Default Model 22-4 Front sight

So...I have decided that in order to make the TR 22-4 a more easily shot revolver, I need to make some adjustments to the the front sight. I have a hard time with quick acquisition with the rounded, blackened blade. I contacted S&W, asking what the sight height was, what would be a good replacement sight along the lines of a fiber optic type, and what type of ammo was used to test fire and regulate the sights. The response was that I would need to change the BARREL to change the sight. I don't think so, Tim. It is held on with a roll pin, which I'm almost 100% sure I can retain/reuse.

Any knowledgable parties have any suggestions for a Hi Viz model number or a gold bead front sight (manufacturer, etc.) that is the proper part for the 22-4? I guess I can try and modify the existing front sight to be more user friendly, but would like to keep it stock in case I feel the need to go back to it for some reason.

Anybody have any suggestions or experience in doing something like this? Thanks for the help.

Call them again. You may get a different person who knows what he's talking about. It may be that the best you will do is to get another front sight and a few roll pins, but that's better than nothing.

I guess I can give it another try. After that, I guess I'll see about contacting Brownells and see what they recommend as far as a suitable sight. Might have to go with a blank that fits and make my own....

I just replaced the front sight blade on my 14-8 with a gold bead from SDM. Much to nice of a gun to stick one of those plastic thingamajiggies on in my opinion.

I would order another front sight for your gun, and then carefully notch it , right where it fits down into the rear sight, kind of making it like a patridge front . You could paint it wht or orange. I think King's had a sight similar or Ive seen them on some 32 cal older S/W's.Good luck Bob

S&W changed some of the sights on the early TR 22-4s as they shot low to POA. I have one of the early ones (TRR014X)that shot low but I was not the original buyer and I decided to file mine down myself due to shipping cost. They are definitely made to be changed if necessary. I find that a little Testor's model paint in orange helps me see it.

I ran into the same problem with my 22-4. I filed the front sight to about a 45 degree flat, kind of ramp. Then touched it up with some cold blue. It helped make it a little more usable for me. I figure if I need to put it back to factory condition a new blade will be easy enough to get.

I did it the easy way. I painted the front sight with some Testors model paint. First two coats of a white primer and then two coats of a blaze orange. I can really see it now! Great thing is you don't have to replace it, or file it, and the paint is easily and safely removed with mineral spirits that will not hurt the finish. Try this first.

Wink FYI

I had both my 22-4s front sights changed by the factory. They openly acknowledged the original sight was too high. They paid shipping both ways and changed the sights for no charge.

My only complaint is the factory sight is too thick for distance shooting, but I notice most shooters here prefer 5 to 10 yds. anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the model paint, some variant of red Orange a while back at a local match, and by the fifth stage it was gone. Maybe I should have used a primer as suggested, but I didn't see anything like that when I got the paint. I'm not sure how early a model mine is, the actual numbering starts with TR22xx, but after the email I got from S&W saying I needed to change the barrel, I don't know if I want to send it to them just yet....I will have to check out SUM's website and maybe contact them. Or maybe just get crazy with the dremel......just kidding.
