Default Recoil absorbing N frame grips

Which grips help with magnum recoil while still having a good in hand fit and feel?

These are probably the best. But I think they're only for round butt.

Pachmayr Grippers have made a big difference for me over the target stocks on my 4" 629-1. These are the ones that cover the backstrap, so you may notice a slightly longer reach to the trigger.

That raw place at the base of my thumb from the horn on those target stocks has healed up nicely, thank you.

I had the stock S&W rubber grips on my 629-6 when I first purchased it and really liked the comfort when shooting factory 300gr Federal loads. Then I bought the S&W Orange Tamer Survival grips that are pretty close to the stock rubber grips but may absorb recoil a little better, have slightly ( not much ) deeper finger grooves and seem to be tackier to the feel. Both these grips covered the backstrap and even though my hands are small I don't have any problem with reaching the trigger. I know the rubber grips are ugly as sin but I am not looking for a safe queen rather a working backcountry carry weapon.

I use pretty much only Herrett's roper stocks on my magnums. I do have a. Pair of Herretts Jordan Trooper stocks that I use for the really loads in my 29s. They really work. I notice a huge differance.

Pachmayr Grippers Decelerators have a soft rubber backstrap that works great on my 4" 29.

Another + for the Mod. 500's grips on the RB N frames.

There has been confusion about which Hogue grips cushion the backstrap as those below do... Be sure they are like the original Mod 500 X frames for your RB framed guns... Some of the conversion grips don't.

Make that +4! Just bought a set some 3 weeks ago for my 6" model 57. Made them Buffalo Bore 265 gr. L.W.N. loads a pleasure to shoot, even without my Past glove. Used Pacs before, then finally got to shoot a 500 wth them on it. Amazing difference! Adding a 500 with a 4" barrel to my must have list if I can find and afford one.

If anyone ever doubts the recoil absorbing effect from rubber or other synthetic grip material...

Just pull open an older much used set of Pachmayr grips and take note of the stress marks left in the rubber from the grip frame moving against the rubber during recoil. I have a 625-3 that came with Grippers. I never thought much of the recoil with it. Then I changed them out for some Presentation grips. I prefer the shape in the hand and left them on for a while. But I'm a wood grips snob and am in love with Ahrends grips and put them on almost all my S&W's... BUT... while they do have an amazing fit in my hand, they don't absorb ANY of the recoil. They fit so well that it's not that much of a change, but solid wood or nylon grips have to fit your hand just right so as to not focus the brunt of the recoil into one spot more so than the rest of your hand. The Hogue X frame grips are a little big in my hand since they not only wrap around that whole grip frame, they also have that softer insert inside to bounce that grip frame off and eat some recoil. I fully agree they work, but they are a hand full. I haven't tried a Gripper Decelerator yet with the even softer rubber compound but I would think they would work pretty well.

Nearly seven years ago, I ordered a made for S&W only Hogue .500 Magnum monogrip - $35 +s/h only from S&W Accessories. I first tried it on the 629MG I had - it made shooting .44 Magnums 'acceptable', recoil-wise. It does nothing for muzzle rise, save allowing a bit higher hold. I got a second monogrip for my 6" 629, too. The 629MG was soon replaced by a new production 4" 629. My Ahrends wood grips are on the 629's most of the time, as they mostly launch wimpy Magnums and, Specials, and even Russians. The utility of the S&W/Hogue .500 Magnum monogrips finds them other uses here:

6" 629-6 scoped with .500 monogrip:

on L-framed 296 - albeit briefly:

on Z-framed Governor... a new home:

Pretty decent purchase! Padding that backstrap helps.

Question

I have small hands and have Hogues on my M29-2. Thing is, It bites my trigger finger something terrible!!! I'm thinking it may be the wide target trigger because I don't have any such issues with my M28-2 with Presentation grips and narrow trigger. I'm thinking of two solutions, either a set of Pachmayr grips or possibly a narrow trigger.

I was thinking of getting a trigger and hammer set because I don't trust the local gunsmiths working on my guns. I reckon I could fit them myself. Is that a workable solution?

I concur on the 500 grips. They look big, but are surprisingly comfortable and do an excellent job of reducing/eliminating recoil. I had a 396 Mountain Lite in .44 Special with a stock open backstrap grip that was virtually unshootable. The 500 grip made it as comfortable as possible. I currently have 500s on my Thunder Ranch 325 which make the 31oz .45 ACP feel like a little .38. Get the 500 grips and you'll be very satisfied. I would put the 500 grip on a Governor or any N-frame without a second thought.

My best bud has Pachmayer rubbers on all of his "N" frame magnum (and 25-5) revolvers.
I know "recoil absorption" is quite subjective; I can't argue with my friends choice, in terms of recoil control in a hard recoiling revolver.
However, I can't bring myself to have rubber grips on my S&W's.
Like others, I favor Herrett's "Troopers", or "Shooting Master's" that cover the backstrap and spread the felt recoil over a larger area.

I too am looking for a grip replacement, for my 629. The stock grip is rubber and covers the backstrap, which is nice but the shape is wrong. From the look it seems like it must be very ergonomic, but it could be way more comfortable. Here is what it comes down to; On the 629 it's too narrow at the top of the backstrap. A softer compound would be less important than having a wider profile where the web at the base of the thumb contacts the backstrap.

Anyone else find this to be the issue? Any solutions?

On all my 44 magnum revolvers it's been the rubber pacemaker grips. I can grip them so tight I sink my fingers into them. I have a firm grip with the wood stocks but not as tight as the rubber grips. I use the rubber grips on my 1911's too. Bill

Btw, For looks nothing's better than the original S&W wood presentation grips.

Regardless of the style, the grips that will make recoil manageable for you are the ones that fit your hand best. My hands are medium-sized, with fingers perhaps a bit shorter than the average. For me, the absolutely unbeatable Magnum N-frame grips are the standard service grips plus a Tyler T-grip. The fact that my grasp is absolutely optimal takes away recoil as a factor.

Dear NSF: I have a new 629 5" classic coming to me soon (it's in CA purgatory) and I'm getting the Hogue's. I'm also looking at some beautiful Ahrends on Ebay and will probably spring for the Retro Combats in Moradillo or Cordia, as I am likely to shoot many more 44spcls that 44mag.

I hear the Pac's do well too.

Take care,

Rachel

In a classic N-frame well-fitted wood stocks are ideal. Rubber/Sorbothane grips will feel overly long in most hands. The notion of rubber recoil absorbing grips is probably a bit overrated.

Do the Model 500 grips with cushion backstrap still fit new N models like 629?

Yes. I have a new model 629 and I put 500 X frame grips. They fit.

Took em off for 2 reasons.

One: didn't lower recoil as much as I'd hoped.

Two: I didn't like my reach. Index finger seemed stretched a bit enough for me to pull well? ( I tend to use the same grip on almost every revolver- and I have large size glove hands. I don't have large! Hands, but if my reach differs, ocd kicks in and oh well.....)

I prefer wood stocks. No, I am not shooting a .44 magnum. (don't own 1) Do have 2 45Colt revolvers though. I took the factory stocks off my 25-15 (Altamont made) I replaced them with 80's S&W target stocks. They look better to me. Now the important thing. I shoot the gun better, and the recoil (perceived) has lessened. Wood is Good. Proper Fit, is IT! Bob

The rubber hogues that came on my 626-6 classic are honestly great, in MY hand. They are not the X frame grips, but do fully cover the backstrap. Yes, they are not pleasing to the eye, and I do like the look of wood so I've bought both a set of Ahrends and Kuracs to dress it up with. I like the feel of both of these grips and the looks are obviously immeasurably better. I don't have any 'trouble' shooting hot magnum loads with either of the wood grips, but I would be lieing if I said the gun wasn't super-soft shooting with the stock Hogues. Annnnd, I'm actually a slightly better shot with them on than either of the wood sets. Especially after a couple boxes worth into an extended session of full house magnums. Just my experience.

Can you post a picture or link to S&W website showing a picture of the rubber hogue grips that cover the backstrap but are not X frame grips?

Thanks,

On those hogues also, I find the gently grooved finger grips quite desireable too. Fill my hand fine and I can palm a basketball, barely. Just saying, all in all I think they're a great grip function wise. As good or better than any of the fancy wood ones I've bought. They just aren't lookers. But some people could probably care less about looks. If I was involved in any kind of competitive shooting (which I'm not) I would put these rubbers back on it promptly.

I wish I could tell you exactly what model # or whatever these grips are. It's also possible that S&W changed the kind of Hogues that came on the -6 classic? Maybe? I only say this because I THINK I have seen others that had hogues that did NOT cover the backstrap. Again, I'm only surmising. Either way, what makes these different than the X-frame hogues is that there isn't any additional 'padding' under where the grip covers the back of the butt. They just wrap fully around it. But this I find to be more than enough softening for the 44 mag. I can tell you this particular gun left the factory around June of 2015.

Harry,

Those are the current version of S&W's OEM rubber grips that come with most (all?) K, L, N frames. They are the ones that I replaced with the X Frame 500 Hogues.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that they are made by Hogue. Hogue grips are one piece and have a unique (proprietary ?) attachment system. A threaded metal stirrup is attached to the bottom grip locator pins. You slide the one piece grip up the grip frame. Once positioned, the screw is inserted in the bottom of the grips and screwed into the thread in the stirrup. (Bantams attach differently, but are also one piece).

Not meant as a criticism, but hopefully a clarification.

my bad, I thought they were. Doesn't change my opinion of them though. Nor anything I said in my experience shooting with them as opposed to ahrends or kuracs. Shall I send you a picture of those? And why not try being direct instead of passive aggressive or belittling?

Anyone who has these grips can answer this question? Also, there is a review of these grips at Brownells with the same comment.

I have never felt comfortable with rubber grips, even on an N frame in .44 Magnum. I like non-finger grooved Houge wood monogrips and also the Ahrends Smooth Tactical Revolver Grip (below). During extended range sessions, I wear a padded palm bicyclists glove like mountain bikers wear. The bicycle glove works far better than a rubber grip.
Ahrends Smooth Tactical grips shown on a 520 I now longer own (sobbing as I type)

I'm very happy with the new Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips. They even made my M69 manageable.

Default Packmayr Decelerators on Model 29

I got the Packmayr Decelerator for my Model 29. They fit fine but much thinner than the wood grips that came with the 29. They are all once piece (even though it looks like a seam in the pix) and cover the back strap nicely. See pixs.

I had the same question as others where if you grip screw too much, it will come out the other side. I called Pachmayr and they said not to screw it tight. Rather just screw it in until it if flush with the other side of the grip. Seemed to be fine and the grip was not loose at all.

I went to the range and shot some 44 Specials. Handled nice. I need to shoot more before I can say if I like the wood or these grips better. Plus I need to shoot some 44 Magnums as well.

Another vote for the Pachmayr Decelerators. They are very comfortable. If they are too thin for your taste, the Hogue Monogrips are quite good too.
Neither are very pretty, but they are great for taming recoil.

I like the pachmayer presentation rubber grips on my carry gun and shooters. I can sink my fingers into the rubber.

As you can see there is no perfect grip for everyone. Find one that fits your hand and go from there. I have found that if the grip fits rubber or wood will work just fine.

Default I have different grips for my j frames...

Hogue made a monogrip for the round grip and Pachmahr makes a grip for the square grip. They both work great.
