Value of Mod. 29-2 (or 29-4??) with 5-in. Bbl. & unfluted cylinder???
Was at the local gun show and a regular dealer has a nice, virtually new Smith and Wesson Model 29-2 with the 5-inch barrel and unfluted cylinder. Nice, matched target grips and a very tattered box/papers.
Price on it was stickered at $1,000, which I thought was high. I looked at it and asked if he had some room on the price. I could likely get it for $850 plus sales tax, since I have bought a number of guns from this guy in the past. I'd like the consensus opinion of the serious collectors here on the gun's value (and any likelihood of appreciation, since I will not shoot it....Have a 6-inch 629-4 for shooting).
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

It could have been a 29-4.....I was trying to remember the dash number when I got home....If it is, what would be a fair price????

Beaqrcat:
If it is a 29-2, I doubt it is correct. A 29-4 or latter with a 5 inch full lug barrel and an unfluted cylinder in mint condition with box, tools, papers could justify that price - I have seem them advertised over a $1000. Most of the five inch guns were limited production so they are not going to get cheaper.

Guys...
Just for info there were a few documented and factory created Mod 29-2s with 5" barrels made. When I say a few -- I mean very few....
A sure indication the 29-2 you mention isn't one of them is the unfluted cylinder it has.
The actual 29-2 5" guns are extremely rare and one of the few N frames missing from my collection of the late P&R period guns... If you ever do come across one of these guns I'm interested!

I'll confirm the dash number later this week. I'm going to drive down to the dealer's and check it out again.....It seems to be calling my name. Thanks for the information, guys. It was very helpful.

Bearcat, Good luck, I hope it works out for you. I am learning about S&W's, so I find this thread interesting.

Around here any older N frame in the box will start at 850-900 and go up from there

I must be in heaven, since I was able to purchase one of these (29-4, 5"bbl) in excellent plus condition with all accessories at the S&W KC show. Super nice for my collection.
Thanks Dave for parting with it.

I too really like the unfluted cylinder. I have a 629 Classic w/8" barrel unfluted also, and now I'm on the hunt for the 29-4 unfluted 3" model.

Lobo, I have one of the Hill Country 5" 29-4 like yours. I picked it up around 2002 at Clark's Custom Guns for 3 bills out the door. One can shoot some stout loads in these. I didn't know what it was until I researched it later. Bob!

Man you stole that one!
Yeah, I really like these guns. I also have the 6" (regular ramp FS) and the 8 3/8" gun. The one that I need to complete the "collection" (IMHO) is the 6" with the four way adjustable front sight.

Wonder if there is a "pinto" 29-4 unfluted cylinder out there somewhere? That would be cool!

I see a lot of unfluted cylinder, full underlug, N-Frames going for around $1,000. If this one is rare, or you just plain like it, then I do not think a grand is outrageous. That's just the going price these days. Buy it for $850 and spend the remainder on a nice set of S&W combats.
