Default S&W Model 10-6 Stainless??

There's a local guy that has what he says is a model 10-6 but it's stainless. I thought the stainless version was the model 64 but he swears up and down that the frame says 10-6. Is this somekind of transition model or something? Thanks.

It's not uncommon for a gun that has been at some point satin nickeled or hard chromed to be mistaken for stainless steel. I suspect that's the case here.

Or a mis-stamped model 64-3 of the same era. This would have a matte silver ("flash chromed") hammer and trigger, not case colored.

The woods are full of these 'stainless' guns that are just matte chrome or satin nickel.

A favorite was my P226 that had been matte hard chromed by APW in Florida. A fellow at the gun shop insisted that it was a stainless P226......in 1995. Telling him that I had bought it as an unissued police trade and that it originally had the K-Kote finish did nothing to persuade him.

It does look for all the world like it's stainless. If it's a mis-marked 64 wouldn't that make it somewhat of a collector's item or are they pretty common?

No, they are pretty common and it happens all the time and bring no premium. They are not like mis-stuck coins or mis-printed stamps.

It's hard to render a definitive judgment based upon that photo alone, but it strikes me as looking nickeled rather than stainless.

I have seen some blued guns that were hard chromed and you could not tell the difference between them and a stainless. That could been what happened to that gun by a previous owner.
