625 problem-need help

I bought a 625-6 Mountain Gun customized by well known Gary Reeder who cut it to 3 inches,did a beautiful job on the sight and crown and an action job and the other cosmetics that he does.I bought it on on auction, got it in, it looks great,but when you pull the trigger very slowly you feel something different than it pre-timing. if you let go at that point, the pistol appears to be cocked in the single action mode but its not. If you pull back on the hammer the trigger will return and the hammer will also if you let go.The gun will function otherwise 100 per cent. Is everything all right or am i just being overly picky??Maybe something went wrong when they did the action job. Has anyone had this experience?.You have to pull very very slowly like bullseye shooter. Look at the pictures and you will see how much further the hammer is at full cock as compared to when the gun just hangs when
you pull the trigger slowly and it catches. Those are the last three pictures.Forum members who understand double action workings(I dont,I can take it apart and put it together,period!!please reply

it is my understanding that the 625-6 and the 629-5 were the same engineering change implemented in 1997, but the Reeder gun looks so different that he either used his own parts or some were altered materially especially the hammer
maybe this is part of the problem.When I took out the hammer block, i was unable to get it to hang up .maybe my imagination? i will get with LeBur who was doing great action jobs before i ever took a sideplate off!! He is in my county and i trust his opinion.

By manipulating the hammer & trigger at the same time you can make any Smith do that. However with just the trigger you.....may have a problem. Could time for a new set of internal springs.

It's not right, but I can't say exactly what it is. It might be in the rebound block or pehaps the rebound spring has been cut and it's sometimes snags. (The rebound is the block that pushes the trigger back) How is the push off (cock gun and gently press hammer forward) if it slips then you trigger needs to be looked at.

Definitely not right. Call Reeder and have him look at the video. He can probably tell you right off what is going on.

I put pics up of the inside of the 625-6 which is hanging up that had the custom action job and the inside of a PC 629-5 which
I believe are the exact same engineering change that included "change internal lockwork" was Supica's words. But the 625 looks like someone changed or modified parts.
Or maybe thats what a MIM hammer is supposed to look like?
I feel like a dumbass,After taking apart a few smiths, I realize the the MIM hammer is what caught my eye in the Reeder gun as I had never seen one before and the PC guns even
ones with the lock do not have the MIM hammer,so I am back to square one not knowing what the prob is.

I agree that talking to the 'smith that did the work is the best course of action, but two things stick out to me from your photo of the lockwork:

1. It's pretty filthy inside
2. The rebound slide appears to be wearing a groove into the frame, right above and to the rear of the pin

You can try that. But I've got a Reeded Ruger that went back to him twice with various minor issues, and he was never able (or willing) to address all of them to my satisfaction.

It sounds like a minor issue with the rebound slide not interacting correctly with the hammer. Knowing what I know, I'd just have it checked out locally if you have a reliable gunsmith in the area. - JM.

That's a shame, Josh. With what he charges for his creations, he should stand behind his work. Word will eventually get around. Karma's a bitch. Time to see LeBur............

I had the same problem with a NEW Lew Horton 24 several years ago. I dropped it off with Ron Power to get it fixed. His bill did not amount to much as I recall. I am not sure after probably over 15 years what he told me he worked on to repair it. He did not act like it was a big deal at all.

If you have a local gunsmith you would trust to work on a S&W revolver. I would have him take a look and determine what the problem is as my first step. It might just be dirty.

I agree BobR1, especially in light of what Josh's experience was in dealing with Gary Reeder.......

New Pic shows it lockeded up where the parts stuck instead of falling away as the trigger is pulled and the hammer should have fallen instead of getting stuck
