Default Mdl. 17 range day

Had most of a box of Fed 350 round box left (200+-?) so ran them through my 17. Unfortunately had a miss fire just about every cylinder, rotated case 90 degrees and all but 2 fired. 10 yards all double action rapid fire. Right hand getting better after surgery. Getting eyes fixed is next.07003217-2A26-46E8-93F5-AC731B189EBC.jpg

I would have a gunsmith look at your revolver. Sounds like maybe the firing pin is broken or it needs a good cleaning? Something is very wrong. Mine has never had a misfire in thousands of rounds.

I’ll echo Model19man by saying get a gunsmith to take a look at your 17. I’ve had countless rounds thru my 17-3 and can’t ever recall anything like you describe happening.

Before I got excited about my firing pin ,I’d look at the indentation the pin put on the cartridge. It sounds like bulk Feds were used . My favorite m17&18 but get failure to fire and the shells are hit same hardness as the other rounds , and a simple rotation and the round fires . Tells me poor primer mix didn’t flow around the entire base . I’ve haven’t had 1 in 6 but have had 1 in 12 to 18 with Remington gold bullet bulk . I think trying to get caught up with demand has caused quality to disappear a little imo .

From the looks of that target I think your eyes are pretty good. 😎
Misfires are common with some bulk ammo. I would try several different manufacturers. Maybe some better quality ammo.
Of course a good thorough cleaning never hurt anything either.

Have checked the firing pin, no issues and cleaned both sides of the floating pin it in the frame. Also checked to see if it may have been a “ bad cylinder bore” but its not. Sad to say the federal bulk pack rounds are not reliable. Same issues in all my other 22s rifle or pistol. Revolver is a 17 no dash and is a very good one mfg well before there were “ issues” at S&W. H ave determined that CCI Standard Velocity 22s are the go to 22s for plinking. I will not buy any Win. ,Rem. ,Aguila or Fed. any more, not worth the problems. Thank you covid….

Number one culprit with misfires in a K frame is a loose strain screw, make sure it is fully tight.
After that speaking of 22 is ammo quality, or lack there of

The ammo given the least attention in production effort and quality control is bulk pack, across the board.
I do find CCI a good bit better even in bulk versions
All the other American companies run borderline ( federal)
To absolute junk ( Remington / Winchester)
The only time I shoot Remington, Winchester or federal is if I get it for free.
Sadly Mexican aguila is much better than most American made ammo, almost on par with CCI

Greyman50,

Don't get wrapped around the axel with misfires. It happens with most ammo especially bulk ammo's. The fact that you were able to rotate the cartridge and they fired (except 2), tells me the priming compound did not get spread evenly in the case during the priming procedure. Clean the revolver, try again and if the same results then chalk it up to poor ammo. Over my lifetime I have probably had the best luck with CCI, Eley, Lapua and SK. I shot 100 rounds of Federal AutoMatch today out of my Browning Buckmark and had one failure to fire. Was that the pistols fault? I think not, just a factory dud. Fired 50 rounds of 1988 manufactured Polish .22 Short today from my Walther OSP and had a FTF, rechambered the round and it went bang. Stuff happens!

No issues with strain screw, in 40 some years of S&Ws that is or can be a huge problem when someone “ adjusts” screw. No big deal about the bulk pack 22s just wont buy any more. From experience I fully understand that the primer is not enough and as I posted ,thanks covid. lol
BTW, revolver gets cleaned very well after Each shoot.
Thanks for the replys.

I used to buy a case at a time of Fed. bulk 525 rd.from Walmart back when they first started making that 36gr. bullet . It was cheap , accurate, and all my k22’s liked them , I ran out during the election buyout. Needless to say I’ve always heard bulk ammo is the grade “B” of .22’s . I use sparringly my target/ hunting ammo and still buy the bulk to shoot , plink, practice with after firing some of my good stuff. FTF’s are another form of practice “unwanted for sure” but can happen . Just saying don’t give up on it yet as it’s still usable. Also maybe a mass flood of angry shooters writing letter’s might make a change . Keep on a shooting!!

Thought I would mention a good .22 ammo that is a big step up from the bulk stuff is Wolf "Match Extra". Made under contract in England by Eley, it is real match grade ammo at well under $10 a box of 50. Very consistent, you seldom get the "fliers" that always seem to ruin your groups like the bulk stuff does. Not needed for general shooting / plinking (CCI SV & Mini Mags), but good if you want to see what that rifle or pistol will really do....
