They went with the smaller L frame grip style to accommodate the extra cushion on the backstrap built into the 500 grips.

I personally perfer wood to rubber and have purchased a beatiful set of Hogue grips made from Kingwood with accent cap. They not only set the gun off but feel better while shooting as they fit my hands well.

So as not to see further confusion about what X frame grips fit, the following pictures are X grips on a round butt N frame 629.

They are a perfect fit for the N frames. Many people are using them because of the cushioning effect of the added grip material on the backstrap.

Sorry about the mistake apparently my memory is failing me as it has been years since I swapped my factory grips with Hogue Kingwood. I should of remembered since I took the factory 500 grips and put the on my 4" 329

swinggrind,

You're not the only one confusing the grips on the round butt frames. Absolutely no need to apologize as much debate has occurred with how these grip interchange.....

So many of the wrong grips have been ordered by others that were wrong that I felt compelled to offer some clarifying pictures.

Welcome to the board to a couple of new member posting on this thread. Lookin' for more participation from you!

Agreed. When you think about it, the RB L frame grip size standardization on L, N & X frames should have really simplified things. But until everyone catches on, it's still a nightmare.

Will the X frame grip fit on a square butt N frame? Or square butt L frame?

This thread is another example of the confusion....lol

The X-Frame grip frame is a roundbutt K-Frame.... Many custom grip makers don't even list the L because the round K is the same thing.

If you order a custom wood grip for your x-frame, you will need to order the K frame, either in round but design or the conversion grip that will more closely match the factory rubber xframe grips.

Badger makes some real comfortable grips for the x-frame (Kframe) Smith & Wesson Pistol Grips

Default X Frame Grip

Would someone please unconfuse me on this subject. I have
Uncle Mikes grips (boot and boot type ) for my K/L frames, also
have older and new (thinner) wood grips for same.
decided to put one of the boot grips on my N frame (Mtn Gun)
but non of them fit. I then put a couple on my X frame (460)
and they fit fine. Am I missing something or doing something
wrong? Looking at ads for Pachmayr and Hogue, they list a grip
that fits a K/L and X frame but make no mention of the
N frame for this particular grip. I have not tried to mount my
X frame grip on my N frame but I think I will try it to see if
I am doing something wrong. Will someone please answer
and tell me where you think I am doing wrong. Any help will
be appreciated because after reading what some posters are
doing I'm confused as to my situation. DOES K FRAME GRIP
FIT A N FRAME?? These are all RB art

The X frame takes K frame grips...here is my 500 with K frame round to square conversions on it. (I also have a set or rosewoods just like this in the full round Kframe that I can use on my 19 or my 500 )

I know guys are putting the factory 500 grip on the 329PD so maybe S&W is putting K grip fames on some of the round butt Nframes??? But I was under the belief that the N was a different grip frame. From the picture posted earlier, it appears that the 629 also has the round butt K.

The only N frame I have is the square butt.

"Regular production" N round butt frames became standard replacing the sq butt c.1996. They are the K/L/X frames size.

However, "distributor exclusive" ordered guns for example: the Lew Horton 3" 24-3 and 624 were ordered with N size round butt frames as well as other "exclusive" distributor orders like the Mtn Guns, etc.

I have a couple of 629-3s (Classic DLX) that I will have to
do some grip experimentation with because I know that K
grips will not fit on my 625-9. That's a mighty fine looking
rig you have there!

Sorry: I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I received the
following information from knowledgible service reps at both
Pachmayr and Hogue. Round butt revolvers in K,L and X
frames will all take the same grips, but round butt N frame
revolvers will ONLY take a N frame grip. Hope this information
will help clear things up, I know it did for me as I was going
nuts trying to make something fit on my 625-9.

Unfortunately, they are confused as well. Please recognize we are not talking about a great deal of difference here. They may get away with it with their wrap around rubber grips by just cinching them up tight. I can also squeeze my X frame "Tamer" factory rubber Hogues over my 624 N frame Rd Butt too.

But ask them if they ever put a pair of N frame RB wood panels on a 329 PD, for example, the wood will over hang the frame at the top of the backstrap. Just like they would on a K/L/or X frame.

We just can't compare wood grip fit to rubber grip fit for these guns...

I have a RB 625, a RB 657, a RB 627 and a RB 629. All the X frame rubber grips purchased through S&W fit those RB N frame guns.

I can't speak for grips purchased directly from Hogue or from any other manufacturer. I also can't speak for the S&W X frame rubber "Tamer" fit on L or K frame RB grips as I haven't personally tried them. I have heard they fit and I believe they will fit but I can't guarantee it. I don't believe most wood grips will interchange, K or L frame, for N frame either...

Keep in mind the S&W X frame grips have the cushioning material covering the backstrap and that may permit the factory X frame grips to fit RB K and L frame grips when wooden ones, made to closer tolerances to the fit the dimensions of the grip frame, won't...

I've also heard there are difficulties with the fit of Hogue RB to Sq Bt conversion grips for N frame RB guns.... Confused enough yet??

I will say if you want X frame grips for any RB N frame like those I pictured buy them directly from S&W. They will fit that frame. Any other frame application for these or other Hogue grips and you're on your own....

Yes the Hogue Tamer rubber grip is very accomodating and will work on K/L/X or N.

butt, butt.... K's don't fit on N's, and X's are K's, but X's fit on N's only if they're rubber?

I understand, but see how it could be very confusing.

Sounds like we all need to get a "grip" on this grip situation.LOL.
Looks like we've got K/L/X and newer round butt N's taking the same grips unless it's a special round butt N then it takes standard round butt N frame grips, is that about it?

Welcome to the forum.

Just to clarify, presuming you're talking about the same brand grips, in my opinion yes. But that is probably a personal decision and you should make your own comparison. Let us know what you decide.

what a headache.

Someone needs to create a "grip matrix" with the different grip types (wood, rubber, hogue, ahrends, round, square, factory, etc) across the top and all the different frame types (X, N, K, L, Round, Square) down the side and fill in the intersection boxes with go, no-go, maybe, or you can jam it on there but it'll look like a dog's a**. Then have a Mod sticky the sumbiotch for permanent reference

just my $.02 worth

Default Tamer Grips

I'm using the X-Frame Tamer Grip on a 686+

Form (Fit and Finish)? Eh h... I'd give it a B or B-

Function? ... AWESOME!! A++

I haven't posted much HERE so I will assume that most or all of you don't know this, but I only ever shoot with just my left hand because my right arm is paralyzed permanently due to an extremely serious injury that occurred while over seas.

I love firearms though, especially now post injury, shooting became a huge passion since my return and throughout my slow rehabilitation.

I use the Hogue X-Frame Tamer Grip (#29467?) because I'm convinced it affords me much greater one handed control when shooting HOT loads of .357!

The fit admittedly isn't perfect, below what I would prefer but then again I'm being unfair here because it was designed for another firearm!

It certainly installs properly by all means, there are no concerns in that regard, it slides right on and looks great! I simply point out that the area designed as cushioning around the frame that's located at the web of your hand, between thumb and pointer finger, well that rubber isn't molded quite as tight to the frame as stock grip would be but it is only a very minor difference and only a perfectionist would ever even mention it.

Its minor, it could even just be mine! Certainly a great cushion effect though!! I WONT be going back!

This is probably because the X frame and N frame are both a bit wider than my 686 L-frame but don't quote me because I could just as easily be wrong or mistaken.

Anyway I would give the "fit" a mid-grade but the quality of solution, excellent function, grip-ability, accuracy improvement, recoil dampening, etc, all get an A++ !!

Love the forum her folks, get yourself a tamer grip for your K or L frame! I love using mine!

Morning

Just to add less (or more) confusion here about the Model 500 Impact Absorbing Hogue Square Butt Conversion Grips 29467. Those fit K & L great, fill the hand more, & definitely absorb some of the recoil (they cover the backstrap completely).

BUT- even though they are Hogue they are NOT available from, or listed at, Hogue , & they not available from Hogue aftermarket suppliers as they are only available direct from S&W or from S&W OEM part suppliers. (it seems S&W holds the rights to the 29467 grips.
