Default Are all "N" frames the same size?

I was woundering are all N frame Smiths the same exact size? Could you take a barrel and cylinder from a 610 and put them on a 629 frame? Just kind of wondering out loud here. Thanks

Interesting question, I don't know the answer. Would think different calibers would not fit one to another. Be watching for the answer.

NO,
There are some dimensional changes that have occurred over the years.

YES,
They could be made to work.

It could be made to work, it just depends on your wallet. Or gunsmithing skill. I would think that you'd have to have obtained the parts pretty inexpensively and do the work yourself. By the time you paid a gunsmith for his labor you'd have spent less just getting a factory gun - assuming the factory MADE whatever gun you are trying to end up with.

There are several examples on this forum where an old beat up Model 28 Highway Patrolman (357 magnum) was given a new life as a different caliber, either as a 44 or 45.

I liken it to an engine swap. Sure, you can put a 454 in a Chevette. All it takes is money.

They're all the same size in terms of being N-Frames as opposed to K or L Frames, but there are small dimensional differences here & there, along with generational changes that have occurred along the way.

Swapping any given barrel from any N-Frame era into another of a different era may or may not work well.

While retaining the same overall size, N-Frames have evolved over the decades like the other Smith revolvers that have co-existed with them.

As I remember forum member Alanframe (?) has converted several assorted .357 Magnum N frames to different calibers, and has done an excellent job of documenting the process.
