SW 500's scarce?
I was wondering if the SW500's were scarce or that no one wants to part with theirs? I watch the "Guns for Sale" often and hardly ever see one. Even on GB or other sites I don't see many used or at any reasonable price. So are they scarce or are some holding on to them for later investments or are they just too fun too sell?

I just bought a lnib one with 8" barrel with about 250 rounds of ammo for $900 this week. I thought it was a good deal, so keep watching, they are out there. The ammo made the deal much sweeter.

The ES, almost never come up anymore. The 6.5s are pretty scarce too. The 8-3/8s (in both flavors), and to a lesser extent the 4" are pretty common.

The 8 3/8" .500 first came out in 2003 but can still be bought new, Bass Pro Shops has them in stock, but be prepaired to pay full retail. They also have the 8 3/8" .460 in stock as well.
The 4" was introduced in 2004 and appear quite a lot at gun dealers.
The 6 1/2" introduced in 2008 seems to be the rarest and hardest to locate, rarely seen at gun shops.

I have been seeing a lot of them in the local pawn shops and gun shows in slightly used condition. Around here they are certainly not scarce at all. I think a lot of buyers may not have expected how violent they are to shoot, and the price of ammo is prohibitive for the non - handloader.

I have bought/shopped for them over the past couple of years and the complete ES Kit was by far the most difficult to find.

I wouldn't consider them scarce and don't know about "later investments" probability other than the ES models seem to be less available since the factory discontinued them. Of the PC's, I see fewer 5" JR models for sale than any.
I will say they are fun (and can be expensive) to shoot.
edited to add:
It does seem the prices on used models are creeping upwards from what I've seen in the past.

I see them used in shops from time-to-time, but maybe not so much now as a few years ago. I think back then that a lot of people bought them because they were the newest, hottest thing out there, tried them, didn't like the noise, blast, recoil and expense of shooting them, got it out of their systems, and decided to unload. Now they've been around nearly a decade and aren't quite the hot-ticket anymore, so people who buy them are folks who have thought things through and are more likely to use and hang onto them. Just my theory.

Depending on which model you're trying to find it can be difficult because of the limited number of them made and being discontinued making them scarce. Most of the sought after models are also PC models.
The 2-3/4" ES model came out in 2007 and production was rumored to have been stopped because the supplier was unable to provide cases.
The 6-1/2" PC model came out in 2004 and only 500 of them were made.
The 7-1/2" PC two tone came out in 2004 as well and only 2000 of them were made.
There is also a 10-1/2" PC two tone Hunter model that came out in 2007 that I have only seen 2 of. One of which remains unfired NIB
The standard production models still continue to be made. Can some 500's be considered rare? Maybe in a few more years I'll let you know

I have seen four of them listed in the past few weeks on a GA specific trading website, and they are on gunbroker, so I do not see how they would be considered "rare".

I'm thinking that when they first came out everone wanted one, just had to have the biggest baddest new toy on the block, same as when they first .44 mag's came out.
However......when it came time to actually shoot them..
Well....A lot of people got all caught up on the hype of how they would break you hand, sprain your wrist, recoil so bad that they come back and split you head open.. exc....
Then there was the cost of ammo... It's not cheap.... not by a long shot.
So, people who had them dumped them on the market at used prices, normally fired very little, once or not fired at all..
Face it , it's a speciality gun, not ment for takeing out and "Plinking" every year or so..
it was built for Hunting.. those itchy, bitey, scratchy, things that put you a little lower on the food chain than you think you are..
However the "recoil junkies" that have them, and shoot them , mostly reload for them also.. love them.. they are wonderfully accutate, and once you get over the recoil, they really aren't that bad to shoot....
And usually have a few. As for the collector market.with all the "tricks" the goverment is doing now, banning .50 cal anything has been talked about for a while now.. Who knows, you might not be able to get one in the future...
So everyone who has a chance is grabbing them up, either to use or put away..
