A little test; what is unusual about this model 64-5?
I found this at the War Memorial auditorium show on Sunday.
If I am buying a model 64 you know it was a slow weekend for Smiths  .
But this is no ordinary vanilla model 64. It is a 64-5 from 1997.
That is all I will say.
Get out your Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd. editions and
get to work.
( If you don't have a S.C.of S&W shame on you, go to Amazon and buy one right away).
I will reveal the details tomorrow as I can.
The marking is also kind of unusual. MB 64. What do you think that stands for?

A quick guess - MIM parts? I used to have a 64-5 and it had forged parts.

I purchased a few of the surplus 64's a few years back that had the grooved frames. They were both DAO. Very nice guns. I ended up selling them to Stephen A. Camp.
As far as the "MB" goes, I would guess a casino or armored car company.

Allen,
The one I snagged (thanks to you & Brad) appears unfired.
With some searching on the internet, I seemed to find a dealer that had 60 plus, then later acquired 20 more (it was late at night and I'm going by memory here). So, if 80 was anywhere near the total run, then my MB 71 could have been high enough that it wasn't ever issued.... Just waiting in the rack as a replacement.
We can say with certainty, that the frames were not sequential, since my serial number begins with "CCC". In addition, you mentioned that there was a name on the box -- probably the guard it was issued to. My box has no name.
I like pieces that have a bit of provenance to them... even if unsubstantiated.
