686-6 Recoil shield warping
I just got this back from S&W not even a month ago for what appeared to be metal fatigue on the outside rim of the forcing cone. Now, the recoil shield is showing the same signs. Like before, function and accuracy has not been affected yet. This is just really getting to me.
The outside right edge of the recoil shield is developing a ridge in around the 4 - 5 o'clock position. A camera phone is all I have, but the light captures the anomaly. Is this normal wear and tear?

It's hard to be sure from the photo - is the wear on the inside (facing the rear cylinder) or outside, like would happen if the gun were dropped (not that I'm saying you did that )? That would not generally be an area that would see effects from firing.

Warping huh. Did the gun accelerate to warp speed at any time? Because Scottie is always warning; "Cap-teen she cahn't tek eenymore!"
I am kidding. I know nothing of which you speak.

If you ran your fingernail from the face to the outside, it would catch on the ridge. The outside edge looks and feels fine.

In over 50 years of shooting revolvers (Colts and S&Ws) I have never observed this phenomenon. I have no idea as to the forces at work that would create that. More perplexing is why it is evident in only the 4-5 o'clock position. I have an unmodified no dash, a modified no dash and a 686-5. NONE exhibit that condition. I'm gonna subscribe to this thread, to see what we can find out.....

Those fuzzy photos sow what appears to be a minor ding on the recoil shield.

I can't find any evidence of in impact mark on the outside. Its like the metal flowed like a liquid in one spot.
