Default NYPD revolver questions

NYPD guys, what holsters were used with the 4 inch and 3 inch 64's?

When/if you used the 640 as a BUG, where did you carry it? Ankle holster? If so, which model? Vest holster? Uncle Mikes? IWB?

What combination (Duty/BUG) of revolver was most popular? 64 and 60? Rugers?

Thanks for your time! And your service! Regards 18DAI

Check with board vendor Bell Charter Oak Holsters/oldflatfoot. Lefty will know, for sure.

The most common gun was the 4" Model 10, in a Jay-Pee open top leather holster, mostly a swivel. Highway patrol and ESU wore the flap top. The BUG was most likely a model 2" 36 in a IWB. The 64's would have been carried in similar rigs.

I agree. Motorcycle, Emergency Service, Marine Unit and Mounted all used the flap holsters with few exceptions. The M&P and Model 10's were probably the most popular 4 inch service revolvers, but Police Positive's, Official Police and other similar size Colt models were also used. The Audley type duty holster was made by many vendors, but Jay-Pee probably made the majority of them. BUG's were assorted, 2 inch .38 S&W/.38 Spl. made by S&W and and Colt were the most common but I saw many others being used/carried, including small autos of various pedigrees. To answer the more recent era questions (i.e. 640, 64, Rugers) try to reach member BigBoku, I was long gone by the time those guns came into the picture.

Cheers;
Lefty

What holsters were used with the 4 inch and 3 inch 64's?

Jay-Pee Holsters were the most previlent, The two types of "bucket Holsters" I have for a 4" K frame are both Jay-Pee one is a swivel type the other is non-swivel.

When/if you used the 640 as a BUG, where did you carry it? Ankle holster? If so, which model? Vest holster? Uncle Mikes? IWB?

When I am working I always have a "NY Reload" which is carried support side appendage. The only time I ever wear an ankle holster (Alessi) is when I am wearing a suit and not working.

What combination (Duty/BUG) of revolver was most popular? 64 and 60? Rugers?

S&W was the majority of the revolvers in the department and depending on the era it varied S&W model 10 usually was backed up with a S&W Model 36, S&W NY-1 Model 64 DAO was most commonly backed up with a 640, Quite a few of officers that had the NY-1 Model 60 which was removed from service took advantage of the exchange and ended up with the 2" NY-1 Model 64.

The "Ruger Guys" well some carried the SPNY (DAO SP101) out of product loyalty and some carried S&W J frames because they were alot easier to conceal and had the same ammunition capacity as the larger Ruger.

Keep in mind I only covered the "MOST COMMON COMBINATIONS".

BigBoku - what does "support side appendage" mean? I am not familiar with that description/term as a mode of carry. Thank you.

My pleasure 18DAI PM me if you need anything............
Which direction do you carry it? Do you carry it so that you can grab it with your support hand, or do you carry it so that you can grab it with your firing hand? Thank you.

The best holster I have found for my method of BUG carry is the GUN GONE REVOLVER made by Bell Charter Oak, it is perfectly balanced combination of hidden yet accessible when worn underneath my duty belt.

It is positioned for support hand draw, My philosophy and training regiment on this matter is that regardless of right or left they are both firing hands and when I teach this I use the example of being in a fist fight and only striking with one hand.

I'm in the DA's Office in Rockingham County currently BigBoku. Its not the end of the world, but you can see it from here.

I was with Guilford County - 18th District - for nine years prior to that. I've worked with the Charlotte Metro and Mecklenberg DA Squad on a few occasions. They are some good ole boys. I wouldn't want them chasing me.

My father was a Nassau County Police officer for 27 years. Most of it in the Seventh Precinct in Seaford. Retired to NC in 1979. Most of my great uncles were NYPD back in the 30's, 40's and 50's. They had some stories to tell. I've still got my fathers Jay Pee duty gear that he used with his Colt Trooper.

Thanks again! Stay safe! Best regards, 18DAI
