Default Interpreting Numbers on the Frame

I have a Model 629 Classic that I like a great deal. In a magazine article I read recently, there was a discussion of Model 29/629 revolvers that mentioned markings on the frame 629-1, 629-2, etc. My pistol has 629-6 stamped below the serial number.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning?

Thank you for your time.

These are called "dash numbers" or engineering changes, when the factory makes what they consider a significant mechanical change to the prior version. Sometimes these are minor (like reversing the thread direction on the ejector rod). Occasionally, a different "dash" indicates the same gun with a different barrel length.

In the 629-6, it is apparently the same as the -5 with the addition of the internal lock, which occurred in 2001. Hope this is helpful.

You're welcome. Hopefully your granddaughter will learn to appreciate the fine points of shooting your .44 someday .
