxide or beads was probably the only way I'd get it all off. I used the aluminum oxide and got that darker grey, Ruger-like effect. I love the gun. Shoots great, locks up tight and is accurate as it can be.

Currently, my only L frames are 2, 2.5" 686s, a -3 and LH no dash.

How do you like that Altamont grip? Is the back strap open? Thinking of ordering one.

I really like it. Feels good and looks good. I get lots of compliments on it. I shoot better with the Altamont grip then with the stock rubber. The backstrap is open, but I don't find that a problem with the fuller grip of the Altamont. A pic of the backstrap below.

You won't regret it. One of the best purchases I have ever made for my firearms. The fit and finish is superb. I hit a steel plate at 50yds 4 out of 5 times offhand with the Altamont grip, compared to 3 out of 6 with the stock grip.

I had a 4" 686 that was a nice gun, but just didn't do it for me, so I sold it.
I happened across a nice blued 586 4" that walked into my LGS as I was picking up a Wilson Combat they they were FFLing for me.
This no dash 586 has Combat Grips in Bubinga by John Culina.
I consider the 586 to be the spiritual successor to all the great pinned and recessed revolvers that came before it.
They just have a panache and a mystique that the 686 doesn't have. And the 686 is great.
This gun with these grips are a real nice combination.
I predict that the 586's will become super collectible in the next decade as the pinned and recessed guns will continue to get snapped up.
The L Frames also fit my hand perfectly.

A couple of mine. First a 686 no dash . Second a LNIB 586 no dash. Still working on my photography . Maybe I should use the Wife Unit's Cannon instead of my IPhone.

Have shown this here before. It's the only L frame I currently own and have owned since bought new in 1981. Still have the original box, paperwork and stocks. It still wears the Hogue monogrip I installed many years ago. I didn't want to beat up the target stocks carrying it as a duty gun, so installed the Hogue, as it was and still is the most comfortable to me on that gun. Back then there were no rubber Hogues, just the hard plastic. I still like them. It was my last duty revolver, which I carried until 1985 when we switched to the, then new, 3rd Gen Smith 9's. I will never sell it, and hopefully my heirs won't either.

I love the L's, but somehow N's have taken over as the dominant frame size in my safe. Still, I've managed to hold onto a few nice ones.
