rust spot on just purchased 686
looking for a good way to get rid of a few small rust spots in the barrel of my 686. they are visible when you open the cylinder. i don't want to use any abrasive tools for clear reasons, but i do want to get rid of them. would hoppes 9 do the trick along with a nylon brush? i'm new to all of this, so any help is greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Your 686 is stainless, which is a lot more forgiving than blued steel. Use whatever you have handy to remove the rust, probably something more substantial than a nylon brush. Try a brass brush or even a stainless one, or bronze/stainless wool (don't use regular steel wool that may leave steel particles behind that will begin rusting again). A ScotchBrite pad is another option.

That is what I was thinking..... in any event-I would stop by your local ship chandlery (or grocery store) and get some bronze wool (or a bronze chore girl) to use-works great on stainless.

If the spots are true rust .. they can't be major corrosion on a SS. gun. 3 products are great; ``````````` Simichrome, Flitz, and Wenol( German mfg.)
all take oxidation and corrosion off .. gently

I would give the barrel a conventional cleaning and re-inspect before concluding it is rust.
Rust in a new gun would mean back to the factory for me.

Good point. I misread the original post, thinking he had rust on the barrel, not in the barrel.
Like others have said, it may not be rust if it's in the barrel. Could be copper, old oil, etc.
