Default Forgive me, for I have strayed

But, never again.
A couple weeks ago I picked up a Ruger GP100 Wiley Clapp edition. I liked the way it looked and felt. I liked the 3" barrel, fiber optic novak sight, & the finish. It looked cool.
When I shot the GP it had a awful double action trigger pull.
Per my gage, a very rough 16+ lb. pull with a noticeable catch in the first 1/3 of the pull.

I've Never had a S&W out of the box, Anywhere near this.

But, I figured no big deal, I've got a dozen or so S&W revolvers. Which with a little polish on the bearing surfaces and some Wolfe springs and you have a Very Smooth double action trigger, good enough for local shooting matches.

I take the GP apart, nothing in there that looks like my beloved Smiths.
I check for Ruger replacement parts, "Factory Install Only" on alot of them.
With Smith , even if you would happen to screw up a part. A quick call to Smith or Brownells and the part is on its way.

So, I figure I can sell the GP and take the beating. Find a good Ruger gunsmith and wait 6 months to a year to get a trigger job. Or try and figure out what makes this thing tick and hope I don't bugger up any parts.

I know ,, should have checked this all out Before I jumped in with both feet. Should have known better. Should not have strayed just because of a pretty face.

Know any good Ruger gunsmith's ?

As long as you repent for this sin, you will be ok. Say 10 Hail Marys and 5 Our Fathers.

I've got a few Rugers and love them, especially my GP100. But trigger pulls are kinda hit or miss with them, you can get a great one or a ****** one. I've been lucky so far.

The "Factory Install Only" rule is a pain in the behind. I agree with that. I wanted to swap the hammers on three of my Rugers to DAO spurless hammers (which is so simple a rather slow 5 year old can do it) and they won't send me the part even though I explained that I live thousands of miles away from their plant and I've got no legal way to ship my revolvers.

I ended up finding the hammers through Numrich, they've got a decent selection of Ruger parts (including some "Factory Install Only" ones).

I have a few Rugers as well. Google should provide all the answers you need for a DIY trigger job.

Here is one, I found several others very quickly.
GP-100: Five Minute Trigger Job! (UPDATED 01/17/10)

Just remember you could have saved yourself some trouble if you had simply bought a S&W

Ruger internals are similar, but different, compared to S&Ws. Rugers often come with fairly rough triggers, but with a little effort, you can smooth the mating surfaces and get a very nice trigger. I have done it to several GP-100s and an SP-101. When you get done, you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between a good Ruger and a good S&W.

Tom C is absolutly correct. With a little work the gp100 can be transformed into a suprisingly good gun with a great double action pull. I bought one when they first came out and was disappointed with the trigger. I sold the gun to my tool and die/mold maker friend and a couple days later he showed back up with a big grin on his face. I have fired a couple more he has worked and they were more than acceptable also.

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Ruger GP100. Actually I'm kind of surprised. I have owned several GP100 revolvers, and all had decent trigger pulls on them, but my last, bought in 2011, came with a very good trigger pull out of the box. I then ordered a action tune up spring kit from Brownells and it made an already nice trigger very nice. I actually like the Ruger GP100 trigger groups, really easy to remove from the revolver and spring changes etc. are very easy. Just curious, was your revolver new when you bought it? If so, and the trigger is really that bad, I would call Ruger and see if you could send it back for inspection and repair. If not, a set of lighter trigger and hammer springs would certainly be worth a try. Hope it all works out for you.

We've all been there at one point. Usually in our young and
easily impressionable age. Go back to the Force.
Leave the Dark Side.
