Bo-Mar style rear sight for 686?

Are there any of the Bo-Mar type adjustable rear sights that would work on a 686?

The owner/manufacturer of BoMar sights was killed in a car wreck last fall and the business has been closed.

You might try calling Gil Hebard Guns (309-289-2700). He carried a full line of BoMar sights and ribs.

Not exactly the same , but a fine sight is "Millett".

Do you have a revolver without a rear sight, as is a gun that had a scope on it and the sight was removed, or are you looking for a different sight than factory?

Thanks for the replies. I'm having trouble shooting my 686 accurately. It's my first revolver. I don't know what the problem is. I'm thinking it's the sight picture. It could be me. It shoots tight groups when I'm resting on something. But, I have trouble off hand (could also be the low lighting in the range and my aging eyes).

I had Clark Custom put a patridge style sight on the front and do a trigger job on it. I changed out the grip to something that fits better. But, I'm still having trouble with accuracy. Maybe I'm flinching. I don't know. The last thing I can think to do is replace the rear sight with more of a target style rear sight.

Or, my other options are to cut my losses and sell it...or put it in the safe and forget about it for another 10 years.

I'm meeting a revolver guy at the range in a couple of weeks to let him check it out. I really want to love this gun...

I'm with you on the " my aging eyes " thing! :D

Don't give up on a good revolver. You might try different glasses for shooting, or if your a true blind shooter....

The most common accuracy problem for handgun shooters that have some background in shooting other guns (particularly rifles) is lack of follow-through. Believe me, I understand your concerns with sight picture and aging eyes, but have you tried dry-firing your 686 and CAREFULLY observing for movement of your sights during/after you release?

S&W revolvers generally are among the handguns that are easier to follow-through with, since they have a fairly fast lock-time and usually a pretty good release or break, when fired single-action. If you can maintain a fair group when firing from a rested position, I would investigate the follow-through issue and see what you find. Tiny movements of your gun during/after release are a dead giveaway that there is a follow-through issue that needs attention.

It is usually the case that in aimed fire that is not taken in any particular rush, sight picture niceties are more a matter of preference than a big disparity in group size.

If sight picture is your issue then all you need to do is get a new rear slide from Weigand. They come in one height - .160" but three different notch widths: Narrow to duplicate the look of the Bomar, medium that gives just a bit more light (about the same as the S&W notch width) and wide that really opens it up and speeds up acquiring the sights. You can either have Weigand install it or if you order it with a new windage screw kit, install it yourself. It's very easy. Go to Smith Wesson Rear Sight Blade K L N. I have used them on several guns and to me it looks just like my Bomar sight picture.

If you are shooting OK from the bench it sounds like technique more than sights. Dry firing should help.
More input on those aging eyes- I have found that I have better luck shooting without corrective lenses as long as the distance to the target is 25 yards or less. It allows me to focus on the front sight and let the target and rear sight blur. One other thing you might try is a Merit Aperture. I used to use one for IHMSA and they really help.

I like the looks of the Weigand and might try the wide one at some point just to see how the extra width compares.

I'll post an update when the sight comes in and I'm able to test it out.

Hey SDave there is a used Smith Wesson sight set 30.00? on Fleabay.Exact as LPA but offer through S/W years ago for guns that were tapped for scopes.Used but might be ok Good luck. I found that a taller front patridge with a taller rear sight .Helps me, Good Luck Bob

Hey, thanks for the tip. I'm going to hold off and see how the LPA sight works before spending any more dough. I had the front sight replaced with a Patridge style sight. I hope the height of everything works out.

Hi guys,

I wanted to post a follow up. Well, I'm finally able to hit the target. This is from 25 yards. I fired off about 75 rounds today and this is a pretty average group. I'm stoked. Thanks so much for the help.

I purchased the gun in 1999. I didn't like the grips and never could hit anything with it and I put it away until the end of last year. Thanks to the input on this forum I changed out the grips, added a Patridge front sight, had a trigger job, and put on this LPA rear sight and did a bunch of dry fire practice.

Although, I'm not an expert shot...I'm real happy I can hit the target. It's a keeper.
