Default Question About S&W Revolver Key

I picked up my first S&W revolver with a action lock... a model 442. I got it used at a very reasonable price but there is a potential problem. The revolver came with only one key for the action lock as the origional owner lost one of them. I would like to pick up two more keys so I both my wife and I can each carry one and one to keep in the safe "just in case".

Are all S&W action lock keys same?
Can I just buy one from someone or from S&W and expect it to work?

Thank you.

All of the Keys are the same, there are multiple places to obtain them, should be no more than 2 or 3 bucks each.

Thank you for a quick reply.
I thought they were all same but wanted to make sure they were not "keyed".

I'm going to post on the WTB section to see if anybody has some they want to sell.

They are all the same. (I have multiple S&Ws with locks). I obtained spares by calling S&W and they sent them out for free. I keep one on each of my keychains.

Lots of us remove the useless locks and therefore have spare keys for the taking. I refuse to have a lock in one of my guns.

Just a note of caution. I was detained when entering the local courthouse in Florida because there was a S&W revolver key on my keychain. They scan and check everything when you come in, and one of the officers thought it was a handcuff key. Next thing I knew there were three officers next to me and was told that I had committed a felony by bringing a handcuff key into the building. Finally was released when a supervisor examined it and determined that it in fact it was a gun lock key. Wouldn't have thought much of it, but these people carry and use handcuffs!
Just be careful if you put it on your keychain. I no longer have one on my keychain, or a lock on the gun.

Why put the gun key on a key ring? If the gun is locked just when you need it, is a director going to step in to "cut" the action until you take out your key to unlock your gun and then call "action" when you get the gun ready to use? Just carry the gun in the unlocked state and leave the key at home. Use a lock box if you need to store the gun in a car.

The fact that one key fits all S&W gun locks is proof that the locks are useless.

I have to leave the gun in my car when I go to court. That is the only time it is locked. I have since ground off the stud on the flag, and now use a trigger lock when it is left in the car. That court house is in a fairly high crime area.

Yep, I didn't get any keys with my 642 so I e-mailed S&W and they sent them out and I had em' in just a couple days. Excellent Customer Service.

The key can come in handy if you have the dreaded IL self activation.

Owning a handcuff key is NOT a felony. Bringing one into that courthouse is a felony, however.

Why would that be a felony. I've been carrying one for quite some time and have never even given it a thought. Is it posted anywhere, or did someone just make that claim? Sounds like a good topic for some research.

Having just spent about 15 minutes of reading, it's illegal to use one to free yourself or someone else in police custody, but I couldn't find anything anywhere that claims that they're illegal to own or carry on your person.

If you're still looking for a couple of keys PM me with your address and I'll mail them to you. I have several, don't use them but never throw anything away.

I tried to call S&W customer service for past 2 days with no success... just kept ring for about 30 minutes each time with no one answering the phone. I also left a e-mail message but no reply yet. I took up an offer from a member here who has some spare.

A S&W internal lock key, in my opinion, is the second most useless thing in the world.

I carry one on my key chain. FOund it in the parking lot at the jail and thought "Hey, this would be neat to have on my key ring next to my duck band" so I put in on. Says Smith & Wesson on it . One day I'll be somewhere in an emergency and someone will be screaming for a handcuff key to unlock a hostage chained to a bomb. Or I'll be in Mistress Samantha's home for wayward boys and the po po decides to raid-er check the occupational liscenses. Or the most important reason-because I can. They can have my handcuss key when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.
It's the same reason I always carry duct tape in the Suburban.

Actually maybe the third if you count the lock itself...

Just wondering, is there any record of anyone using the lock? I suspect this would rank right up there with sightings of Bigfoot.
