Default Any S&W Performance Center Schofield shooters?

Hello,

Back in 2003 or 2004 I owned two of the Performance Center Schofields, I sold them in 2006. Just last week I had the opportunity to buy a NIB 7" PC Schofield, with the cherry wood case for $1049, I had to buy it just because the price was so good. I am contemplating shooting it, as I did both of my previous Schofields. On the the two I had before, after firing them a few times, the backs of the cylinders had small dings (for lack of a better term) where the barrel latch had contacted the rear cylinder face. You would have two, one on each side of each charge hole (chamber). I was unsure why this was occurring, but assumed that either when ejecting the fired cases that the cylinder was being pushed into the latch, or upon firing the revolver the cylinder was jumping backwards into the latch. I assume the later. Is this normal? If so, is there anything that can be done to prevent it?

Do the Uberti Schofields do this? How about original S&W's?

Thanks,

Jared

I can't help and I have never shot one but I would really like to see a picture of yours. It sounds like a good looking piece.

I can't help either! I wanted one myself, but every example I found back then was either shop worn,or some had evidence of the inner frame bosses on the outside of the frame(if that make sense to you)Didn't seem right to me.
In more recent times, there has been some discussion here that the forcing cone is way too thin on these.

Of the examples I have had, 3 now, all have been NIB and in perfect condition. They were all fitted exceptionally nice, nearly perfect. I'm not sure what the inner frame boss is? I've read one poster that has complained about the forcing cone being too thin, I have never had one crack. His gun was a Uberti if I recall. My first two Schofields were only fired around 250 rounds each though, so that is not much use.

I have two PC Schofields and have shot both of them quite a bit. Neither exhibit the "dings" you speak of.
Coincidentally, I just got them out of the safe to shoot in a match tomorrow. I like 'em!

buckspen,

I wonder how yours avoided the marks? Both of the Schofields I had in the past had them. Also, I posted a thread on another forum, and a member there said his two PC Schofields have the marks. Even a member with a Uberti Schofield mentioned his had the marks as well.

I wouldn't call them dings.Perhaps more appropriately, external evidence of how the other side is machined.Pefectly fine blue, just not glass smooth when you examine it in the light.I had not noted this on any other Smith.
There certainly was a time when I had a craving for one of these, and a Colt SAA.That time passed for me.I'm basically a rimfire guy,but when it comes to a centerfire gun,it's really hard to beat a five inch Model 27.

buckspen,

My new Schofield has not been fire yet, so does not yet have the marks. But both of my previous PC Schofields had them after putting a box or two of ammo through them. I'll see if I can find a photo of the marks, I have seen photo's on the internet that show the marks.

i have had my S&w Schofield for around 3 years now ,i have perhaps fired 9or10 thousand rounds from it with only two minor issues ,one is occasionally it will jump unto half cock when fired, i think it happens mostly with nickel cases, I recon the frame firing pin is slightly long and the case on firing is rebounding it back slightly, any one else notice this . The other one was as the gun wore in i had a slight back and forth movement in the cylinder ,i fixed this by removing the cylinder star and putting a 3 thou. shim between star and the back of the cylinder this cured the cylinder float completely. I have not had any other issues and I have not noticed any dings on the rear of the cylinder . this pistol is one of the most accurate i own and i would never part with it .

Don't own one, though I thought about them. Did see a gentleman buy a Beretta scholfield last week for 1100.00 he said that Beretta quit making them, so I'd say that a PC model for what you paid is probably a good deal. Saw a five inch Uberti in LA a few months ago sure had a nice feel to it.

I know this thread is a few years old but I thought I would post what I have seen and found out. My S&W Schofield started showing the "dings" on the back of the cylinder and appeared to be getting worse. I sent the revolver back to S&W and they replaced the cylinder with no mention of any other work. When I received it back I ran 12 rounds through the pistol and noticed the dings returning. I sent it back to S&W again with photos and a history of what had happened. After 3 months they responded and claimed that the marks were normal wear and tear. They stated 2 performance center techs looked at it and all the specs were as expected. No one test fired the pistol.
I do not accept this since you can look at original pistols and find no evidence of these dings. Others have the same pistol and have no issues.
Now my issue is to either keep the pistol and shoot it knowing more damage will occur or sell it and pass the problem on to the next guy. I am not for the second option as I do not believe a problem should be passed to someone else.
It is a beautiful firearm and fun to shoot but I also take great pride in keeping my firearms in top condition. Every time I open the revolver to load it I see these dings staring me in the face. Like a neon sign flashing when you open it.

Yet again, Im raising this thread from the dead because I have the same issue with my Schofield. Seems to be a pattern here with these (dings on the back of the cylinder). Funny how S&W determined that this is "normal"
