I'm in the market for a 460 to use for deer hunting in Ohio. I have looked on line for info on this weapon and have called Smith with questions. They were very helpful and answered all of my questions. I'm interested in the 12" and 10.5" models from Smith's Performance Shop? I was hoping for feed back from members of this site on performance and general overview of this weapon. I'm not sure of which model/barrel length to go with. They both have interesting features that I like,

I just use my standard barrel length and get you out to 200 with Hornaday ammo.
Just remember to wear hearing protection.

Which barrel length do you have? Which factory Hornaday ammo do you use? Do you have a scope mounted on your 460?

My Dad and I love ours. He shoots the 12 and I prefer the 10. Leupold 3x9 handgun scopes. With Factory 225gn Hornady ammo, I could shoot under 2moa at 100yds off sandbags. Have not got the chance to hunt with them yet.

I love the round. I have it set up for Moose hunting. Flys out of a 20" T/C Barrel at over 2800 fps with more than a ton of energy at 50 yards.

Another member mentioned hearing protection. +1 on that!
I was firing and the stock barely lifted my right side ear muff. I got stung good! I changed to flush ear protection that very week and I am going to use some sort of "hunters ear" for hunting.

I own a 500 Smith that will knock your ears off. I use ear plugs and muffs when I'm at the range. I'll use a hunters ear device when I'm in the field with the 460.

So the articles I have read online about instant hearing loss with both the .460 and .500 have some truth to them. Sure that statement differs on multi situations.

Our indoor range banned these rounds and others. I double up when shooting .357 & .44 mags.

You have to agree that the .500 & .460 are truly Awesome Firepower. My hmm hmm grow just a little everytime I put a .460round in the chamber!

The .460 is an excellent deer round and the X-Frames deliver it very accurately. I have the PC 10.5'' and use it with a sling and shooting stick. The caliber really shines when handloaded as factory ammo selection is limited and the true hunting rounds are expensive.

Can someone please share some info on some loads??? I have one of the 12"PC's and if I try to shoot the 200gr bullets to the factory 2300-2600fps..the shells seize into the chambers.. (Yes I cleaned and even polished the chambers...and no I never shoot 45's or 454's in my gun)

Are heavy bullets (300gr) the answer...guess I don't mind a little kentucky hold-over if the load is real accurate

It is accurate... 50 yard groups are just one fat hole and the 100 yard groups always seem to go inside of 3 inches... but I wanted speed with this purchase so that I could extend my range out to 250yds++..but it seem in order to be able to eject my shells I have to slow them down and this really hurts the trajectory.

The 10.5" model is on the way. Can't wait to shoot this fine weapon. RGJZ06

I too live in Ohio and after being transplanted from WV it's hard to convert to straight walled cartridge hunting vs my old trusty rifle..
That was the revolver I had planned using.. however I ended up buying a SW Stealth Hunter in 44


Granted I still wouldnt mind picking up that 460... but I'm just a model 629 fanatic... I used factory Speer 270 grain Gold Dot Soft Points and love them!

You really cant go wrong with any performance center gun in my opinion all of mine shoot phenominal!

As far as scopes go, the Leupold VX3 2.5-8x32mm or Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6x32mm are the scope I use

I've hunted in Ohio with my Lew Horton 6.5 in barrel 460 since 2005. Deadly accurate to 100 yds with 200 gr Hornady. It,s hard to get a 100+ yd shot in Ohio woodlands. 2x leupold scope with Warner mounts handles the recoil. Eleven whitetail-one shot -one kill. I would certainly recommend this pistol to any handgunner. Wear ear protection

I did look into buying one and right now I have one on my wish list at Bud's Gun Shop. I called S&W about this gun and they said they haven't made very many.

I received the 10.5 on Tuesday. I'd like to take it to the range this weekend to put a few rounds through it.

Jpro, you are correct on all accounts. A 100 yard shot where I hunt would be rare.

The 460 is in house now and I ordered a Leupold VX-3, 2.5 to 8 with a 32mm objective, 1" tube. The 10.5 inch performance center model looks like it has a weaver size base.

Now I need to purchase a good set of rings. If anyone has some experience with this base, ring combination, please let me know what has worked for you.

I have Warner rings on my 460. They handle the recoil and after the original zeroing (zeroing?), I have not touched them since (2005)

The Performance Model I have has a weaver style rail on the top for scope mounting. The Warner rings I looked at on line are made for their bases.

Did you purchase the Warner base and rings or just the rings?

I also love my .460 !
I guess mine would be closer to a 8 3/8" barrel.
Authough i'm not a hunter and mine dosn't have a scope, its still a blast to shoot and very accurate.
A bit louder report than the .500 as well as has a longer target range.

what kind of shooting stick do you use?..i;ve fell in love with my bog pods..

I occasionally shoot out to 200 meters with my 460 and shooting off a rock solid benchrest and I have shot as little as 4 MOA but it takes a SERIOUSLY steady hold and exceptional muscle and breathing control to shoot consistiantly at 200 meters. I more prefer shooting at 100 yds which is a more realistic distance because I like to shoot at 9" paper plates. Keeping all my shots on a 9" plate at 200 meters gets tough, 100 yds is more doable. My most accurate load is the 200 gr FTX and 50 gr of H110. I'm at about 2180 fps from my 12" XVR. I had an issue with my past scope setup (pictured) as I was running out of scope elevation trying to dope out to 200 meters. My Burris 3-12x is 1/8 moa. I ended up buying the new Burris XTR sig adjustable rings and by adding 10 moa of elevation i'm now able to dope from a 100 yd zero out to 200 meters easily with elevation adj to spare.

I use the Primos Trigger Stick if I'm close to the road. It is long and a little on the heavy side.

Most of the time it's a lightweight monopod from WalMart. It's light, only 21" long and fits in my daypack. I added the camo tape to the top section:



I use a 44 Mag Stealth Hunter with iron sights and a monopod for antelope but usually end up harvesting the animal off hand.

Those EYES and trigger FINGER work pretty good too WYO

The pictures -- especially the top most picture is simply awe-inspiring. The picture of the heart is a heart-stopper.

I am really not a hunter, prairie dogs are all I do and that's a once-a-year trip. But without going too deeply in to it...

When you take an animal of -THAT- size, what in the heck happens next?! I can't see moving that beast even if you had a football team to do the work. Drag it with vehicles? Use earth-moving heavy equipment to lift it?

Did the animal get weighed? How? Truck scale at a weight station?!

Seriously, that is just one breath-taking creature. I'm running out of words.
