Default My new Keith Brown grips on 24-3 LH

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Keith Brown at a meeting of the S&W NE Ohio Bunch. The conversation got around to a solution for the horrible finger-groove combat grips that came with my Lew Horton 24-3 that I bought new in 1984. No human I know was able to grip that gun properly. The grips LOOK nice, but fail in the handling department. Keith had a solution and produced this beautiful pair of grips for my 24-3. This is what S&W should have made in the first place. I only hope my photography does them justice.

This has transformed the gun, it handles much better, no struggling to find the best finger position. I have fired this gun, but not yet with these grips. I hope to soon and expect it to carry and handle better than ever.

Thanks Keith!

Your photography does do them justice Tony. How do you like shooting the 24?

We'll have to get together and do some shooting at West Branch sometime after you retire.

That is a fine looking solution to your problem. I'm curious about handling when you get around to firing it.

Most finger-groove grips don't fit my hand - so I sure like Keith's answer to the problem. If they work as well as they look - you're in fat city. Enjoy,

Jerry

I have never had a set of finger-groove S&W stocks that actually matched the shape and spacing of my fingers. I have been tempted to whittle on some that I have, but while I can take wood away from where it doesn't belong, it's not as easy to put it back where it was already removed.

One of these days I'm going to get myself a decent scroll saw and some gouges, then try to create my own stocks for a number of handguns. In the interim, I have to say that the KB solution pictured above looks like a fine approach to putting right what S&W so badly misconceived.

Default grips NICE

The grips look very shootable, but does your thumb fall on the cut out ridge for a two hand hold. This is the problem on my 624. The factory grips fill the hand but as you say, you cannot get a consistent grip when locking the thumb. ALSO If you don't mind what did they set you back?

Gorgeous!

That's the thing about finger grooved stocks and grips, they either fit your hand or they don't.

They look about the same size and shape as S&W's K frame, round butt target stocks, which are my all-time favorite wood grips for shooting. Yours are certainly a lot better looking, though! His work is always beautiful.

Every time I see some of Keith's grips I can't get over how utterly beautiful they are.
If I was still into such things I would be all over them like white on rice.

It is a great shooting gun. I have a nice El Paso Saddlery paddle holster for it. I'll have plenty of time (I think) to shoot in about 10 months.

Thanks, I'll be hanging on to the originals though to keep the package complete (2 piece box, tools, papers, etc.)

If you are talking about the football cut-out area it is not an issue because I'm a lefty so my strong thumb is on the other side of the grip. Check out Keith's website for the pricing info. Price depends upon whether Keith supplies the medallions (if you want them), checkering, wood choice and so on.

I could not be more satisfied. I may become a KB junkie because I am considering a set for my 2 1/2" 19-3. Post some pics when you get yours.

With due respect, Mr. Brown doesn't just hit home-runs, he knocks them out of the park.

I agree with the OP's opinion of the OE stocks and that those KBs would indeed appear to be the correct answer to the original stocking problem for that model. Very nice indeed.

Without question that is Eggzachary what S&W should have created for their N frame round butt line of revolvers.

While I LIKE the fingergroove combats they tend to be too large for real practical purposes.

Well done! to you and Keith for your vision.

Allen

Here is a long-overdue update. This past weekend I finally had a chance to shoot this gun with the new grips. It was only an informal plinking session, but I had no trouble hitting an 80 yard gong offhand with 205 gr. reloads. IMO the gun handles superbly when compared to the standard combats. And, it looks fantastic. It just plain fits the hand much better and my fingers are not locked into an unnatural position. I could not have found a better grip, it perfectly compliments a 3" RB N-frame.

Tony,
Hope you don't mind me showing what Keith did
for my 66 3". I bought it at auction and it had an
ugly pair of smooth magnas from somewhere.
Keith made me these "Hideout Ropers" and now
it looks as good as it shoots. Keith is an Artisan
for sure.

I had Keith make a set for my snubby model 19

But went with a set of his magnas in a pre-war pattern for my 24-3

I considered the same thing, with a Tyler T grip for my 24-3. Magnas with a T grip are near perfect for me, especially on a K-frame. I had equipped my duty 586 with PC magnas and a T grip for many years. Great combo for me.

Wow. Those really do look great; both guns and grips. Every one. I will have to look at his website.

The rb nframe combat grips fit me just about better than any grips I've ever used, but then I 'm missing about 1/2" of my pinky on gun hand, so mebbe I don't count! On the other hand, those are some darn nice looking grips!
