Default 686 Talo 5"

So I went to the gun shop today to put some money down on a 686ssr. And of course the SSR was gone. They did have a 686+ 5" Talo edition. Does anyone have one of these? I could care less about the Talo name but I really like the unfluted cylinder and 5" barrel.

Can anyone tell me if they are round or square butt? I would like to change out the grips.

Do they make a holster for 5" .357's

Anyone have any range reports on these especially the 5"? I have been checking google but not having much luck.

I have a CS-1 4" 686 and a 686 with a six inch barrel. I consider both of them to be about as good as it gets.

I googled your request and here is what I got:

Google

I believe you'll be very happy. My favorite frame size for the .357 is the "L" frame.

I've got a 5 in Talo 686 and it is a nail driver. As long as I do my part, it has no problem doing less than a 2" group at 25 yards. The fit and finish are top notch and it locks up tighter than any other revolver I own.

@jhendrix I don't care much for the grips so I would want to replace them. Do you know if they are a square or round butt?

The grips look good and are finished very well but should be changed for better handling and accuracy. Thave given me quite a bit of trouble. I would like to replace them but am unsure what would be a good replacement.

@southernpride thanks.

I am looking into Hogue grips for shooting. The stock grips do look nice but they don't feel right for shoot ability.

I first saw one in Fl last January. When I returned home my LGS was only able to get the 5" and 7" (or is it 7 1/2") while I wanted the 3" version. Finally got the gun in late May of 2011. I have only shot it out to 50', but at that distance is is VERY accurate. I agree the grips are beautiful but not the best for range work.

I've been shootin' the 'ell outta mine. Had it for a year now. The 5'' barrel and unfluted cylinder drew my attention. I too was not impressed at first with the grips, but they have grown on me as has the accuracy. Don't know it it was me, the grips or the barrel needing to be smoothed out, but accuracy sucked when I first started to shoot it, but now it is one of my most accurate 686's. My youngest son prefers it's double action to any of my other smiths....even the older ones.

I say go for it if you like it - without to much trouble you can get a holster for anything - some of my favorite guns have been impulse purchases - so spend it if you got it is my motto

I bought the 7" at the end of December and it's been back, at S&W for warranty work, more than I have had it in my safe.

It had to be completely refinished. The gun was spitting because the forcing cone was chamfered, but the gun became a flame thrower after they recut the forcing cone to .009+.

I figured since it was back this time I might as well get the trigger job done. I hope to have it back in the next week or so.........never needing to go back again.

Just bought my 5" Talo a week ago. It's a beast! Had at the range and it shot like a dream. My first wheel gun and couldn't be happier. The original grips are nice, but wanted something a little bit more range friendly while keeping them in excellent condition. So I bought the Hogue grips and can't wait to try them out.

I bought one of these last year and I shoot it all the time. It is probably my favorite revolver.Something about the 5" just works great for how I shoot.

In an unexplainable act of madness,I traded it on a 627 Pro right after I bought it.
A week later, the Talo was still at the gunstore and I bought it back.

I plan on shooting it until I wear it out.I took off the grips and put Hogues on mine.

Default S&W 686p Talo 5"

As for as leather holsters to fit the 5" S&W 686 plus (7 shot), the Bianchi 5bhl is a near perfect fit in a hard to find size. Model number is 18492. Expect one half inch play with the gun in the holster, but avoids the tight thumbstrap issues as mentioned in other reviews. Cost $65, Try OpticsPlanet amongst others.

My first time out with my 357 magnum I used the Talo laminated wood grip. Hard on the hand with full loads.
I have already received and installed replacement grips.
I went with the Hogue Monogrip conversion (K/L frame size).
Immediate improvement and only $21!
Absorbs recoil nicely, improves grip, all from a black rubber compound grip found on other similar S&W's.
Yes, this is a round butt frame.
Weight for this solid stainless steel beauty is about 39.6 ounces.

The balance of the 5" barrel is perfect, this was my way to resolve the ongoing question of 4" vs. 6" barrel.
Oh, did I mention the 7 round chamber?
Accurate, good trigger and a handsome firearm.
Cost new is about $750.

Highly recommended.

When Goldilocks visited her LGS and picked up a 3" 686, she said "it's too short". Then she tried the 7" and said " it's too long and heavy". When she tried the 5" she exclaimed "it's just right!"

Lobo Gun Leather is an active member here and will build you a 5" holster to your specs. So will El Paso Saddlery and several other good leather workers. Why put your expensive new revolver in a cheap off the shelf holster that doesn't fit well when for a little more cash you can have a holster to be proud of?

I just tried to get my LGS to order one of these for me last week, and they couldn't get any from their distributors. So someone must like them (other than us)! I've got the 3" and love it.

I really like their looks and the 5" barrel really appeals to me. Unfortunately my eyes have a very hard time picking up on the red ramp front sight that Smith is so pleased with. I know that the front sight is pinned and can be replaced but in searching the net for months I have never found anyone who has replacement sights (patridge style) in stock. A shame that such a simple and inexpensive thing can kill a purchase like that. Why even bother having a pinned front sight if parts are never going to be available.

Did you lose any money selling and re-buying your 686?
