66-4 w/3" bbl and round butt.
I was looking at one a few minutes ago. How rare is this 3" version and how many were made?

Estimates are somewhere between 5 and 8000, so they are fairly scarce and expensive in today's market. Was one for sale, and if so what was the asking price?

Just paid $700 for a dash 3 a couple months back. Chris aka snw19__357 knows alot about these 66's and 19's, PM him. Or he'll probably show up soon.

Charlie,
Hard to find Smith.
Everything mod 66 is HOT in my part of the world.
Ladder is spot on with the price.

After building a nice collection of S&W and Colt revolvers back in the 1980s, I sold them all due to a shift in interest to trapshooting. An eye problem that developed in 2005 has rendered me less competitive in trap so I spent 2009 through 2011 accumulating a modest assortment of of pre-lock, pre-MIM S&Ws. Although I bought 686s, 617s and 629s, I placed most of my buying emphasis on 66s. Simply put, they don't make them any longer and like-new ones are becoming scarcer every month. I would pay more for a nice 66 than an equally nice 686 right now.
Unless, of course, a 686 National Match would come along...

This one is at a police auction near here. The auction is for FFL C&R only so I don't get to bid on anything. There may actually be a pic of this gun on their auction site. I haven't looked yet but if you Google Martin & Martin in Mississippi you might find it. Most of the stuff this time is rusty junk with a few nice pieces here and there. I went over there to look a couple of hours ago and as far as Smith's go there were several 66's, including the 3" 66-4, a 67 with no grips, a finish impaired 4" 28-2 dressed in pachs, a rusty 4" pre-war K frame in .38 S&W, and what I guess is a short barrel M&P assault something or other in .22 cal. The auction is tomorrow. I probably won't go to this one. They have had some super rare stuff at this auction, but not this time.

3" 66-4s number in the mere hundreds. Over 5000 3" 66s were produced, 4200+ were 66-2s made for Ashland, the rest were -3s and -4s. Maybe -5s too, but those -5s could all be 3 1/4" barrels...someone else may know for sure.
