Default Customized 625 and 25-12 Heritage 1917

The 625 was a 5" model of 1988. It was cut to 4" and converted to DAO by SDM Fabricating in 2004. The 25-12 sports Spegal grips.

Below is what Scott Mulkerin did to my 625. I replaced the Miculek grips recently.

DAO conversion with trigger job and overtravel stop
Shorten barrel to 4" recrown and install Weigand interchangeable front sight base.
Competition chamfer on cylinder...holes numbered
Polish...trigger,hammer,screws,thumb latch and ejector rod
Millet rear sight ( your choice of white outline or plain black )
SDM Gold bead front sight and SDM Super Sight ( Red or Green )
Miculek Competition Grips

The 5" 25-2 is a cut down custom job. It has a narrow smooth trigger and a Performance Center action job to go with it. It shoots very nicely, but I tend to feel the blued finish is more delicate than the stainless, so the stainless guns get shot more. The 25-2 is semi-retired.

A couple of years ago I picked up this 625-4 .45 acp with the 5" full underlugged barrel. It shot great, but it was just too nose heavy for my taste.

Wanting a lighter gun, I found a Mountain Gun barrel from Midway USA. I sent my gun to Frank at LSG Manufacturing in Texas. LSG has been an authorized Smith & Wesson warranty station for 32 years so I knew they could do the job.

The gun had a matte finish while the barrel was a bright stainless. To get the two parts to match they had to bead blast everything which resulted in a finish that could pass for factory. I am more than pleased with how Frank at LSG handled the work on my gun.

You ever decide to put that on the market, I'd like a PM/email. How are the chamber dimensions?

Not a real artsy pic, but here's one I snapped at the range yesterday. Love a nice and dirty revolver! :-)

4" 625-3 with cordia retro banana Ahrends on left, 3" 66-4 with Badger's on right.

The throats are .4560" as measured with my pin gages and my internal mic. My 625PC measures .4522" with the pins and mic and my 625PC measures .4515". They all shoot the same: very well. The 25-2 originally had fairly bad chamber alignment. After I fixed that, it shot very well. I suspect the .45 ACP/AR stuff shoots well even with the large throats because the large pistol primer in the tiny case propels the bullet thru the chamber throats into the forcing cone before the gas pressure gets high enough to cause blow-by. Good barrel, good chamber alignment overcomes large throats. At least that is my guess. Does not work in .45 Colt.

Bought this 4" at a recent gun show. I wasn't really hunting for a 4", and that's why i walked right into this one. It came with the box and the original Pachs...now wearing some Combats.
...and the same 3" posted earlier in the thread.

Here is my Model 625-3 with a new reflex sight I just mounted on it last night. I can't wait to try it out - I plan on using it for a Steel Challenge gun.

Regards,

Dave

I now have my Bowen project gun in hand. It was a 629-4, which I had converted to 45ACP. Bowen did all the cool stuff he does to a conversion. I just got it Thursday night, and managed to get a few rounds through it Friday. No photos yet, and I am not sure when I will get to shoot it again, but I am looking forward to it.

Always bring extra ammo...

I keep 105 loaded moonclips, as above, in each of two metal .223 ammo boxes - and a pair of Tupperware fridge boxes with 15 loaded clips in each for range bag carry. The 105 loaded clips loosely fit in three levels of three rows of seven on each layer, with a hardboard separator. Drill a 1" hole on one end to act as a finger hole for removal. The best accessory for a .45 ACP S&W revolver, in my mind, is easy - more moonclips! Mine came from Ranch Products, maker of the 'clips included with new S&Ws. A nutdriver style demooner is helpful, too.

Merry Christmas!

John

Smile Testing my converted revolver

From an email to Hamilton Bowen earlier today:

The attached photos show a "group" shot at 15 yards on an indoor range about an hour ago. Almost all of it can be covered by the loaded moonclip shown in the second photo. It took me a good close look to realize that the top hole was actually two rounds hitting very close to each other. I shot this double action, too. Amazing for me, given my crummy vision etc. This revolver has an XS front dot and a Bowen rear Express sight - nothing for precision.

The ammo for this group was Georgia Arms 45AR loaded with 200 grain CCI bonded JHP (I presume Gold Dots). I am not sure I care for that ammo; although there were no signs of pressure in the primers or cases, it was just a little harder to extract than I liked, even though the stated velocity is 825fps, well within the standard pressure envelope as I understand it. I only shot 12 of them.

The bullet strikes were a little high seeming until I took off my dunce cap and perceived that the gun was sighted for a 6 o'clock hold, at least for my eyes. I am also off to the right about ... 2" or so at 15 yards, which may also be a function of my eyes and/or being left handed. It was pretty consistent with all ammo types; the 12 rounds of 45AR, and about 100 rounds of Black Hills 230 grain ball, and a few rounds of Gold Dot 230 grain JHP (my old duty ammo). When I do some cleaning this afternoon I'll work on the sights a bit. I may also have to find some better grips; the monogrip seems a bit slick to me.

My Governor with the Hogue Zombie Grips. It's so Ugly it's pretty (especially when the grips glow in the dark)

Here is my 1917:

Here is my Webley MK VI made in 1918 that I occasionally shot .45 AR out of. It could handle .45ACP on moonclips, but since the .45 ACP is a bit hotter than the old .455 Webley round, I kept the diet nice and light.

I won't post all of mine since most have already turned up here but this one might be of interest. It's a 625-4, which is the Springfield Armory Commerative but this one does not have the engraving. The product number on the box references the Commerative and the serial number seems to indicate a small over run of guns sold public without the markings. I probably should get it lettered some day to see what Roy turns up on it. The grips are not original, as it came with the Hogue Monogrip.

A 625-3 with target trigger & hammer -

A 22-4 (SN: TRR00xx). The stag grips are enough thicker than the stock grips to be a lot more managable.

The 22-4 in it's barbque leather -

Sorry to contaminate this thread with a NON S&W, but.....I see that has already happened here and there.

Wow, nice thread, folks and some beautiful revolvers. I pick up my S&W 625JM from Turners next Friday. Hoping I like the way it shoots! .45 in a revolver should be a kick if you will excuse the pun.

Ruger - contaminate?

I distinctly read the words "all models" in the thread title.

The safe queen days are over for this 25-2
I recently bought this from a friend and it shoots as good as you would expect.

Yes, this is an old thread but many of the photos are fuzzy or missing, not unlike the posters.

My photos disappeared so here are a couple new photos to view and revive the thread. First up is the 28-2 I built in the 80s and second is the S&W rebuttal in stainless steel. A Foothills revolver and a Mountain Gun.

Both revolvers have rounded butts. The Mountain Gun is wearing a pair of stag cb/sb inversions, the Foothills Revolver has a pair of RB on it. At least until I fashion another conversion set.

Yeah... bucket pretty much laid waste to this thread, among many others.

1952 vintage Model of 1950 Target. Been searching for a Model of 1955 Target since I got it.

I don't know how I missed this thread back in '12, but in the spirit of thumbing our noses at Photobucket, I'll play now:
